        Physiological Changes with Age by the Chronic Administration of Korean Red Ginseng in Spraque-Dawley Rats

        The present study was designed to elucidate the physiological changes with age by chronic administration of red ginseng. All rats were reared in the conventional system. Ginseng treated rats were continously supplied with ginseng water extracts together water from 6 weeks of age to the age 24 months. Rats did not show any discernible signs or the rejection symptoms by red ginseng water extracts. A long-term administration of red ginseng extracts did not cause any physiological changes in the gain of body and organs weight, food intake and general properties of urine. However, red ginseng caused to decrease the level of serum cholesterol, glucose and TBARS, and it attenuated effectively the age-dependent decline of LDH activity. Other biochemical parameters measured from blood and general properties of urine were not significantly changed. These results suggest that long-term administration of red ginseng to rat does not cause any clear physiological changes in appearance and urine, and it retards age-related deteriorations in some biochemical parameters such as LDL-cholesterol, glucose and LDH in serum.

        P wave dispersion on 12-lead electrocardio- graphy in adolescents with neurocardiogenic syncope

        Purpose: Neurocardiogenic syncope (NCS) is the most frequent cause of fainting during adolescence. Inappropriate cardiovascular autonomic control may be responsible for this clinical event. The head-up tilt test has been considered a diagnostic standard, but it is cumbersome and has a high false-positive rate. We performed a study to evaluate whether P-wave dispersion (PWD) could be a useful electrocardiographic parameter of cardiac autonomic dysfunction in children with NCS. Methods: Fifty-four patients with NCS (28 boys and 26 girls; mean age, 12.3±1.4 years) and 55 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled. PWD was obtained as the difference between maxi- mum and minimum durations of the P wave on standard 12-lead electrocardiography in all patients and controls Results: The value of PWD was significantly higher in the syncope group than in the control group (69.7±19.6 msec vs. 45.5±17.1 msec, respectively; P<0.001). The minimum duration of P wave was shorter in the syncope group than in the control group (43.8±16.8 msec vs. 53.5±10.7 msec, respectively; P<0.001). Left atrial volume was not different between the groups on transthoracic echocardiography. Conclusion: PWD on echocardiography could be used as a clinical parameter in patients with NCS.

        <P>An endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium was isolated from the rhizosphere of willow roots in Korea. The bacterium, designated strain BR030T, was a strictly aerobic, motile rod. The cell wall contained type A1gamma peptidoglycan with meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C(15 : 0), iso-C(15 : 0), iso-C(14 : 0) and iso-C(16 : 0). The major cellular phospholipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and unknown phospholipids (PL1, PL2). The genomic DNA G+C content was 36 mol%. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses showed that strain BR030T formed a distinct phyletic line within the genus Bacillus and was most closely related to Bacillus flexus DSM 1320T, with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 96.8 %. Sequence similarities to other type strains were lower than 96.2 %. On the basis of physiological and molecular properties, the isolate represents a novel species within the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus koreensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BR030T (= KCTC 3914T = DSM 16467T).</P>

        Methanol Barriers Derived from Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Poly(ethersulfone)s for High Performance Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

        Layer-by-layer assembled multilayers of poly(ethersulfone)s were deposited on the surface of Nafion membrane for the application of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC). Aminated poly(ethersulfone) (APES) and sulfonated poly(ethersulfone) (SPES) were used as a polycation and a polyanion for fabrication of the multilayer films. UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy verified a linear build-up of the multilayers of APES and SPES on the surface of Nafion. Thin multilayer films deposited on the Nafion membrane enabled methanol permeability of the membrane to decrease by 78% in comparison with the pristine Nafion. The performance of DMFCs in concentrated methanol was highly enhanced by using the multilayer modified Nafion.

        Influence of Naloxone on Catecholamine Release Evoked by Nicotinic Receptor Stimulation in the Isolated Rat Adrenal Gland

