      • Beste of bon and blod: Embodiment in Middle English Lyric

Moore, Sarah Kathryn University of Washington 2015 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2847

This dissertation argues that Middle English lyric is uniquely successful at connecting readers and hearers with our own bodies and with the bodies of medieval textual subjects. This effect occurs on the levels of content, form, and tone, although my emphasis is primarily on the formal components through which the connection is achieved, and my evidence is drawn largely from formal analysis of the songs. The methods through which the lyrics connect us with our bodies are sophisticated and include especially the carefully managed use of the linguistic category of deixis; nuanced, intentional portrayal and evocation of affect, or physically demonstrated emotion; and implicit and explicit reference (via form and content respectively) to the ways in which lyrics were literally embodied by medieval subjects through danced performance. I argue that Middle English lyrics construct and maintain the "I" of an uttering subject while also reinforcing an embodied sense of self in the text's reader or hearer. The corpus of surviving lyrics uniquely demonstrates how language, subjectivity, the body, and poetic form are related, speaking to the profound utility of verse (both in the medieval period and today) in constructing a sense of self and in relating to and empathizing with others.

      • Three essays and an untitled recording that realize the respective musical potential of heterotopia, phenomenology, and beauty as asunder

Chmura-Moore, Dylan Thomas The University of Wisconsin - Madison 2011 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2622

FITTINGinSIDE by Stefan Prins, I will not kiss your f.ing flag by Marco Stroppa, and MAP by Timothy McCormack are three contemporary musical works important to the future genre of contemporary classical art music, specifically with regard to the trombone. This dissertation details the significant contributions of these three musical works to contemporary art music, to understand their aesthetic aims, and to explore the philosophy behind their composition. Primary material for study is drawn from writings and interviews of the three composers studied, relevant historical criticism and musical analysis, and contemporary aesthetic and philosophic theory. Research is demonstrated by writing on and producing a compact disc recording of the three musical works. An essay titled "Deconstructing the Museum: Music, Prins, and Heterotopia" analyzes Prins' FITTINGinSIDE. This composition addresses the issue of how the concert hall, academia, and other similar modern museums often, consciously or not, encourage the distance felt between art and society. With this essay, I introduce the idea of heterotopia into musical discourse. Specifically, I speak on Michel Foucault's sixth principle of heterotopia. "Locating 'Deeper Human Reality': A Musical Phenomenology of Marco Stroppa's I will not kiss your f.ing flag" titles the second essay. What reality is and how we perceive reality is questioned in Stoppa's composition. His musical work unveils new possibilities of composition, electronic interaction in live performance, and acoustical reality in performance space. In this essay, I appropriate the philosophical study of phenomenology to supplement Stroppa's musical reevaluation of reality and our perception of it. The third essay, titled "Beauty, Nature, and McCormack. Musical Asunder" scrutinizes McCormack's MAP. At first glance, MAP is the prototype of New Complexity music, but the meticulous and exhaustive compositional method of MAP is employed to explore physical human actions. In the adversarial relationship between technique and human action, a performer realizes the beauty in MAP. MAP focuses on the microscopic, born from the body, and consequently born from nature. In this essay I theorize MAP as living wholly in beauty, born from the natural world. From Jean Baudrillard's theories, McCormack literally maps his own territory of what is beautiful. • Cognitive indices of physical self-perception: Relationships with physical activity

Moore, Justin Brian The University of Texas at Austin 2003 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2607

Self-esteem has been linked to numerous conditions such as depression, and along with physical self-worth, can be considered an important marker of psychological health. The first model proposed to explain the relationship between physical activity, physical self worth and self-esteem was the Exercise and Self-Esteem Model (EXSEM). The EXSEM has been supported in numerous studies despite the inability of the current measurement tools to test the complete model. The measurement conundrum was addressed Marsh (1994) with the development of the Physical Self-Descriptive Questionnaire (PSDQ). The PSDQ was designed to encompass more of the physical self previously ignored in other measurement tools. However, the PSDQ has been utilized exclusively in adolescents and requires validation in adult populations. To further address shortcomings of the EXSEM measurement model the Physical Self-Attribute Questionnaire was developed (Moore, Bartholomew, & Kilpatrick, In Review). Unfortunately, to date the PSAQ has not been utilized in a population homogeneous in regard to physical activity, nor has it been utilized with a proven measure of physical activity. Older adults have been shown to benefit greatly from physical activity, and vary greatly with regards to their physical activity levels. Regrettably, research involving older adults and the EXSEM is very limited. It is for this reason that this dissertation is being undertaken; to test the PSDQ in a population of older adults while testing the utility of the PSDQ as an addition to the EXSEM. For this purpose, 249 community dwelling older (60+) adults were recruited from a large community faith based organization. Participants completed the PSDQ, PSAQ, and a measure of self-reported physical activity, health history, and demographic information. The factor structure of the PSDQ was replicated in the study population and the sub-scales of the PSDQ demonstrated desirable internal reliability. Additionally, the PSDQ explained a significant amount of variance in self-reported physical activity. Furthermore, the PSAQ demonstrates considerable utility in explaining both unique variance in physical activity, and indirect effects through the sub-domains measured by the PSDQ. The current study supports the use of the PSDQ and the PSAQ in the measurement of the EXSEM. However, further research is needed utilizing larger samples before conclusions can be reached.

