      • Development and utilization of hybrid rice in China

        China now has about 69% advantage of the rice yield as compared with the global average. The planting area was 30 million ha and total yield was 180 million ton in China in every year. Now, the breeding strategy of hybrid rice includes the improving ratio of plant morphological and raising heterosis level and using tools of the molecular biology. Some research was fixed on main index of plant type of hybrid Rice, which had the tall erect-leaf canopy and lower panicle position and bigger panicle size. Methods of raising heterosis level were expressed including exploitation and utilization of various male sterility resources, development of male sterile lines with high grain quality and out-crossing capacity, using wide-compatibility (WC) gene to overcome seed-set problem.

        Compound K Suppresses Ultraviolet Radiation-induced Apoptosis by Inducing DNA Repair in Human Keratinocytes

        Ultraviolet (UV)-induced DNA damage is a crucial molecular trigger for sunburn cell formation and skin cancer. Nucleotide excision repair (NER) is the main mechanism in repairing UVB-induced DNA damage of mammalian cells. The purpose of this study is to investigate the functional role of ginsenoside compound K on HaCaT cells (a keratinocyte-derived permanent cell line) irradiated by UV. Hoechst 33258 staining were performed in analyzing UV-induced apoptosis on keratinocytes which were treated with compound K. ImmunoDotBlot assay was used in detecting cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers, the main DNA damage. Western blot analysis was applied for analyzing XPC and ERCC1, two of the NER proteins. Compound K inhibited UV-induced apoptosis of keratinocytes and caused a notable reduction in UV-specific DNA lesions which was due to induction of DNA repair. In agreement with this, compound K induced the expression of particular components of the NER complex, such as XPC and ERCC1. Our results demonstrate that compound K can protect cells from apoptosis induced by UV radiation by inducing DNA repair.

      • Die Rezeption und Entwicklung der Geisteswissenschaftlichen Pädagogik in Taiwan

        The main purpose of this study was to inquire into historical development and current status of German humanistic educational science in Taiwan. The adoption of GHES/ German cultural educational study before 1949 in mainland China, which later passed down in Taiwan, was mainly influenced by relevant researches in Japan. Then, as a result of the efforts of Tién Péi-Lín, Wáng Wén-Jùne, Chèng Chùng-Hsìn and Jān Dòng-Liáng, German cultural educational study, particularly from Eduard Spranger, was further adopted in Taiwan at least until the 1980s. This study found, firstly, that Bollnow’s existential philosophy appeared to be rarely incorporated into the context of GHES in the Taiwanese research literature. Secondly, to consider a connection between the Neo-Confucianism and modern educational philosophy could be regarded as a task left behind by the previous Chinese also Taiwanese GHES researchers. Thirdly, this paper pointed out that ideological educational theories had a negative impact by means of exclusion or downplaying on the development of the research of educational philosophy in the Chinese-speaking world around World War II. Finally, the Author claimed that GHES is nowadays still able to prove itself valuable for the reconstruction of educational history and the future of the research of educational philosophy in Taiwan.

        Die Rezeption und Entwicklung der Geisteswissenschaftlichen Pädagogik in Taiwan

        Der Hauptzweck der Studie war, die historische Entwicklung und den aktuellen Zustand der Geisteswissenschaftlichen Pädagogik in Taiwan zu erforschen. Die Rezeption der GP/ Kulturpädagogik vor 1949 im Festland China, was später in Taiwan weitergegeben wurde, ließ sich hauptsächlich von relevanten Forschungsergebnissen in Japan beeinflussen. Dann wurde die Kulturpädagogik bzw. Sprangers Lehre infolge der Anstrengungen von Tién Péi-Lín, Wáng Wén-Jùne, Chèng Chùng-Hsìn und Jān Dòng-Liáng mindestens bis in die 1980er Jahre in Taiwan weiterführend rezipiert. Die Studie fand erstens heraus, dass Bollnows Existenzphilosophie selten in den Kontext der geisteswissenschaftlich-pädagogischen Forschung in Taiwan eingebracht wurde. Zweitens, ob oder was für eine Verbindung zwischen dem Neokonfuzianismus und der allgemeinpädagogischen Forschung gefunden werden kann, galt als eine unerledigte Aufgabe, die die chinesischen und taiwanischen Vorläufer der geisteswissenschaftlichen Pädagogik hinterließen. Drittens, dieser Beitrag wies darauf hin, dass politisch-ideologische Pädagogiken durch entweder das Verdrängen oder das Herunterspielen vor und während des Zweiten Weltkriegs im chinesischsprachigen Raum einen negativen Einfluss auf die Entwicklung der allgemeinpädagogischen Forschung hatte. Schließlich behauptete der Autor, dass die Geisteswissenschaftliche Pädagogik wertvoll und zwar noch in der Lage wäre, den Wiederaufbau der Geschichte der Pädagogik sowie die allgemeinpädagogische Forschung in Taiwan beizutragen.

