        Present Status of Rooftop Gardening in Sylhet City Corporation of Bangladesh: an Assessment Based on Ecological and Economic Perspectives

        Present study analyzes the rooftop gardening status, floristic composition and cost and return of the rooftop garden in Sylhet City Corporation of northeastern Bangladesh. Data was collected from 450 rooftop gardeners randomly during July-September 2010. Study reveal that rooftop gardening is generally for mental satisfaction (95.3%) followed by leisure time activity (87.8%) in the study area and almost all the family members of gardeners' were involved; while collection of planting materials, sites preparation and marketing of products were reported to be carried out by males only (male 71.33%). Middle income classes were most interested in rooftop gardening (43.78%). The survey recorded 53 plant species (35 families) of which Cucurbitaceae family represented highest eight species. Shrubs (28%) were highest followed by herbs (26%) among agri-crops (36%) and flower species (30%). About 89% of the rooftop gardeners procured planting materials from nursery, market, fair, neighbor, relative and friends and they mostly prefer to use seedlings (48%) for roof gardening followed by direct seed sowing (21%). Gardeners sell products sporadically in different local markets, directly or through intermediaries, with no uniform pricing for system. Rooftop gardening improves the food security and meet nutritional deficiency to the gardeners. Survey revealed that generally very few people consider rooftop gardening commercially to get profit and from the cost-return analysis this gardening system can be economically viable if proper and scientifically managed. The study conclude that active government and NGOs could play vital role to increasing this activities by providing training and motivate people with technical aspects of rooftop gardening.

      • Identifying and mitigating imminent challenges for Korean herpetofauna: measuring the invasiveness of two alien turtles and evaluating microplastic accumulation in the wild herpetofauna

        Herpetofauna are the most vulnerable vertebrate animal groups in the world. The vulnerability is mainly related to their affinity to specific environmental conditions, prone to only known interspecific interactions (competition, prey-predator relationship, host-parasite relationship, etc.), and special physiological features. Thus, even a very little change in ecological setups, such as climate change, the introduction of new species, or encountering any element that may hamper their physiological processes, can be detrimental. Being one of the global pet trade epicenters and having traces of microplastic (MP) pollution in nature, South Korea is likely to face two of the major herpetofaunal conservation challenges from the impacts of alien invasive species and MPs in near future. Many alien turtle species are being reported from the wild and many (e.g., Trachemys scripta; TS and Pseudemys concinna; PC) are being announced as ecosystem disturbance species. On the other hand, although the accumulation and impacts of MPs remained unstudied in South Korea, herpetofauna with MP accumulation are being reported across the world and are considered one of the major threats. Hence, we plan to study- (i) the growth rates of two widely distributed invasive turtles, TS and PC, with different food items to measure the potentiality to compete and suppress the threatened native species population, and (ii) to evaluate MP accumulation in Lithobates catesbeianus (LC). We found the highest growth rate of TS with meat, whereas, PC with mixed foods. It indicates TS has a higher potentiality to compete and suppress the threatened native freshwater turtles, Mauremys reevesii as they overlap the food habits. Furthermore, we have identified three potential reservoirs from each of the city, village, and remote areas, which harbor LC, and possibly are contaminated by MPs, to see MP accumulation. This study is very important to set management policies for TS and PC. It will also help in battling against microplastic pollution, the most potential herpetofaunal conservation threat in the coming days.

        The Optimum Feeding Frequency in Growing Korean Rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) Rearing at the Temperature of 15℃ and 19℃

