Allergic rhinitis is characterized by rhinorrhea, sneezing and nasal obstruction. Allergic rhinitis increases because of developments of diagnostic techniqhe, environmental change, especially industrialization. Recently people have studied on allergic rhinitis. We studied 107 allergic rhinitis patients with SBJ from June. 2002 to December, 2002. There was a significant effect of SBJ on allergic rhinitis. So, we suggested the clinical effect of SBJ on allergic rhinitis.

Studies have shown that both the psychomotor stimulant effects and rewarding properties of addictive drugs, including morphine, are sensitized by repeated drug administration and it is suggested that both of these effects are mediated by the same or closely overlapping dopamine systems. Specifically, the mesolimbic dopamine system has been implicated in the reinforcing and sensitizing properties of morphine. In oriental medicine, Shenmen (HT7) point on the heart channel has been used to treat mental and psychosomatic disorders. This study was designed to investigate the effect of acupuncture on acute and repeated morphine-induced changes in extracellular dopamine levels using in vivo microdialysis and morphine-induced behavioral changes. In the morphine sensitization experiment, male Sprague-Dawley rats were treated twice a day for three days with increasing doses of morphine (10, 20 and 40 mg/kg, s.c.) or with saline. After 15 days of withdrawal, rats were challenged with morphine hydrochloride (5 mg/kg, s.c.). Acupuncture was applied at bilateral Shenmen (HT7) points for 1 min after the morphine challenge. In the acute experiment, rats also received acupuncture for 1 min after an injection of morphine hydrochloride (5 mg/kg, s.c.). Results showed that acupuncture at the specific acupoint HT7, but not at control points (tail) significantly decreased both dopamine release and behavior induced by a systemic morphine challenge or a single sc morphine injection in the acute animals. These results suggest that reduction in sensitization may be one mechanism whereby acupuncture alleviates morphine craving in addicts.
Antinociception of heterotopic electro-acupuncture mediated by the dorsolateral funiculus.

We investigated the inhibitory pathways that mediate the antinociceptive effects of heterotopic electro-acupuncture (EA) on formalin injection-induced pain in rats. EA (2 ms, 10 Hz, 3 mA) was delivered to heterotopic acupoints HT(7) and PC(7) for 30 min; this was followed immediately by subcutaneous injection of formalin into the left hind paw of rats. Naltrexone (10 mg/kg, i.p.), an opioid receptor antagonist, was administered to evaluate the involvement of endogenous opioids. The dorsolateral funiculus (DLF), which is a descending pathway that inhibits pain, was transected at the ipsilateral T10-11 level of the thoracic spinal cord. EA inhibited behavioral responses to formalin injection-induced pain and prevented the pain-induced increase in cFos expression in the lumbar spinal cord. Pretreatment with naltrexone did not inhibit the antinociceptive effects of EA on formalin injection-induced pain. Transection of the DLF ipsilateral to the acupuncture site eliminated the antinociceptive effects of EA. These results suggest that the antinociceptive effects of heterotopic EA are mediated by the DLF and not by endogenous opioids.

Objective: Dopamine activity in thenucleus accumbens is an important neuropharmacological component of morphine reinforcement. In this nucleus a shell and core have been distinguished on the basis of anatomical and neurochemical criteria. Although acupuncture has been standard intervention in many detoxication programs worldwide, the central mechanism by which morphine acts to reinforce behavior remain elusive. The present in vivo microdialysis study was conducted, in freely moving rats, to detect the effects of acupuncture on extracellular dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats received acupuncture for 1 min after injection of morphine hydrochloride (5mg/kg, s.c.). The employed acupuncture needle points corresponded to bilateral Neiguan(PC6) on the pericardium channel, which has been used to treat mental and psychosomatic disorders. Extracellular dopamine and its metabolites were measured every 20 mins for 3 hrs following the subcutaneous morphine injection. Results: Results showed that acupuncture at PC6 significantly attenuated increases in dopamine levels induced by a single acute morphine injection in the nucleus accumbens shell and core, respectively. Conclusions: These results provided strong evidence for acupuncture-mediated reduction in morphine-induced dopamine release in the rat nucleus accumbens.

Objectives : The Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam has been used in traditional oriental medicine to treat a variety of mental disorders including anxiety and depression. The purpose of present study is to observe the changes which take place in the body in stressful situations and to compare the anti-depressive, anxiolytic and anti-stress effect of Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam in different doses. Methods : This study was performed to evaluate the effects of Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam in the immobilization stress model in rats. Twenty-five rats were divided into 5 groups of 5: control, stress, low dose administration (75 mg/kg), medium dose administration (150 mg/kg) and high dose administration (225 mg/kg). The four groups other than the control group were placed in an immobilization stress test, and distilled water (control) or Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam extract was administration orally for 2 weeks. After treatment, the despair and anxiety behavior of rats were measured by open field test, forced swimming test, weight gain, contents of 5-HT in raphe nucleus and adrenal gland weight. Results & Conclusions : As a result of evaluation by measuring five aspects, FST, OFT, weight gain, 5-HT contents and adrenal gland weight, Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam has significant antidepressant, anxiolytic, anti-stress effects.
