This paper proposes a novel method to designing an H∞ PID controller with robust stability and disturbance attenuation. This method uses particle swarm optimization algorithm to minimize a cost function subject to H∞ -norm to design robust performance PID controller. We propose two cost functions to design of a multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) and single-input, single-output (SISO) robust performance PID controller. We apply this method to a SISO flexible-link manipulator and a MIMO super maneuverable F18/HARV fighter aircraft system as two challenging examples to il-lustrate the design procedure and to verify performance of the proposed PID controller design method-ology. It is shown with the MIMO super maneuverable F18/HARV fighter system that PSO performs well for parametric optimization functions and performance of the PSO-based method without prior domain knowledge is superior to those of existing GA-based and OSA-based methods for designing H∞ PID controllers.

Concentric bracings composed of three members arranged in y shaped geometry have been traditionally used to provide openings in braced bays. However, simultanous occurance of compression in three braces leads to instability and out of plane buckling of braces accompanied by low hysteretic energy absorption. In order to study the behavior of y-braced frames, a research program including experimental tests was conducted at BHRC† structural engineering laboratory. Quasi-static cyclic loading was applied to specimens including four full-scale two-bay frames with y-bracings of different cross sections and connection types. The bays are braced symmetrically to have a combination of tensile and compressive braces at all loading stages. The results show that out-of-plane buckling with single curvature in braces can be substituted by in plane, double curvature buckling through appropriate detailing of cross sections and connections. Thus, hysteretic energy dissipation of ybracing is remarkably improved due to spreading of plastic strains in braces. In this paper, seismic performance of y-braced frame specimens and a reference X-braced frame are also assessed by capacity spectrum method.

Exact closed-form solutions have been derived for stresses and the displacements in thick spherical shells made of functionally graded materials with exponential-varying properties subjected to internal and external pressure. Poisson’s ratio is assumed to be constant. The obtained results show that the inhomogeneity properties of FGMs have a significant influence on the displacement and stresses distribution along the radial direction. A numerical solution using finite element method is also presented and good agreement was found between the analytical solutions and the solutions carried out through the FEM. The values used in this study are arbitrarily chosen to demonstrate the effect of inhomogeneity on displacements and stresses distributions.

A green and efficient method for the synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones and -thiones through one-pot three-component reaction of ethyl acetoacetate, an aryl aldehyde, and urea or thiourea in acetonitrile using silica gel-supported polyphosphoric acid (PPA-$SiO_2$) as catalyst is described. Compared to the classical Biginelli reaction conditions, the present methodology offers several advantages such as high yields, relatively short reaction times, mild reaction condition and a recyclable catalyst with a very easy work up.

Objective Urolithiasis is one of the most common urological diseases worldwide, usually presenting as renal colic that leads to severe pain that requires analgesic treatment. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of ketamine and desmopressin in the pain management of renal colic patients. Methods This double-blind, randomized clinical trial was conducted on renal colic patients referred to the emergency department from June 2021 to July 2022. Patients were randomly assigned to three groups. In the desmopressin group, patients were treated with intranasal desmopressin and intravenous ketorolac. The ketamine group was treated with intranasal ketamine and ketorolac. The control group received ketorolac and an intranasal placebo. Vital signs were evaluated at baseline and 60 minutes; and pain scores were assessed at baseline, 10, 30, and 60 minutes after treatment. Results Enrollment included 135 patients, the mean (standard deviation) age was 44.1±11.4 years, and 82 (60.7%) were men. The mean visual analog scale scores were significantly lower at 10, 30, and 60 minutes in the ketamine group (5.6±1.2, 3.0±1.1, and 0.9±0.9, respectively) compared to the control (8.2±1.1, 5.1±2.0, and 2.3±2.6, respectively) and desmopressin (6.7±1.8, 4.2±2.2, and 1.3±1.4, respectively) groups (P<0.05). Although patients in the desmopressin group had lower mean pain scores than the control group at 10, 30, and 60 minutes, this difference was only significant at 10 minutes after the intervention (P<0.05). No significant differences in vital signs were found at 60 minutes after treatment. Conclusion Ketamine showed more favorable analgesic effects in renal colic patients than desmopressin, although desmopressin showed efficacy in the first minutes posttreatment.