        Two feeding trials were conducted to determine the optimum feeding frequency in growing Korean rockfish, (Sebastes schlegeli) reared at the temperatures of $15^{\circ}C$ and $19^{\circ}C$. Fish averaging $92.2{\pm}0.7$ g (mean${\pm}$standard deviation [SD]) at $15.0{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ and $100.2{\pm}0.4g$ ($mean{\pm}SD$) at $19.0{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ water temperature were randomly distributed into each of 15 indoor tanks containing 250-L sea water from a semi-recirculation system. A total of five feeding frequency groups were set up in three replicates as follows: one meal in a day at 08:00 hour, two meals a day at 08:00 and 17:00 hours, three meals a day at 08:00, 14:00, and 20:00 hours, four meals a day at 08:00, 12:00, 16:00, and 20:00 hours, and one meal every 2 days at 08:00 hour. Fish were fed at the rate of 1.2% body weight (BW)/d at $15^{\circ}C$ and 1.5% BW/d at $19^{\circ}C$. At the end of 8 wks of feeding trial weight gain and specific growth rate were significantly higher at the fish fed groups of one meal a day and two meals a day at $15^{\circ}C$ and fish fed groups of 1 meal every 2 days at $19^{\circ}C$ were significantly lower than those of all other fish fed groups. Glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase and glutamic pyruvic transaminase of fish fed group at 1 meal every 2 days was significantly higher than those of all other fish fed groups in both experiments. Weight gain, specific growth rate and condition factor were gradually decreased as the feeding frequency increased. The results indicate that growing Korean rockfish 92 and 100 g perform better at $15^{\circ}C$ than $19^{\circ}C$ water temperature. As we expected, current results have indicated that a feeding frequency of 1 meal a day is optimal for the improvement of weight gain in growing Korean rockfish grown from 92 g to 133 g at $15^{\circ}C$ and 100 g to 132 g at $19^{\circ}C$ water temperature.

        Role of RNase on Microbial Community Analysis in the Rice and Wheat Plants Soil by 16S rDNA-DGGE

        In this work, we reported the role of RNase on microbial community analysis from soil samples. The amounts of chemical componentswere measured from the adjoining soil of rice and wheat plants. The chemical properties of these soils were rich in surfacelevel as compared to other soil layers. Total DNA was extracted from freshly collected soils. To obtain pure DNA, half of the samplewas incubated with RNase and half was without RNase. A total of 16S rDNA fragments were amplified and analyzed by DenaturingGradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE). RNase-treated DNA followed by PCR resulted in a PCR product of good yield and integrity. DGGE bands and cluster analysis indicated a significant difference between the patterns obtained from RNase-treated and RNasenon-treated samples. The sequencing results of 16S rDNA fragments from DGGE profiles of soil samples indicated that the dominantbacteria are composed of different gene sequences. This is an interesting preliminary observation which indicates that the RNasetreatment prior to amplification and DGGE analysis modifies the pattern obtained. Therefore, it is suitable for community analysis ofagricultural plant soil samples as well as environmental samples

      • 국내 양서·파충류가 직면한 문제 파악 및 완화 : 외래거북 2종의 침입성 측정 및 야생 양서·파충류의 미세플라스틱 축적 평가

        양서·파충류는 세계에서 가장 취약한 척추동물군이다. 이러한 취약성은 주로 특정 환경 조건에 대한 친화성과 관련이 있으며, 알려진 상호작용(경쟁, 포식자-피식자 관계, 숙주-기생 충 관계 등)과 같은 특수 생리학적 특징에만 영향을 미친다. 따라서 기후 변화, 새로운 종의 도입 또는 생리학적 과정을 방해할 수 있는 요소와 마주치는 것과 같은 생태학적 구조의 아 주 작은 변화라도 해로울 수 있다. 세계 애완동물 거래 지역 중 하나이며 자연에 미세플라스 틱의 오염에 흔적이 있는 한국은 가까운 장래에 외래종과 미세플라스틱의 영향으로 두 가지 주요 양서·파충류 보전 문제에 직면할 가능성이 높다. 많은 외래거북이 야생에서 보고되고 있으며 생태계교란종으로 지정되고 있다(예: 붉은귀거북(Trachemys scripta), 리버쿠터 (Pseudemys concinna). 한편, 미세플라스틱이 축적된 양서·파충류는 전 세계적으로 보고되고 있으며 주요 위협 중 하나로 간주되고 있으나, 현재 국내에서는 미세플라스틱의 축적과 영향 에 대한 연구가 미비한 상태이다. 따라서 본 연구를 통해 (i) 멸종위기 개체군과 경쟁할 가능 성을 갖고 있으며 전국에 넓게 분포하고 있는 생태계교란종인 붉은귀거북과 리버쿠터의 먹이 원에 따른 성장률과, (ii) 황소개구리(Lithobates catesbeianus)에서 미세플라스틱 축적을 평가 하고자 한다. 그 결과로 붉은귀거북은 고기를 먹인 개체군에서 가장 높은 성장률이 나타났으 며, 리버쿠터는 혼합사료(거북전용)에서 성장률이 가장 높게 나타났다. 이것은 붉은귀거북이 가 멸종위기 종인 남생이(Mauremys reevesii)의 먹이원과 유사하기 때문에 경쟁할 가능성이 더 높다는 것을 나타낸다. 또한 본 연구에서는 황소개구리가 서식하고 있으며 미세플라스틱 에 오염되었을 가능성이 있는 도심지, 농업용, 산림에 있는 저수지 3개를 확인하고자 한다. 본 연구는 붉은귀거북과 리버쿠터에 대한 관리정책을 수립하는데 매우 중요할 것으로 판단된 다. 또한 앞으로 잠재적인 양서·파충류 보존의 위협이 될 미세플라스틱의 오염에 대한 관리 에 도움이 될 것으로 판단된다.

