The rheological and diffusion properties of blends of agar/guar gum, agar/Phytagel and Phytagel/guar gum were analysed and compared to those properties of agar or Phytagel applied alone at two different gelling concentrations. Moreover, their effects on the shoot multiplication of the apple scion Galaxy and two black locust clones (SF63, SF82) were studied, and their cost benefits over agar were calculated. Elastic hydrogel formation was demonstrated for each blend by rheological measurements, but the gel strength depended on the types and concentrations of the applied gelling agents and blends. Guar gum was able to speed the diffusion in the different blends, and diffusion was independent of gel strength. The rate of shoot multiplication increased (to 8.9 shoots per explant) and the percent of hyperhydrated shoots decreased (to 12%) when the blend of agar/guar gum was used for the shoot multiplication of apple. Similarly, the highest multiplication rates of black locust clones (between 3.9 and 4.1) were obtained on media solidified by blends containing guar gum. The best shoot performance with the lowest percent of hyperhydrated shoots (11-12% in SF63 and 2-23% in SF82) was achieved using agar alone or the agar/guar gum blend. The shoot multiplication was improved of both species and the production cost was reduced by 42% by using the agar/guar gum blend.

This study investigates the effectiveness of the reflection-based reciprocal teaching (RBRT) approach for Myanmar upper secondary school students’ reading comprehension in English. In the RBRT approach, the main frame is based on the reflective teaching model for reading comprehension (Oo and Habók in Int Electron J Elementary Educ 13(1):127–138, 2020), in which the reciprocal teaching method (involving questioning, clarifying, summarizing, and predicting) was applied. This study used cluster randomized trials. Two groups participated in the research: the experimental group, who were taught with the RBRT approach, and the control group, who were taught with traditional methods. Results showed that the RBRT approach has a strong effect on students’ English reading comprehension achievement. The experimental group increased its achievement on the posttest significantly, and the students’ results showed high effect size. It was also found that teachers’ reflection on the instructional context had a considerable impact on raising students’ reading comprehension achievement. The RBRT approach can be successfully applied in the classroom environment to develop students’ reading comprehension in English in Myanmar.

Viscosity of the suspending medium can be a determinant contributor to the effective measurements of red blood cell deformability using ektacytometry. Deformability of erythrocyte is known to show inter-species and gender differences, therefore the evaluation of the effects and the standardized usage of the suspending media are important in animal experiments. For evaluating the differences using various viscosity media, we aimed to test male and female Sprague-Dawley rats and beagle dogs. Blood samples were collected and red blood cell deformability was tested by a RheoScan-D200 slit-flow ektacytometer using parallel measurements in PVP solutions at viscosity of 15, 20 and 30mPa.s. The lowest elongation index values were measured in 15mPa.s solution in both species and genders. The inter-species differences were obvious: rats had higher elongation index values. Gender differences were found only in 20 and 30mPa.s samples: in rats males, while in dogs females had better red blood cell deformability. The standard usage of PVP solutions is essential for comparative studies, because the results obtained from different viscosity PVP solutions are not comparable to each other. In Sprague-Dawley rats and beagle dogs the relatively less viscous media (<20mPa.s) may result in less informative data.
