A microorganism showing degradative activity towards benzene, toluene and ${\rho}-xylene$ (BTX) was isolated from an activated sewage sludge and was tentatively identified as Pseudomonas fluorescence BE103. This strain was found to utilize benzene and toluene as growth substrates, but to degrade ${\rho}-xylene$ in the obligate presence of a growth substrate. The metabolic product resulted from the cometabolism of ${\rho}-xylene$ was identified as 3, 6-dimethylpyrocatechol by LC/MS analysis, and the metabolic pathway was analyzed to be similar to the tod pathway. From the kinetic studies done regarding BTX biodegradation using Pseudomonas fluorescence BE103, it was revealed that the cometabolism of ${\rho}-xylene$ is significantly affected by the ratio of growth substrate concentration to biomass concentration, and that the cometabolism of ${\rho}-xylene$ initiates only when this ratio was about 0.03.

Sang Kun Park,Jin Hee Lim,Mi Seon Kim,Hyang Young Joung,Hak Ki Shin,Hae Ryong Cho,Hye Kyung Rhee 한국육종학회 2009 한국육종학회지 Vol.41 No.4
A new gerbera variety "Pink Swan" was released by the National Horticultural Research Institute (NHRI) in 2007. A cross was made between "Royal" with orange and single and 'Himalaya' with white and semi-double in 2004. After investigation of the characteristics for 4 years (from 2004 to 2007), it was selected specially for the use of cut-flower. "Pink Swan" is a vigorous medium-sized cultivar with pink (RHS R48D), yellow green center and semi-double. The average flower diameter is 10.6 cm. And inner ray floret and disc diameter is 5.99cm and 1.83cm, respectively. It produces a large yield with continuous supply of flowers and has adequate peduncle height. We believe that "Pink Swan" has a great potential for expanding cultivated area of domestic gerbera cultivar and increasing farmers-income.
Predictors of Suicidal Ideation in People with Epilepsy Living in Korea
Lim, Hye-Won,Song, Hyun-Seok,Hwang, Yang-Ha,Lee, Ho-Won,Suh, Chung-Kyu,Park, Sung-Pa,Kwon, Soon-Hak Korean Neurological Association 2010 Journal of Clinical Neurology Vol.6 No.2

Background and Purpose

The risk of suicide or suicide attempts is reported higher in people with epilepsy (PWE) than in the general population. Although epileptic, psychiatric, and psychosocial factors are known risk factors for suicide or suicide attempt, no studies have evaluated the predictors of the severity of suicidal ideation-which is a warning sign for suicide attempts-in PWE. Therefore, we measured the severity of suicidal ideation and its risk factors.

Methods

Consecutive PWE who were medicated with antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and attended epilepsy clinic were included in the study. The subjects completed self-reported questionnaires, which included the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), and Scale for Suicide Ideation-Beck (SSI-Beck). We compared the patients' demographic and clinical variables, and BDI, BAI, and SCL-90-R scores with their SSI-Beck score, and used our findings to determine the predictors for suicidal ideation.

Results

In total, 257 PWE were enrolled in the study. SSI-Beck scores correlated strongly with several seizure-related variables, duration of education, IQ, BDI and BAI scores, and nine domains of the SCL-90-R questionnaire. However, the strongest predictor for suicidal ideation was BDI score (β=0.41, p<0.001), followed by several SCL-90-R domains, such as obsessive-compulsive (β=-0.39, p<0.001), depression (β=0.38, p<0.001), hostility (β=0.22, p=0.002), paranoid ideation (β=0.17, p=0.01), and IQ (β=-0.10, p=0.017). These variables explained 59% of the variance in the SSI-Beck score. The seizure-related variables that influenced the BDI score were seizure frequency, duration of education, MRI abnormality, and number of AEDs. However, these variables explained only 18% of the variance in the BDI score.

Conclusions

Major risk factors for suicidal ideation in PWE were depressive and psychiatric symptoms rather than seizure-related variables. Therefore, clinicians should focus on screening for depression and other psychiatric problems and treat them appropriately in order to reduce suicidal behavior in PWE. Since seizure-related variables also exhibited a minor role in determining depressive symptoms, stronger seizure-related risk factors for depression should be sought, such as seizure severity or psychosocial factors, to minimize suicidal behavior.