      • Investigating Main Causes for Schedule Delay in Construction Projects in Bangladesh

        Delay is the most common problem in the construction industry. It has many negative effects on project's success in terms of time, cost, quality, and safety. From the literature review, a total of thirty-five factors of delay were selected. These factors were divided into seven groups related to materials, manpower, owner, consultant, contractor, construction, and external problems. This study was carried out to identify the main causes of delay for a construction project through their importance level. The importance level was determined based on the frequency of occurrence and severity of impact. The structured questionnaire has distributed to the respondents who have much experience in construction management in Bangladesh. The results of analysis indicated that top five factors of construction delay according to their level of importance are: (1) price of construction materials increased very rapidly, (2) political situation (revolution/ public strikes), (3) shortages of skilled workers, (4) poor site management and supervision by contractor, (5) incompetent/ immature subcontractors. These findings of this study are expected to be significant contributions to Bangladesh construction industry in controlling current performance of project on time overrun.

      • Development of Time-Cost Models for Building Construction Projects in Bangladesh

        Estimating time and cost is an important mission in the early phase of a construction project, especially in feasibility study. It provides a foundation for making decision whether or not the project is performed on schedule and within budget. Thus, reliability of this estimate plays a key role in measuring the success of a project. This study was carried out to investigate the time-cost relationship in building construction projects in Bangladesh. The mathematical equation used in this study is based on Bromilow's equation. The research data were collected from sixty-three completed building projects through questionnaire survey. Type of clients, type of projects, and tender methods are the project characteristics considered in this study. The results of analysis indicated that the Bromilow's time-cost (BTC) models developed for each project characteristic are appropriate due to quite high coefficient of determination and relatively small mean percent errors. Among them, the forecasted model for time and cost according to tender methods is the best fit model. It is concluded that the BTC model could be applied in building construction project to predict its time and cost in Bangladesh. Four different regression models were also developed in this study. The results of BTC model between some selected countries were compared to gain the comprehensive view.

        A Study on Non Destructive Evaluation of the Steam Turbine L-0 Blades

        The Nuclear and Fossil Steam Turbines record a considerable number of failures annually. Some of these failures reported are as result of blade failure. The failure of the L-0 blade in a Steam Turbine is one of the most reported blade failure in Nuclear and Fossil steam turbines. This paper seeks to identify the best Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) method or methods to be used in the steam turbine L-0 blades inspection process. The development of systems engineering processes presents an opportunity to apply NDE inspection to the L-0 blades. This process apply computer modelling of the L-0 using ANSYS and by simulating the stresses experienced by the L-0 blade during operation it is possible to identify the most susceptible areas for crack formation and growth. The results from these models compared to industry data for validation. The analysis of these results used to predict the most probable failure location and failure modes. Therefore NDE inspection can be applied to these areas with greater degree of accuracy. This would be beneficial in the increasing the accuracy in the detection of cracks and hence save inspection time and the overall inspection cost. Furthermore, not only the location for crack formation and NDE inspection determined but also best the NDE inspection technique/techniques to be applied appropriately on the L-0 blade are prescribed.