        Facile Fabrication of Extremely Small CoNi/C Core/Shell Nanoparticles for Efficient Microwave Absorber

        CoNi magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) and hybrid architectures have attracted tremendous attention from numerous applications. In this study, a facile approach based on one-step metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) was developed to fabricate CoNi/C core/shell NPs with an extremely small core size of ~3.7 nm and an ultrathin shell thickness of 1–3 nm. Only 10 wt.% CoNi/C core/shell NP-filled composites with thickness of 1.6 mm exhibit an optimal reflection loss value of -25.7 dB and an absorbing bandwidth value up to 6.2 GHz. The extremely small core/shell NPs are demonstrated to have enhanced electromagnetic parameters (i.e., complex permittivity and permeability), reflection loss and broadened effective absorption bandwidth, as compared to the relatively larger NPs. The superior microwave absorbing performance should be attributed to the increased specific area with enriched interfacial polarization. The as-synthesized extremely small CoNi/C core/shell NPs are expected to be a fascinating candidate for efficient microwave absorption material with lightweight and thin thickness.

        Different Dimensional and Structural Variations in Coordination Compounds of Cadmium, Manganese and Nickel Constructed from the Ligand 2,2'-Bipyidine-3,3',6,6'-tetracarboxylic Acid (H<sub>4</sub>bptc)

        The reactions of hydrated $CdCl_2$, $MnCl_2$, and $NiCl_2$ with 2,2'-bipyidine-3,3',6,6'-tetracarboxylic acid ($H_4bptc$) afforded the mononuclear [$Cd^{II}(H_2bptc)(H_2O)_3]{\cdot}H_2O$ (1), linear $\{[Cd(H_2bptc)(H_2O)]{\cdot}3H_2O\}_n$ (2), 3-D heterobimetallic $[NaCd(Hbptc)(H_2O)]$ (3), layer $[Mn(H_2bptc)(H_2O)]_n$ (4) and a dinuclear compound $[Ni_2(H_2bptc)-(H_2O)_2]{\cdot}6H_2O$ (5). These compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and their structures have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The thermal stabilities of 1-3 were measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and their solid state luminescence properties together with the free ligand $H_4bptc$ were investigated at room temperature.

      • Anti-metastasis Activity of Black Rice Anthocyanins Against Breast Cancer: Analyses Using an ErbB2 Positive Breast Cancer Cell Line and Tumoral Xenograft Model

        Background: Increasing evidence from animal, epidemiological and clinical investigations suggest that dietary anthocyanins have potential to prevent chronic diseases, including cancers. It is also noteworthy that human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (ErbB2) protein overexpression or ErbB2 gene amplification has been included as an indicator for metastasis and higher risk of recurrence for breast cancer. Materials and Methods: The present experiments investigated the anti-metastasis effects of black rice anthocyanins (BRACs) on ErbB2 positive breast cancer cells in vivo and in vitro. Results: Oral administration of BRACs (150 mg/kg/day) reduced transplanted tumor growth, inhibited pulmonary metastasis, and decreased lung tumor nodules in BALB/c nude mice bearing ErbB2 positive breast cancer cell MDA-MB-453 xenografts. The capacity for migration, adhesion, motility and invasion was also inhibited by BRACs in MDA-MB-453 cells in a concentration dependent manner, accompanied by decreased activity of a transfer promoting factor, urokinase-type plasminogen activator (u-PA). Conclusions: Together, our results indicated that BRACs possess anti-metastasis potential against ErbB2 positive human breast cancer cells in vivo and in vitro through inhibition of metastasis promoting molecules.

        Effects of the costoclavicular block versus interscalene block in patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery under monitored anesthesia care: a randomized, prospective, non-inferiority study

        Background: Recent studies have reported that costoclavicular blocks (CCBs) can consistently block almost all branches of the brachial plexus while sparing the phrenic nerve and provide effective analgesia after shoulder surgery. We aimed to compare the efficacy of the CCB with that of the interscalene block (ISB) as the sole blocking technique for shoulder surgery.Methods: A total of 212 patients undergoing elective arthroscopic shoulder surgery were randomized to receive an ISB or CCB based on a non-inferiority design. All patients received titration sedation with propofol under monitored anesthesia during surgery. The primary outcomes were the proportion of patients with complete motor blockade of the suprascapular nerve (SSN) and incidence of hemidiaphragmatic paralysis (HDP). The secondary outcomes included block-related variables, complications, and postoperative pain scores. Results: The proportion of patients with complete motor blockade of the SSN at 20 min between the CCB and ISB groups (53% vs. 66%) exceeded the predefined non-inferiority margin of −5%, but was comparable at 30 min (87% vs. 91%). The CCB resulted in a significantly lower incidence of HDP (7.55% vs. 92.45%), Horner’s syndrome (0% vs. 18.87%), and dyspnea (0% vs. 10.38%) than the ISB. None of the patients experienced failed blocks or required conversion to general anesthesia. Pain scores were comparable between the groups.Conclusions: Ultrasound-guided CCBs may be comparable to ISBs, with fewer unfavorable complications in patients with impaired lung function undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery.

        Influence of the STI Sidewall Angle on the Induced Channel Stress in Nanoscaled PMOSFETs

        The effect of the shallow trench isolation (STI) sidewall angle (α) on the induced channel stress and the device performance of nanoscale (32 nm, 45 nm, 90 nm gate length) p-type metal-oxidesemiconductor field-effect transistors (PMOSFETs) has been studied by using simulations. Simulation results show that STI sidewall angle improves both the channel current Id and the transconductance gm, and it does not degrade on/off current ratio Ion/Ioff. The result is helpful to gain insight into the physical mechanisms of and to further improve sub-100 nm device performance based on STI process optimization.