For developing molecular markers linked to white rust resistance in chrysanthemum, RAPD and AFLP were carried out in ‘Puma White’ x ‘Dancer’ mapping population through Bulked Segregant Analysis (BSA) methods. 10 resistant and 10 susceptible individuals were selected and bulked. And then, these bulks were screened using 280 RAPD primers (10 mer) with two parents. As a result of BSA-RAPD, 25 Dancer/R-bulk specific bands in 21 primers and 22 Puma White/S-bulk specific bands in 18 primers were selected. These resistant or susceptible specific bands were screened in 10 resistant and 10 susceptible individuals. Except OPI-13520, all bands were confirmed as false positive. OPI-13520 band presumed as closely linked marker to white rust disease resistance was tested in whole population. Among 187 progenies, just six off-springs did not correspond with phenotypic data. Based on expected phenotypic segregation ratios in the pseudo F1 progenies, it was assumed that a duplex type of white rust resistance in ‘Dancer’ (RRrrrr) were in combination with a duplex type of OPI-13520 marker. As a result of x2-test of independence between resistance gene and OPI-13520 marker, x2 score is 76.08 and probability is 2.13x10-16. And resistance gene and OPI-13520 marker were assumed to be linked in coupling phase. The value of recombination fraction obtained by successive trials and second derivative of log likelihood was 0.03832±0.0271.

We performed a survey for flavivirus infection and distribution of Aedes albopictus that known as Zika and Dengue virus vector using black–light trap and BG-sentinel trap around urban area in Korea. Mosquitoes were collected in 27 cities during March to November (twice a month) year 2016. Total numbers of mosquitoes collected 102,102 including 19 species 8 genera during collecting period. Total 21,467 Ae. albopictus was collected that 20,961(24.3%) by BG-sentinel trap and 506 (3.2%) by Black-light trap in urban area. Trap index(trap/night) of Ae. albopictus was showed highest in Hamyang (TI:992.3) and lowest in Taebaek (TI:0.3) there was only collected by Black-light trap. A total of 894 pools from all collecting Ae. albopictus were performed a Flavivirus detection. Flavivirus was not detected during study period. This study may provide basic information for surveillance of imported diseases (include Zika virus) and vectors in Korea.
Molecular Cloning and Characterization of ARS Elements from the Mud Loach (Misgurnus mizolepis)
Hak-Seob Lim,Moo-Sang Kim,Jin-Young Park,Kang-Eun Choi,Jee-Youn Hwang,DongSoo Kim 한국분자세포생물학회 2002 Molecules and cells Vol.13 No.2
Autonomously replicating sequences (ARSs) are thought to occur within, or adjacent to, the matrix attachment regions (MARs). To identify fish ARSs, MARs of the mud loach fish were obtained from nuclear matrices using a modified LIS method. These DNA fragments were screened for their ability to act as ARSs by being cloned into the ARS cloning vector, pURY19, and transformed into Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Sixteen ARSs were isolated, most of which were more efficient in transformation than the positive control vector, pURY19-2 μm, which contained the 2 μm circle origin of yeast. In particular, one clone, pURY19- ARS223, was 18 times more efficient in back-transforming E. coli than the positive control vector. Therefore, ARS223, which has strong ARS activity in yeast, could be a good candidate for inclusion in expression vehicles that are used to transfect fish cell lines or embryos. A DNA sequence analysis showed that the essential ARS elements contain potential ARS consensus sequences, and are predicted to have hairpin loop structures, or curved or kinked DNA. In addition, the MAR-Finder program suggested that ARSs also contain MAR motifs. These include AT tracts, ORI patterns, kinked DNA, ATC tracts, and Topoisomerase II consensus sequences. The in vitro matrix binding assay confirmed that all of the cloned ARSs could associate with the nuclear matrix. This indicates that ARSs elements may be located in or near the MARs. This is the first study that has identified and characterized ARSs in fish.
