Two Unrecorded Species of the Snapper (Perciformes: Lutjanidae) Collected from Jeju Island, Korea

Two unrecorded species of the snapper, Lutjanus malabaricus (296.0 mm standard length [SL]) and L. stellatus (350.0 mm SL) belonging to the family Lutjanidae, were first collected from the western coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea. L. malabaricus is characterized by having a dark marking on the upper half of the caudal peduncle, a band of vomerine teeth that does not protrude posteriorly at the middle, and nine anal soft rays. Compared to its Korean relative, L. malabaricus is distinguishable by having rows of scales that run obliquely in the dorsal-posterior direction above the lateral line (vs. parallel to the lateral line in L. argentimaculatus). L. stellatus can be identified by the absence of wavy blue lines on the head (vs. many blue lines in L. rivulatus) and presence of a white spot above the lateral line (vs. a black blotch on the lateral line in L. rivulatus). We propose new Korean names, Jin-hong-tung-dom” and “Huin-jeom-tung-dom,” for L. malabaricus and L. stellatus, respectively.
Modeling and evaluation of serial multicast remote procedure calls (RPCs)

<P>The need for serial multicast remote procedure calls (RPCs) arises in many distributed systems to avoid network bottlenecks and high-latency links, especially when the caller wants to send a large amount of data to multiple callees. In this paper, we present a mathematical model of serial multicast calls in order to understand their performance behavior. Through our evaluations on the real platform, we find our model is very effective in predicting the performance of serial multicast RPCs.</P>

A power amplifier operating at 3.3 V has been developed for CDMA/AMPS dual-mode cellular phones. It consists of linear GaAs power MESFET's, a new gate bias control circuit, and an output matching circuit which prevents the drain terminal of the second MESF from generating the harmonics. The relationship between the intermodulation distortion and the spectral regrowth of the power amplifier has been investigated with gate bias by using the two-tone test method and the adjacent channel leakage power ratio (ACPR) method of CDMA signals. The dissipation power of the power amplifier with a gate bias control circuit is minimized to below 1000 mW in the range of the low power levels while satisfying the ACPR of less than -26 dBc for CDMA mode. The ACPR of the power amplifier is measured to be -33 dBc at a high output power of 26 dBm.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This study achieves a better understanding how <I>Scenedesmus quadricauda</I> microalgae participate in the phycoremediation of a reverse osmosis (RO) concentrate at a high salinity (8000mgCl<SUP>−</SUP> L<SUP>−1</SUP>). Algal treatment of the RO concentrate under continuous illumination resulted in a notable increase in the biodegradability of dissolved organic matter, subsequent removal of biodegradable fractions, and simultaneous removal of nutrients (N and P). This is the first time that <I>S. quadricauda</I> is shown to induce the degradation of polymeric organic matter in the RO concentrate, which is typically refractory to microbial decomposition. In this study, the mechanisms for algae-induced degradation were investigated by measuring the hydrogen peroxide (H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>) released out of algal cells and dispersed in the aqueous phase. The algae-induced biodegradation process has an advantage over typical electrochemical oxidation technologies in that photo-sensitive living organisms are capable of self-repair, reproduction, and nutrient uptake. 농업용수는 우리나라 수자원 중 60%이상을 차지하는 아주 중요한 수자원이다. 농업용수의 효율적인 관리를 위해서 유역전반에 걸친 물수급 현황, 유역 내 각 시설물의 용수공급능력 분석, 유역 내 물부족 여부 및 추가용수개발 가능량 분석 등 용수이용의 효율성 제고를 위한 자료를 분석할 수 있는 시스템이 동반되어야 한다. 본 연구로 개발된 WBSIr은 유출모형의 매개변수 추정에 있어 다목적 유전자 알고리즘을 적용하여 최적화하고 실측 유출량의 확보가 가능한 경우 각 소유역마다 TANK 모형의 적용이 가능하다. WBSIr을 적용하여 유역의 관개용수 공급 네트워크를 고려하여 물수지를 분석한 결과, 기존의 방법에 비해 보다 효율적인 소유역별 용수배분이 가능하였으며 취입보, 양수장 등 용수공급 시설물의 연계분석으로 유역전체의 통합적인 관리가 가능하게 되었다. 기존의 물수지 방법을 적용한 경우와 비교하였으며, 용수공급량 등의 산정이 보다 신뢰도 높은 결과를 나타냄으로써 관개용수 공급 네트워크를 고려한 물수지 분석 수행이 타당함을 제시하였다. Agricultural water accounts for more than 60 percent of water resources in South Korea. The efficient management of agricultural water requires a system that analyzes the data to improve water efficiency, including water supply and demand throughout the watershed, water supply capacity of each facility in the watershed, water shortage in the watershed, and the possibility of developing additional water supplies. WBSIr, developed in this study, is optimized by applying a multi-purpose genetic algorithm in estimating parameters of the spill model, and the TANK model can be applied to each watershed if actual runoff is measured. Based on the WBSIr analysis of water balance considering an irrigation water supply network in the basin, it is possible to allocate water to each watershed more efficiently than the previous method. In comparison to the conventional water balance method, the water balance analysis considering the irrigation water supply network was found more reliable in the assessment of water supply.

