        Synthesis and characterization of In2S3 nanostructures via ultrasonic method in the presence of thioglycolic acid

        In the present study, nanocrystalline In2S3 with differentmorphologies and particle sizes were obtainedvia an ultrasonic method by employing InCl34H2O, thioglycolic acid (TGA) and propylene glycol as In3+,sulfur source and solvent agent, respectively. Besides, the effects of preparation parameters such as timeand power of ultrasonic irradiation, solvent, and surfactant on the morphology and particle size of theproducts were studied. The synthesis procedure is simple and facile for the preparation of structureswith various morphologies. The morphology, structure, and composition of the as-synthesizednanostructures have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Opticalproperties of the as-prepared sample were investigated by photoluminescence (PL) and ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy.

        Preparation of magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes for an efficient adsorption and spectrophotometric determination of amoxicillin

        A magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotube nanocomposite was prepared and used as an adsorbent forremoval of amoxicillin from aqueous solutions. This nanocomposite was composed from commercialmulti-walled carbon nanotubes and iron oxide nanoparticles. The properties of this magnetic adsorbentwere characterized by scanning electron microscopy. Experiments were carried out to investigate pH ofthe solution, adsorption kinetics and capacity and the effect of adsorption dosage on the removal ofamoxicillin. Freundlich, Langmuir and D–R model were used to study the adsorption isotherms.

        Using microwave heating for synthesis of SrCO3 nanostructures with different morphologies

        Strontium carbonate (SrCO3) nanostructures were synthesized successfully via simple microwaveapproach by Sr(NO3)2, carbonate powder and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as reagents. The effects ofmicrowave time and power were investigated on product size and morphology. The products werecharacterized with X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmissionelectron microscopy (TEM), Ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) and room temperature photoluminescencespectroscopy (PL).

        Preparation and Evaluation of Cross-Linked Chitosan/Silver Sulfide Luminescence Nanocomposites by Using Green Capping Agent Against Some Pathogenic Microbial Strains

        In this paper, different silver sulfide (Ag2S) nanoparticles were cross-linked with chitosan, as a biodegradable and bioactive polymer. Chitosan/Ag2S nanocomposites were synthesized for the first time, using multistage distillation, with the micellization-assisted ultrasonic method. The designed nanocomposites system was evaluated, for in vitro efficient antibacterial activity. Various factors, including concentration of surfactants, pulse time, power irradiation, and interaction between these factors, will directly affect different properties of the crosslinked chitosan/Ag2S nanocomposites. Results showed that cross-linked nanopolymer networks are capable of considerably inhibiting growth of antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli, pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Serratia marcescens as gram-negative bacteria, and Bacillus subtilis and Micrococcus luteus as gram-positive bacteria, between 64 up and 32 μg/mL. Antibacterial activity was conducted against 7 Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria using agar well diffusion assay and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), was determined. Samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transition electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transformed infrared spectrum (FT-IR), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), and dynamic light scattering (DLS).

        Profiling of Virulence-associated Factors in Shigella Species Isolated from Acute Pediatric Diarrheal Samples in Tehran, Iran

        Objectives: The genus Shigella comprises the most infectious and diarrheagenic bacteria causing severe diseases, mostly in children under five years of age. This study aimed to detect nine virulence genes (ipaBCD, VirA, sen, set1A, set1B, ial, ipaH, stx, and sat) in Shigella species (spp.) using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (MPCR) and to determine the relation of Shigella spp. from pediatric diarrheal samples with hospitalization and bloody diarrhea in Tehran, Iran. Methods: Shigella spp. were isolated and identified using standard microbiological and serological methods. The virulence genes were detected using MPCR. Results: Seventy-five Shigella spp. (40 S. sonnei, 33 S. flexneri, 1 S. dysenteriae, and 1 S. boydii) were isolated in this study. The prevalence of ial, sen, sat, set1A, and set1B was 74.7%, 45.4%, 28%, 24%, and 24%, respectively. All S. flexneri isolates, while no S. sonnei, S. dysenteriae, or S. boydii isolates, contained sat, set1A, and set1B. All isolates were positive for ipaH, ipaBCD, and virA, while one (1.4%) of the isolates contained stx. The highest prevalence of virulence determinants was found in S. flexneri serotype IIa. Nineteen (57.6%) of 33 S. flexneri isolates were positive for ipaBCD, ipaH, virA, ial, and sat. The sen determinants were found to be statistically significantly associated with hospitalization and bloody diarrhea (p = 0.001). Conclusion: This study revealed a high prevalence of enterotoxin genes in S. flexneri, especially in serotype 2a, and has presented relations between a few clinical features of shigellosis and numerous virulence determinants of clinical isolates of Shigella spp.

        Frequency of posttrauma complications during hospital admission and their association with Injury Severity Score

        Objective Multiple trauma is associated with a remarkable risk of in-hospital complications, which harm healthcare services and patients. This study aimed to assess the incidence of posttrauma complications, their relationship with poor outcomes, and the effect of the Injury Severity Score (ISS) on their occurrence.Methods This retrospective cohort study was conducted at a pair of trauma centers, between January 2020 and December 2022. All hospitalized adult patients with multiple trauma were included in this study. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify factors related to posttrauma complications.Results Among 727 multiple trauma patients, 90 (12.4%) developed in-hospital complications. The most frequent complications were pneumonia (4.8%), atelectasis (3.7%), and superficial surgical site infection (2.5%). According to multivariable logistic regression, ISS, the length of stay in the intensive care unit (ICU), the length of stay in the hospital, and mortality were significantly associated with complications. The complication rate increased by 17% with every single-unit increase in ISS (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 1.17; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.00–1.38). Per every 1-day increase in the ICU or hospital stay, the complication rate increased by 65% (adjusted OR, 1.65; 95% CI, 1.00–2.73) and 20% (adjusted OR, 1.20; 95% CI, 1.03–1.41), respectively. Posttrauma complications were also significantly more common in patients with mortality (adjusted OR, 163.30; 95% CI, 3.04–8,779.32). In multiple trauma patients with a higher ISS, the frequency, severity, and number of complications were significantly increased.Conclusion In-hospital complications in multiple trauma patients are frequent and associated with poor outcomes and mortality. ISS is an important factor associated with posttrauma complications.
