      • CORPORATE GOVERNANCE IN JAPAN: AFFILIATION, FIRM SIZE, AND THE STRUCTURE OF CORPORATE OWNERSHIP

        This study examines the influence of corporate affiliation and firm size on ownership structure and lending constituents in Japan. Our findings support the notion that financial institutions concentrate their ownership positions in large companies, while the dominant ownership group of smaller companies appears to be associated larger companies. This large-small firm difference appears to be present whether the firms are affiliated formally though keiretsu membership. Our findings are consistent with the notion that corporate governance in Japan radiates from main banks to large "parent" corporations and then from these large corporations to smaller "child" corporations.

        Can Low Intensity Strength Training Alone for Older Females Improve Cardiovascular and Functional Fitness?

        BACKGROUND Maintaining muscle mass and an efficient cardiovascular system is vital for healthy aging. OBJECTIVES This study investigates if a low intensity senior strength exercise program for the older females can have an effect cardiovascular function and improve senior functional fitness. METHODS There were 22 older females, randomly divided into a strength exercise (age: 72.18 ± 4.97 yrs; height: 1.54 ± 0.06 m; weight: 58.02 ± 7.29 kg; BMI:24.43 ± 2.69 kg/m2) and control group (age: 77.63 ± 4.96 yrs; height: 1.51 ± 0.05 m; weight: 53.66 ± 6.62 kg; BMI:23.54 ± 2.22 kg/m2). The strength exercise group participated three times per week for 20 weeks, while the control group did not do any additional treatment or exercise. Participants were tested pre and post strength exercise, and the data were statistically analyzed using two-way repeated measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), with a significance level of p <0.05. RESULTS The results show significant differences (p<0.001) in homocysteine levels, with an interaction effect between time and group. There were no differences in changes in erythrocyte sedimentation rate between groups (p=0.050). There was an interaction effect (p<0.001) for the six components of the senior fitness test and between group and time in systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, and pulse pressure. CONCLUSION In conclusion the results suggest that low intensity strength exercise program can improved cardiovascular fitness related variables, and homocysteine, as well as functional fitness, blood pressure, heart rate and pulse pressure.

        Chinese Fans’ Engagement with Football: Transnationalism, Authenticity and Identity

        Football in China is undergoing an unprecedented expansion, the result of targeted industrial policy, private sector investment, and the increased popularity of the world’s most popular game in the world’s most populous nation. Yet, as China’s own football infrastructure matures and foreign clubs seek to establish new fanbases there, little is known about Chinese football fans themselves, the ways in which they express their fandom, or the methods by which they consume football. This study aims to take a first step in identifying and exploring football fandom in the People’s Republic of China, with a view to critically understanding the context out of which it has emerged, and its likely trajectory of development in the short-to-medium term. Adopting an inductive approach to survey research to explore the attitudes, behaviours and activities of Chinese football fans, an online survey resulting in 710 usable responses was conducted on a Chinese online survey platform Wenjuanxing (问卷星) for three weeks in March 2018. Our research identifies similarities with fandom found elsewhere in the world, yet with key differences generally characteristic of Chinese football fans resulting from the geography, distance and league structures of China’s domestic football infrastructure. A tendency to support more than one club, often one domestic and one foreign club, is also noted, with distinct methods of consumption which eschew traditional forms such as match attendance.

      • Microstructural Behavior of the Alumina Shell and Aluminum Core Before and After Melting of Aluminum Nanoparticles

        <P>The oxidation mechanism of nanoaluminum particles, nominally employed as fuel component, is still an unsettled problem, because of the complex nature of thermomechanical properties of the oxide shell surrounding the elemental core. Although mechanical breakage of the alumina shell upon or after melting of aluminum core has been thought to play a key role in the combustion of aluminum nanoparticles, there has been little direct evidence. In this study, the microstructural behaviors of Al core and alumina shell lattices were investigated with increasing temperatures. Three in situ techniques, high-temperature X-ray diffraction analysis, hot-stage transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy for heat-treated samples, were employed to probe the thermal behaviors of aluminum and alumina lattices before and after melting of the aluminum core. High-temperature X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that nano aluminum lattice was initially expanded under tension at room temperature, and then when heated passed through a zero-strain state at ∼300 °C. Upon further heating above the bulk melting temperature of aluminum, the aluminum lattice expanded under almost no constraint. This interesting observation, which is contrary to almost all of the previous results and models, was ascribed to the inhomogeneous (localized) crystalline phase transformation of amorphous alumina. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and in situ hot-stage transmission electron microscopy evidenced localized phase transformation accompanied by a significant shell thickening, presumably resulting from diffusion processes of Al cations and O anions, which is to absorb the pressure built in aluminum core, by creating a more ductile shell.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jpccck/2012/jpccck.2012.116.issue-1/jp2095483/production/images/medium/jp-2011-095483_0009.gif'></P>

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>List decoding of Hermitian codes is reformulated to yield an efficient and simple algorithm for the interpolation step. The algorithm is developed using the theory of Gröbner bases of modules. The computational complexity of the algorithm seems comparable to previously known algorithms achieving the same task, and the algorithm is better suited for hardware implementation.</P>