<P>Acupuncture regulates inflammation process and growth factors by increasing blood circulation in affected areas. In this study, we examined whether acupuncture has an effect on wound healing in injured rat. Rats were assigned randomly into two groups: control group and acupuncture group. Acupuncture treatment was carried out at 8 sites around the wounded area. We analyzed the wound area, inflammatory cytokines, proliferation of resident cells, and angiogenesis and induction of extracelluar matrix remodeling. At 7 days after-wounding the wound size in acupuncture-treat group was decreased more significantly compared to control group. In addition, the protein levels of proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-<I><I>α</I></I> (TNF-<I><I>α</I></I>) and interleukin-1<I><I>β</I></I> (IL-1<I><I>β</I></I>) were significantly decreased compared to the control at 2 and 7 days post-wounding. Also, we analyzed newly generated cells by performing immunostaining for PCNA and using several phenotype markers such as CD-31, <I><I>α</I></I>-SMA, and collagen type I. In acupuncture-treated group, PCNA-positive cell was increased and PCNA labeled CD-31-positive vessels, <I><I>α</I></I>-SMA- and collagen type I-positive fibroblastic cells, were increased compared to the control group at 7 days post-wounding. These results suggest that acupuncture may improve wound healing through decreasing pro-inflammatory response, increasing cell proliferation and angiogenesis, and inducing extracellular matrix remodeling.</P>

LH-모멘트의 적정 차수 결정에 의한 설계홍수량 추정(II)

This study was conducted to estimate the design flood by the determination of best fitting order for LH-moments of the annual maximum series at fifteen watersheds. Using the LH-moment ratios and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, the optimal regional probability distribution was identified to be the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) in the first report of this project. Parameters of GEV distribution and flood flows of return period n years were derived by the methods of L, L1, L2, L3 and L4-moments. Frequency analysis of flood flow data generated by Monte Carlo simulation was performed by the methods of L, L1, L2, L3 and L4-moments using GEV distribution. Relative Root Mean Square Error. (RRMSE), Relative Bias (RBIAS) and Relative Efficiency (RE.) using methods of L, L1, L2, L3 and L4-moments for GEV distribution were computed and compared with those resulting from Monte Carlo simulation. At almost all of the watersheds, the more the order of LH-moments and the return periods increased, the more RE became, while the less RRMSE and RBIAS became. The Absolute Relative Reduction (ARR) for the design flood was computed. The more the order of LH-moments increased, the less ARR of all applied watershed became It was confirmed that confidence efficiency of estimated design flood was increased as the order of LH-moments increased. Consequently, design floods for the applied watersheds were derived by the methods of L3 and L4-moments among LH-moments in view of high confidence efficiency.