      • THE EFFECTS OF TWO INSTRUCTIONAL DELIVERY PROCESSES OF A DISTANCE TRAINING SYSTEM ON TRAINEE SATISFACTION, JOB PERFORMANCE AND RETENTION

MOORE, MARIA HRUBY THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY 1999 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2607

This exploratory, descriptive field case study compares the effects of two distinct instructional delivery processes embedded within a distance-training system (DTS) on trainee satisfaction, job performance and retention outcomes. The two instructional delivery processes vary on instructional design considerations including method, distance delivery technologies (media), and instructional techniques. Trainees' cognitive style and other learner characteristics were measured to determine differences between the two intact groups. In addition to the instructional delivery processes and trainees' attributes, other parts of the DTS include the trainer, manager involvement, and work environment. This study was conducted within an organizational setting that utilized a systems approach to training design. The theory of transactional distance (Moore, 1972; 1973; 1983) was applied to analyze the transformation of the initial instructional delivery process of the sales training program to a second instructional delivery process. The original sales training program's course structure and instructional techniques for dialog were changed when videoconferencing technology was introduced into the DTS. A second training delivery process resulted. Analysis of the findings suggest that there was no statistically significant difference in the dependent variables of trainee satisfaction, placements, or dollar billings when the two groups were compared based on participation in the two levels of the distance training delivery processes (DTDP). However, practical differences at the organizational level in the two groups were noted. Those trained by DTDP 1 (the self-instructional method with print, videotapes, and manger as trainer delivery approach) had a higher retention rate. However, those trained by DTDP 2 (the group method with print, videotapes, and corporate instructor via videoconferencing) had a higher average number of placements resulting in higher billing production. Multiple regression analysis indicates the independent variables describing the DTS (delivery process, trainer, work experience, sales experience, industry experience, years of education, GEFT score, sex, hours of interaction, manager involvement and work context) were able to explain approximately 20% of the variance in both trainee satisfaction and number of placements. Partial regression coefficients suggest that work experience and manager involvement were statistically significant in explaining trainee satisfaction. Partial regression coefficients suggest that sales experience, manager involvement, and work environment were also statistically significant in explaining the number of job placements. This study helps further the understanding of the influence a distance training system may have on trainee satisfaction, job behavior, and retention. This information is important to researchers and practitioners in the human resource development (HRD) field.

      • Minority middle school students' willingness to self-refer to school counselors for social and personal counseling

Moore-Thomas, Cheryl Jeanette University of Maryland College Park 2000 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2591

School counselors today are charged with providing guidance and counseling services for all students (American School Counselor Association, 1997; Dagley & Gazda, as cited in Cecil & Cobia, 1990). In light of the nation's quickly growing minority population, however, “all students” has a much broader, more inclusive meaning than it did a decade ago (Herring, 1997). With this national trend in mind, this study addressed questions regarding minority students' willingness to self-refer to school counselors for social and personal counseling. Expectations about Counseling (Tinsley, Workman, & Kass, 1980) and the Multi-Ethnic Identity Measure (Phinney, 1992) were administered to 330 middle school students. Both instruments were found to be reliable for the middle school student population, with Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficients of .97 and .82, respectively. Expectations about Counseling (Tinsley, Workman, & Kass, 1980), the Multi-Ethnic Identity Measure (Phinney, 1992), and a demographic questionnaire were administered to the 192 students in the sample who identified themselves as African American, Asian American, Hispanic American, Native American, or Biracial. Regression and correlation analyses showed that the expectancy variable, personal commitment, is predictive of minority students' willingness to self-refer; and that ethnic identity is minimally correlated with minority students' willingness to self-refer. These findings imply minority middle school students may have willingness to self-refer to school counselors for social and personal counseling. The findings also imply minority middle school students may respond differently to counseling expectations than do older adolescents and adults, and if substantiated by future research that is causal in nature, the need for specialized course work for middle school counselors.