        A Biomechanical Analysis of the Effect of Pilates Exercise on Female College Students with Knee Joint Deformity

        [BACKGROUND] Current research on genu varum shows the favorable influence of exercise on the biomechanics of the knee joint by reducing the static malalignment and mechanical imbalances, however the transference to a more optimum gait has not been investigated. [OBJECTIVES] To investigate the effects of Pilates exercise on the changes of gait and lower limb malalignment in female students with genu varum. [METHODS] A total of 23 female college students with verified genu varum participated in this study. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups a Pilates exercise group (n=15) and a control group (n=8). The Pilates exercise group participated in 1 hour Pilates exercise 3 times per week for a total of 10 weeks. Each of the participants had an X-ray and performed gait 5 times before and after the exercise treatment. The participants kinetic and kinematic data were gathered using an eight Vicon Motion camera system and two force platforms. [RESULTS] For the Pilates group gait their maximum extension and internal rotation knee moment, and maximum adduction and internal rotation hip moment significantly increased, while the maximum knee moment flexion decreased. For the control group gait their maximum hip extension and hip adduction moment significantly decreased. For the Pilates group there was a significant reduction in the distance from the anatomical axis to the weight bearing line in the left leg, but there was no significant change for the control group. [CONCLUSIONS] The results suggest that Pilates exercise may be beneficial for females with genu varum by helping to improve both their static alignment and helping their gait to become more balanced.

      • Role of radiotherapy fractionation in head and neck cancers (MARCH): an updated meta-analysis

        <P><B>Summary</B></P> <P><B>Background</B></P> <P>The Meta-Analysis of Radiotherapy in squamous cell Carcinomas of Head and neck (MARCH) showed that altered fractionation radiotherapy is associated with improved overall and progression-free survival compared with conventional radiotherapy, with hyperfractionated radiotherapy showing the greatest benefit. This update aims to confirm and explain the superiority of hyperfractionated radiotherapy over other altered fractionation radiotherapy regimens and to assess the benefit of altered fractionation within the context of concomitant chemotherapy with the inclusion of new trials.</P> <P><B>Methods</B></P> <P>For this updated meta-analysis, we searched bibliography databases, trials registries, and meeting proceedings for published or unpublished randomised trials done between Jan 1, 2009, and July 15, 2015, comparing primary or postoperative conventional fractionation radiotherapy versus altered fractionation radiotherapy (comparison 1) or conventional fractionation radiotherapy plus concomitant chemotherapy versus altered fractionation radiotherapy alone (comparison 2). Eligible trials had to start randomisation on or after Jan 1, 1970, and completed accrual before Dec 31, 2010; had to have been randomised in a way that precluded prior knowledge of treatment assignment; and had to include patients with non-metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, or larynx undergoing first-line curative treatment. Trials including a non-conventional radiotherapy control group, investigating hypofractionated radiotherapy, or including mostly nasopharyngeal carcinomas were excluded. Trials were grouped in three types of altered fractionation: hyperfractionated, moderately accelerated, and very accelerated. Individual patient data were collected and combined with a fixed-effects model based on the intention-to-treat principle. The primary endpoint was overall survival.</P> <P><B>Findings</B></P> <P>Comparison 1 (conventional fractionation radiotherapy <I>vs</I> altered fractionation radiotherapy) included 33 trials and 11 423 patients. Altered fractionation radiotherapy was associated with a significant benefit on overall survival (hazard ratio [HR] 0·94, 95% CI 0·90–0·98; p=0·0033), with an absolute difference at 5 years of 3·1% (95% CI 1·3–4·9) and at 10 years of 1·2% (−0·8 to 3·2). We found a significant interaction (p=0·051) between type of fractionation and treatment effect, the overall survival benefit being restricted to the hyperfractionated group (HR 0·83, 0·74–0·92), with absolute differences at 5 years of 8·1% (3·4 to 12·8) and at 10 years of 3·9% (−0·6 to 8·4). Comparison 2 (conventional fractionation radiotherapy plus concomitant chemotherapy versus altered fractionation radiotherapy alone) included five trials and 986 patients. Overall survival was significantly worse with altered fractionation radiotherapy compared with concomitant chemoradiotherapy (HR 1·22, 1·05–1·42; p=0·0098), with absolute differences at 5 years of −5·8% (−11·9 to 0·3) and at 10 years of −5·1% (−13·0 to 2·8).</P> <P><B>Interpretation</B></P> <P>This update confirms, with more patients and a longer follow-up than the first version of MARCH, that hyperfractionated radiotherapy is, along with concomitant chemoradiotherapy, a standard of care for the treatment of locally advanced head and neck squamous cell cancers. The comparison between hyperfractionated radiotherapy and concomitant chemoradiotherapy remains to be specifically tested.</P> <P><B>Funding</B></P> <P>Institut National du Cancer; and Ligue Nationale Contre le Cancer.</P>
