The protonation parameters, dissociation constants (pKBH+) of conjugate acid, slope values (m, ϕ and m*) and correlation coefficients (r) of hydroxamic acids were determined by Hammett acidity function method, Bunnett- Olsen method and excess acidity method in hydrochloric and perchloric acid solutions. Effect of acid concentration on partition and percentage protonation was also studied. pKBH+ values show that hydroxamic acids do not behave as Hammett bases, but hydroxamic acids behave as weak bases in strong acidic solutions. The values of pKBH+ obtained through Bunnett-Olsen method and excess acidity method were compared with the Hammett acidity function. ChemAxon’s MarvinSketch 6.1.5 software was also used for determining pKa, pI and microspecies distribution (%) of hydroxamic acids with pH. Hydrogen donor and acceptor values and logD were also obtained. The results show that N-p-chlorophenyl-4- bromobenzohydroxamic acid has the highest pKa and lowest logD values. On the contrary, N-phenyl-3,5-dinitrobenzohydroxamic acid has lowest the pKa and highest logD values.

Multiferroics having composition Bi0.80-xBa0.20HoxFeO3 (BBFO, BBHFO5, BBHFO10, BBHFO15 and BBHFO20 for x=0.0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20 respectively) were synthesized by method of solid state reaction. The crystal structure has been studied using X-ray diffraction technique. The X-ray patterns show enormous transform in crystal structure at concentration x=0.20. The Rietveld refinement of XRD patterns indicates that at concentration x=0.0 sample have rhombohedral structure with R3c space group while for the concentration x=0.05, 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20, the mixed phase including rhombohedral R3c and triclinic P1 space groups were obtained with best fitting. This phase transformation in crystal structure is observed due to mismatching of ionic radii of doped ions and parent ions. Magnetic properties of all samples were carried out by using vibrating sample magnetometry. M-H hysteresis loops shows that with doping of Ba and Ho antiferromagnetic BiFeO3 (BFO) transforms into ferromagnetic. The dielectric and ferroelectric measurements were carried out which shows that dielectric constant, dielectric loss and ferroelectric properties are enhanced with co-doping of Ho in comparison of the pristine BFO due to structure deformation and decrease in oxygen vacancies with higher concentration of Ho. Significant improvement has been observed in dielectric constant and remnant magnetization values with increasing content of Ho and decrease in the dielectric loss.

Background: In India smokeless tobacco users account for 25.9% of total tobacco use, Gutkha being the most common form. This study evaluated the association between serum lipid profile and Gutkha use as an early diagnostic and/or prognostic indicator for oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) and oral cancer (Oral Ca) in non-smokers and non-alcohol consumers. Materials and Methods: A total of 163 participants were recruited from two sites in India. Participants were divided into four groups: individuals without any Gutkha chewing habit and without any oral lesions (control group), individuals with Gutkha chewing habit but without any oral lesions (GWL), patients with a confirmed clinical diagnosis of OSMF, and patients with a confirmed diagnosis of Oral Ca. Mixed linear modelling (MLM) was conducted to detect the change in mean serum lipid levels among four groups. Results: The sample consisted of 69% males and 31% females. Results of MLM show an inverse relationship between serum lipid levels in OSMF, and Oral Ca groups when compared to the control group. Conclusions: The results of our study demonstrated that GWL, OSMF and Oral Ca patients had lower serum lipid levels. Low serum lipid levels could be an indicator of initial neoplastic changes in oral cancer.

Leucas aspera Link. (Lamiaceae) is an important medicinal plant in indigenous systems of medicinecomunities find diverse medicinal properties. It is used as antipyretic, stimulant, expectorant and diaphoreticdrug. The present communication deals with the detailed pharmacognostical evaluation of whole plant of L.aspera collected from five different geographical zones of the country-Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Karnataka, WestBengal and Gujarat. The botanical characters and TLC fingerprint profile of all the samples were quite similar butsome variations were observed in physicochemical parameters. However, some microscopical characters and TLCprofile can be used as diagnostic characters for identification of , for example amphistomachic leavesand two types of trichomes-abundant, non glandular, uniseriate, 1-3 celled and few glandular, 2-5 celled stalk withrounded tip. Presence of some components at Rfs-0.56, 0.65 and 0.76 under UV 366 and at Rfs-0.31, 0.43, 0.60,0.76 and 0.82 under visible light after derivetization in TLC profile may also be used as diagnostic character.

Many mechanical, electrical and electronic products have more than one performance characteristics (PCs). For example the performance degradation of rubidium discharge lamps can be characterized by the rubidium consumption or the decreasing intensity the lamp. The product may degrade due to all the PCs which may be independent or dependent. This paper deals with the design of optimal bivariate step-stress partially accelerated degradation test (PADT) with degradation paths modelled by gamma process. The dependency between PCs has been modelled through Frank copula function. In partial step-stress loading, the unit is tested at usual stress for some time, and then the stress is accelerated. This helps in preventing over-stressing of the test specimens. Failure occurs when the performance characteristic crosses the critical value the first time. Under the constraint of total experimental cost, the optimal test duration and the optimal number of inspections at each intermediate stress level are obtained using variance optimality criterion.

Pharmacognostical Evaluation of Gymnema sylvestre R. Br.
Adarsh Kumar Agnihotri,Sayyada Khatoon,Manisha Agarwal,Ajay Kumar Singh Rawat,Shanta Mehrotra,Palpu Pushpangadan 한국생약학회 2004 Natural Product Sciences Vol.10 No.4
In India, Gymnema sylvestre due to the unique property of the plant to antagonize the sweet taste is known as ‘Gur-mar’. It has several ethnomedicinal values as various tribals/traditional communities and rural peoples of India find diverse medicinal uses viz. antidiabetic, stomachic, diuretic, and is useful in cough and throat troubles. Besides, it has strong effect on reducing blood sugar. The present communication deals with the detailed pharmacognostical evaluation of the aerial parts of G. sylvestre collected from three places of the country- Varanasi (U.P), Panchmarhi (M.P), Salem (Tami Nadu) and commercial sample procured from local market. The botanical and physico-chemical parameters of all the samples were quite similar though little variations were observed in foaming index, alcohol and water soluble extractives of local sample. The microscopic characteristics of the drug are horse shoe shaped petiole with 3 amphicribal vascular bundles, sieve tubes well developed; anomocytic stomata only on the abaxial surface of the leaf, the fan shapedamphicribal vascular bundle, presence of intraxylary phloem. The TLC fingerprint profile of all the samples was more or less similar only the quantity of some of the compounds varied.
