        MIMO Techniques for Green Radio Guaranteeing QoS

        Environmental issues and the need to reduce energy consumption for lowering operating costs have pushed power efficiency to become one of the major issues of current research in the field of wireless networks. This paper addresses a number of multiple input multiple output (MIMO) precoding and scheduling techniques across the PHY and MAC layers that can operate under a reduced link budget and collectively improve the transmit power efficiency of a base station, while maintaining the same levels of service. Different MIMO transmission and precoding schemes proposed for LTE, achieving varying degrees of multiuser diversity in both the time, frequency as well as the space domain, are examined. Several fairness-aware resource allocation algorithms are applied to the considered MIMO schemes and a detailed analysis of the tradeoffs between power efficiency and quality of service is presented. This paper explicitly examines the performance of a system serving real-time, VoIP traffic under different traffic loading conditions and transmit power levels. It is demonstrated that by use of efficient scheduling and resource allocation techniques significant savings in terms of consumed energy can be achieved, without compromising QoS.

      • AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE ANTECEDENTS AND CONSEQUENCES OF EXPORT RELATIONSHIP CAPABILITIES

        This study investigates the role of knowledge sharing in the development of relationship capabilities, focusing on the interaction between exporting organizations and their foreign partners. Knowledge sharing can be defined as the activities of how to assist communities of people work together, facilitating the exchange of their knowledge, enhancing organizational learning capacity, and increasing their ability to attain individual and organizational goals. Knowledge sharing facilitates the development of innovative ideas, creates new business opportunities through the learning process of knowledge workers, and increases the ability of employees to achieve individual and organizational objectives. The exchange of information and knowledge is crucially important in an export marketing context, as a result of the increasing complexity and volatility of the international business environment and the information asymmetry between exporters and their foreign distributors. Knowledge sharing between the two parties enables exporters to gain a better understanding of local market conditions and develop appropriate products that fit the needs and preferences of end-user customers. In an effort to fill an important gap in the export marketing literature, the present study develops and empirically tests a conceptual model of the organizational factors that stimulate the adoption of an export knowledge sharing behavior, the relationship between export knowledge sharing behavior and export relationship capabilities, and the resulting positive outcomes for exporting organizations. The study develops seven research hypotheses, which are then tested using data collected from a sample of Greek direct exporters by means of an online survey. The key informant in this study is the head of exporting activities (hereafter referred to as export executive). The study employs available guidelines in the literature regarding the collection of high quality data from key informants, questionnaire design, and measure development and validation. The data analysis procedure involves the assessment of the psychometric properties of the measurement scales and the estimation of a structural equation model. Study findings provide support for all seven research hypotheses. More specifically, results indicate that the prevalence of an organizational culture that supports knowledge sharing is an important factor that enhances the adoption of export knowledge sharing behavior by export executives. Similarly, export executives’ attitudes towards knowledge sharing have a positive effect on their knowledge sharing behavior. Organizational culture and export knowledge sharing behavior have a positive influence on an exporting organization’s relationship capabilities. In turn, export relationship capabilities have a significant positive effect on export product advantage and export market performance. Finally, a strong positive relationship is evident between export product advantage and export market performance.

        SPORTS BETTING MONOPOLIES REACHING A CRITICAL POINT

        Every Member State in Europe has a wide discretionary power to choose which specific restrictive measures will be taken to achieve the purpose of containing the consumer’s natural propensity to gambling and suppress the incitement to squander money on gambling. To this date Member States have not selected the same degree of protection nor the same measures. The selected measures range from introducing a licensing system for gambling service providers to even imposing private monopolies. ECJ’s decision in the famous Markus Stoss case answered what was supposed to be the last of many questions on betting monopolies and oligopolies. However there is one last case scenario that remains unanswered. In some countries sports betting monopolies are entrusted to companies listed on the stock exchange without any obligation to implement a responsible gambling policy. These questions have recently been referred to the ECJ. Is the ECJ’s answer to these questions going to be the beginning of the end for sports betting monopolies in Europe?

        GALAXIES ON DIET: FEEDBACK SIGNATURES IN RADIO-AGN HOST GALAXIES

        There exists strong evidence supporting the co-evolution of central supermassive black holesand their host galaxies; however it is still under debate how such a relation comes about and whether itis relevant for all or only a subset of galaxies. An important mechanism connecting AGN to their hostgalaxies is AGN feedback, potentially heating up or even expelling gas from galaxies. AGN feedbackmay hence be responsible for the eventual quenching of star formation and halting of galaxy growth. Arich multi-wavelength dataset ranging from the X-ray regime (\textit{Chandra}), to far-IR (\textit{Herschel}), and radio(\textit{WSRT}) is available for the North Ecliptic Pole field, most notably surveyed by the \textit{AKARI} infraredspace telescope, covering a total area on the sky of 5.4 sq. degrees. We investigate the star formationproperties and possible signatures of radio feedback mechanisms in the host galaxies of 237 radiosources below redshift z = 2 and at a radio 1.4 GHz flux density limit of 0.1 mJy. Using broadbandSED modelling, the nuclear and host galaxy components of these sources are studied simultaneously as a function of their radio luminosity. Here we present results concerning the AGN content of the radio sources in this field, while also offering evidence showcasing a link between AGN activity and host galaxy star formation. In particular, we show results supporting a maintenance type of feedback from powerful radio-jets.

        A TALE OF TWO FEEDBACKS: STAR FORMATION IN THE HOST GALAXIES OF RADIO AGNs

        <P>Several lines of argument support the existence of a link between activity at the nuclei of galaxies, in the form of an accreting supermassive black hole, and star formation activity in these galaxies. Radio jets have long been argued to be an ideal mechanism that allows active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to interact with their host galaxies and affect star formation. We use a sample of radio sources in the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) field to study the nature of this putative link, by means of spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. We employ the excellent spectral coverage of the AKARI infrared space telescope and the rich ancillary data available in the NEP to build SEDs extending from UV to far-IR wavelengths. We find a significant AGN component in our sample of relatively faint radio sources (<mJy). A positive correlation is found between the luminosity of the AGN component and that of star formation in the host galaxy, independent of the radio luminosity. In contrast, for narrow redshift and AGN luminosity ranges, we find that increasing radio luminosity leads to a decrease in the specific star formation rate. The most radio-loud AGNs are found to lie on the main sequence of star formation for their respective redshifts. For the first time, we potentially see such a two-sided feedback process in the same sample. We discuss the possible suppression of star formation, but not total quenching, in systems with strong radio jets, that supports the maintenance nature of feedback from radio AGN jets.</P>
