Socio-Cultural Traits and Gender Elements: An Analysis through Indian Diaspora in Germany

        Maya Subrahmanian 건국대학교 아시아・디아스포라연구소 2022 International Journal of Diaspora&Cultural Critici Vol.12 No.2

What makes a culture and what are the cultural traits identified by people are important questions to be developed more within diaspora studies. This article proposes a critical inquiry into the ways of defining socio-cultural traits through the discussions with Indian diaspora living in the context of Western culture. It suggests hypothesis that there is a possibility of hybrid cultures between the Eastern and Western. The ontological status of being ‘Indian’ would be different while living in India and abroad, and the cultural ontology in those subject positions would also vary to produce hybrid cultures. Theories of migration, culture and gender constitute a background and framework in this study. Reflections on cultural identity and cultural traits are obtained in this study through direct interviews with diaspora Indians living in Germany. In this process of analyses, the methodology of gender is adopted along with other methods of qualitative research to see how the socio-cultural perspectives change after migration to Western cultures, and how those are different among men and women. The preliminary argument derived in this article is that cultural traits can be traced in aspects of people’s daily life, but not only through dominant art forms, literature or historical monuments. It is done with a critical perspective on the existing dominant methods of defining culture. This study has a critic on existing methodologies that are Eurocentric, male-centric and neglecting the individual and mundane experiences of people who live in varied cultural contexts with complex cultural identities.

Changing trends of land surface temperature in relation to land use/cover around thermal power plant in Singrauli district, Madhya Pradesh, India

Maya Kumari,Kiranmay Sarma 대한공간정보학회 2017 Spatial Information Research Vol.25 No.6

India’s energy capital—Singrauli, has conglomeration of various thermal power plants and operational coal mines. Earlier, the area was densely forested, rich in biodiversity and home to various tribal communities. In the last decade, the area has been exploited by the private sector for setting up large scale power generation plants. The land use and its pattern and land surface temperature (LST) were studied for the Sasan Ultra Mega Thermal Power Plant covering an area of 10 km2 for 3 years—2005, 2010 and 2015, respectively. Chronologically, the year 2005 is the phase of pre-establishment of the thermal power plant; the year 2010 specifies the construction phase and 2015 is the operational phase. Landsat ETM and Landsat 8 data of remote sensing system were used for this study. The land use/cover (LULC) study shows a significant decrease in the forest cover and barren rocky land, and a dramatic expansion in vegetation and wastelands. These changes in LULC have together widened the range of LST with an overall rise of 6.69 C and an overall decline in the NDVI value from the year 2005 to 2015. The results of Pearson’s correlation analysis depict an inverse co-relationship between LST and NDVI for the study area. Therefore, LST and NDVI are two important parameters to study the metropolitan ecosystem and can be used as an effective tool for evaluating environmental influence on ecosystems.

      • Ergonomics Design Evaluation of Trigger Firearm Handgun

        Maya Arlini Puspasari,Boy Nurtjahyo Moch.,Erlinda Muslim,Tansha Muwarman 대한인간공학회 2014 대한인간공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2014 No.5

This study discusses the evaluation of ergonomic design of the trigger the type of firearm gun to use as soldiers shooting practice. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the mechanical stress on the finger is too heavy or too light towards energy released by the soldier index finger. Several analyzes were conducted in the form of spring mechanics calculation that is used as a torque in the opposite direction of the force againts the direction of the index finger presses. Changes of movement of index finger angle when press the trigger is also recorded and analyzed. From the analysis of the results obtained mechanical calculation is smaller than handgrip data of soldiers obtained by handgrip dynamometer. From the analysis of the biomechanics of the index finger showed a comfortable position when presses the trigger pistol stages.

