Maximal strength in the deep back squat correlates with sprinting performance over short distances

Sprinting is characterized by a transition from propulsion via knee extending musculature during initial acceleration towards ischiocrural musculature thereafter. This may lead to a decrease of correlation of the maximal strength in the back squat and sprinting performance with increasing distance. The aim of this investigation was to show the correlation between maximal dynamic force of the extensor chain of the lower limbs and short distance sprinting performance. Therefore, sprinting performance (0-5, 0-10, 0-15, 0-20, 0-25, 0-30m) and one repetition maximum (1RM) of 51 physical education students were determined. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated and show significant (p < 0.01) correlations for the relationships with the absolute 1RM (r = -0.661 to -0.792) and the relative 1RM (r = -0.648 to -0.739). However, a decrease in correlation over distance was not found. The results show that the maximal strength of lower extremities’ extensors is a basic requirement in short distance sprinting and should be considered in training.

The perovskite BaBiO₃ crystallizes in a cubic structure and undergoes structural transitions toward lower symmetry phases upon cooling. The two low-temperature monoclinic phases are insulating, and the origin of this unexpected non-metallic character has been under debate. Both monoclinic phases exhibit tilting and breathing distortions, which are connected with their insulating nature and may have important effects on phononic heat conductivity. Here, we report the first thermal conductivity measurement, κ(T), in pristine polycrystalline BaBiO₃ from 1.5 K to 310 K. At low and intermediate temperatures, we observe features reminiscent of a glass-like behavior, whereas at high-temperatures we find a downturn - typical of a crystalline solid. We compare our findings with available data of other recently investigated perovskite oxides displaying similar temperature dependence.

Gasoline Direct Injection technology is actually in the focus of intensive development activities, primarily due to the outstanding potential for fuel economy improvement. Direct injection enables a variety of fuel economy-oriented as well as emission-oriented Gasoline engine concepts based on various possible operation modes as homogeneous stoichiometric, homogeneous lean, lean and stratified near stoichiometric operation. Especially the mode of stratified stoichiometric or near stoichiometric operation represents a new approach for ultra low emission concepts.
Current development activities primarily are focused on extremely lean stratified operation. This target can be approached with a variety of combustion systems which can be tailored, at least to a certain extend, towards various base engine configurations. A key component for these combustion systems however, is the injection system with its spray characteristics.
Due to the variety of possible operation modes of a GDI engine, the engine management system and its control algorithms as well as an efficient and durable exhaust gas aftertreatment are playing a major role in meeting future emission legislation and driveability requirements.