      • Transparency Analysis of a Scaled Teleoperation System with Encoder Noise

Maya Wulandari,Dong Soo Kwon 제어로봇시스템학회 2009 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2009 No.8

The main goal of teleoperation control design problem is to provide total transparency to make the operatorfeel as if he is manipulating the remote object directly. However, it has not been possible to achieve perfecttransparency. One of the possible reasons might be due to the presence of encoder noise. In this paper, transparencyanalysis for scaled teleoperation system; force-position and four-channel control architecture have been doneconsidering the effect of encoder noise. Low-pass filters have been used to restrict the effect of the noise and hence, newcriteria, relating the control parameters, the scaling factors, and the frequency of teleoperation system, have beenobtained to achieve better transparency in spite of the presence of noise. Simulation results show that for lowfrequencies, high position to force scaling ratio, and optimal gain controller, the transparency increases as thetransmitted impedance matches the scaled environment impedance.

Violence Triangle in Context of Indonesian Comfort Women

Maya Dania,Nichan Singhaputargun 이화여자대학교 국제통상협력연구소 2020 Asian International Studies Review Vol.21 No.2

Japan established a system that forced women into becoming comfort women in the Dutch East Indies during World War II. The women provided sexual services to Japanese soldiers in military brothels on a daily basis. However, after the war the Indonesian government did nothing in the areas of punishment or compensation. Adopting the concept of Johan Galtung’s Violence Triangle, this paper argues that the Indonesian comfort women experienced three dimensions of violence: 1) visible and direct violence from Japanese soldiers as the perpetrators; 2) less tangible structural violence from state institutions and 3) cultural violence from the local community. The research finds the Indonesian comfort women experienced interlocking domains of violence.

The Effects of Dictogloss Tasks on EFL Learners’ Syntactic Development

        ( Maya Hyunjeong Lee ),( Jaewoo Shim ),( Heechul Lee ) 대한언어학회 2018 언어학 Vol.26 No.2

The study aimed to investigate if bottom-up process based dictogloss tasks made any significant differences to the syntactic development of learners’ target language and to discuss what factors contributed to the changes in the length and the complexity of their utterances. The data were collected from a group of three university students who were taking an English course at a large national university in South Korea. The salient interaction patterns were isolated and coded and analyzed using T units. To ensure the trustworthiness of the study, multiple sources of data, such as classroom observations and interviews, were also collected and examined. The T unit analysis revealed that some learners benefitted from dictogloss activities as shown in their increased T units and constant engagement with form, their increase in parsing and processing ability, and their active negotiation of meaning through collaborative dialogue.

      • Transferring the Dharma Message of the Master – Inscriptions on Korean Monk Portraits from the Chosŏn Period

Maya Stiller 서울대학교 규장각한국학연구원 2008 Seoul journal of Korean studies Vol.21 No.2

This article aims to give an overview of the inscriptions written on Korean Buddhist monk portraits, which serve as important means to understand the motivation of the donors who financed their production, and to explore the main functions of the portraits to the dharma descendants of the depicted. As will be seen in the examples of the sixteen portraits of the State Preceptors from Songgwangsa, lay persons as well as Buddhist monks donated money for the making of monk portraits in order to accumulate merit. It is in the painting inscriptions that these motivations are revealed. The eulogies provide information about the personal relations between the depicted and his scholar-friends and disciples, information that offers a significant contribution to the understanding of Chosŏn dynasty Buddhism. Eulogies written by famous scholars, and lengthy portrait titles, enhance the representative function of the portraits to serve as authorizing devices for the dharma lineage of the designated temple. In other words, by writing a eulogy, the scholars served as multiplicators of their friend’s fame and reputation. However, the portraits were commissioned by the disciples, and had never been authorized by the depicted masters themselves. The making of the portraits could thereby assist the disciples in constructing a designated temple’s dharma lineage. The eulogies written by the disciples enhance this notion, as they show the wish for the spread of the prestige and fame of the master. For the disciples, a portrait of their master symbolized the continuity of their lineage. At the same time, their eulogies also make one point very clear: a portrait is nothing but an expedient to comprehend the awakened mind of an eminent deceased master.

Valorization of orange industry residues to form a natural coagulant and adsorbent

Maya Kebaili,Souad Djellali,Manelle Radjai,Nadjib Drouiche,Hakim Lounici 한국공업화학회 2018 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.64 No.-

The availability of by-products released as a result of the fruit processing development is a potential study area highlighting the possibility of valorizing them. This study presents an investigation on the valorization of orange juice factory pith and peel waste in terms of the recovering pectin and an adsorbent WT (Waste Treated). The recovered pectin was used in the removal of turbidity and the formed adsorbent was used for the removal of methylene blue (MB) and indigo carmine (IC) dyes. The pectin yield obtained under extraction conditions (pH 1.5, temperature 80–82 °C and extraction time 60 min) was found to be 16.32% and presenting moisture contain 10%, an ash contains 2.28 and an esterification degree of 65.21. With a dose of 6 mg/l, pectin used alone was able to reduce about 99% of initial turbidity at pH 3 after 30 min of settling time. For the waste recovered after the extraction of the pectin, an absorbance of 70.5% of the MB is obtained compared to 16.34% for IC which shows that our support is perfect to eliminate the cationic dye. Hence, N’GAOUS factory orange waste can be valorized in water treatment as a natural coagulant and adsorbent for water treatment with low environmental risks.

      • QoS Broker based Architecture for Dynamic Web Service Discovery and Composition

Maya Rathore,Ugrasen Suman 보안공학연구지원센터 2014 International Journal of u- and e- Service, Scienc Vol.7 No.6

With the widespread proliferation of web services, the demand on highly reliable and available services increases to satisfy business and personal needs. As the number of functionally similar web service increases on the Internet, Quality of Service (QoS) based web service selection and composition has gained much attention. However, the existing architectures for runtime service composition requires discovery of all functionally similar services, which consumes too much time. Instead, it can be possible to discover only those services which are highly reliable and thus included in composition. This issue can be solved by introducing a broker based architecture for automated dynamic web service discovery and composition in which the composition operation accepts as input a set optimized services along with their QoS specifications. The proposed architecture is able to reduce the composition time by performing optimized selection of services using Local Selection and Local Optimization (LSLO) approach during service composition. The architecture is fault tolerant and ensures improved reputation prediction accuracy of selected services using Mixed Opinion based Reputation Prediction (MORP) approach. In this paper, a comparative analysis is also performed on the basis of set of criterion to analyze the existing dynamic web service discovery and composition architectures for their strengths and weaknesses.

Ocular Indicators as Fatigue Detection Instruments for Indonesian Drivers

        Maya Arlini Puspasari,Hardianto Iridiastadi,Iftikar Zahedi Sutalaksana,Ade Sjafruddin 대한산업공학회 2019 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.18 No.4

Fatigue is a well-known major cause of road accidents. Ocular indicators have been regarded as reliable indicators formeasuring fatigue. However, results from previous investigations remain unclear about the performance of ocular parameters to detect fatigue in a real-time driving condition. This study was aimed at evaluating performance of severalresponsive ocular measures to detect fatigue during a simulated driving task. Thirteen participants drove a mediumfidelity driving simulator continuously for 3 hours in high and low traffic density, after normal sleep duration (8 h)and sleep-deprived condition (4 h). Results from the present study showed that sleep deprivation substantially affectsblink duration, percentage of eye closure (PERCLOS), microsleep, slow eye movement (SEM), and saccadic parameters. Traffic density, however, only had moderate effect toward ocular parameters. Among all ocular indicators, blinkduration, PERCLOS, and saccadic PV demonstrated high accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity to detect fatigue. Thepresent study suggests that blink duration has the highest performance to detect low-level fatigue and heavy fatigue, with a cut-off value of 285.17 ms and 512.31 ms, respectively, compared to other ocular indicators. The implicationsof this study are implementing a fatigue detection device based on blink duration, PERCLOS, and saccadic PV parameters.