        The present study was designed to investigate the effect of naloxone, a well known opioid antagonist, on the secretion of catecholamines (CA) evoked by cholinergic stimulation and membrane-depolarization in the isolated perfused rat adrenal glands, and to establish its mechanism of action. Naloxone (10-6~10-5 M), perfused into an adrenal vein for 60 min, produced dose- and time-dependent inhibition of CA secretory responses evoked by ACh (5.32×10-3 M), high K+ (5.6×10-2 M), DMPP (10-4 M) and McN-A-343 (10-4 M). Naloxone itself also failed to affect the basal CA output. In adrenal glands loaded with naloxone (3×10-6 M), the CA secretory responses evoked by Bay-K-8644, an activator of L-type Ca2+ channels, and cyclopiazonic acid, an inhibitor of cytoplasmic Ca2+-ATPase, were also inhibited. In the presence of met-enkephalin (5×10-6 M), a well known opioid agonist, the CA secretory responses evoked by ACh, high K+, DMPP, McN-A-343, Bay-K-8644 and cyclopiazonic acid were also significantly inhibited. Taken together, these results suggest that naloxone greatly inhibits the CA secretion evoked by stimulation of cholinergic (both nicotinic and muscarinic) receptors as well as that by membrane depolarization. It seems that these inhibitory effects of naloxone does not involve opioid receptors, but might be mediated by blocking both the calcium influx into the rat adrenal medullary chromaffin cells and the uptake of Ca2+ into the cytoplasmic calcium store, which are at least partly relevant to the direct interaction with the nicotinic receptor itself.

      • 아시아, 유럽 주식시장 간 동태적 상관관계와 정보이전효과

        본 연구는 2010년 유럽재정위기 이후 높아지는 유럽 주식시장에 대한 관심을 반영하여 유럽 3개국과 아시아 3개국 그리고 미국까지 7개국 주식시장을 대상으로 가격, 변동성 이전효과를 국가별 시차에 의한 폐장시각 차이를 고려하여 분석하였고, 개별시장 간 동태적 상관계수변화를 관찰하며, 전체시장의 종합적인 변동성과 상관성을 측정하였다. 분석결과 다음과 같은 점이 발견되었다. 첫째, 가격, 변동성 이전효과 분석결과 시차를 고려하지 않은 모형과 시차를 고려한 모형의 결과에 뚜렷한 차이가 존재하며 이러한 차이의 원인은 시차비고려모형에 선 가장 늦게 열리는 미국시장의 영향력이 모든 시장에 대해 과대평가될 여지가 있고, 시차고려모형에선 바로 전 폐장했던 지역시장의 영향력이 그 다음 열리는 시장에 과대평가될 여지가 있기 때문이다. 둘째, 시간가변조건부상관계수는 2008년 9월의 리먼브라더스 파산시점과 2011년 후반의 유럽재정위기 시점에 정점을 기록하고 이후 감소하여 2013년 2월 현재 다시 금융위기 이전수준으로 상관계수가 감소하려는 추세가 나타나 경제위기에 의해 높아진 상관계수가 계속 유지되지는 않고 위기 이전수준으로 돌아가려는 경향이 있기 때문에 분산투자의 위험분산효과는 다시 상승하여 여전히 국제자본시장을 대상으로 한 포트폴리오 구성은 유효한 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 일반화분산(GVAR)와 집합상관성(CCOR)을 이용한 방법론은 전체시장의 변동성과 상관관계를 한 개의 숫자(스칼라)로 나타내며 이를 이용한 분석결과 조건부상 관계수의 분석결과와 같은 결론이 나왔기 때문에 일반화분산과 집합상관성을 이용한 방법론이 전체시장의 변동성과 상관계수의 윤곽을 한눈에 파악하는데 유용한 방법이 될 수 있음을 확인하였다. This study investigates the price and volatility spillover effects and conditional correlation of Asia(Japan, Korea, China), Europe(U.K, Germany, France) and the U.S. stock markets using the VAR and M-GARCH model considering the time lag between the stock markets. In addition, we analyzed the dynamics of correlation across stock markets and estimated the overall market volatility and correlation. The findings of this study are as follows: First, the results of price and volatility spillover effects from the model that considers the time difference are significantly different from the results of the model that does not consider the time difference. The reason for the difference in results is that the influence of U.S. stock market to the global stock markets is overestimated in the analysis without considering the time difference since the U.S. stock market opens late among the global stock markets. It indicates that, with the model considering the time difference, there is a possibility of an influence of a particular stock market to the next opening stock market to be overestimated. Second, the time varying correlation is declining after the crisis. As a result, it seemed that portfolio diversification effect to be still effective. Third, the results from GVAR and CCOR confirm the results from the conditional correlation, meaning that such methodology is useful to analyze the overall market volatility and correlation.

        Influence of Bradykinin on Catecholamine Release from the Rat Adrenal Medulla

        The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of bradykinin on secretion of catecholamines (CA) evoked by stimulation of cholinergic receptors and membrane depolarization from the isolated perfused model of the rat adrenal glands, and to elucidate its mechanism of action. Bradykinin $(3{\times}10^{-8}M)$ alone produced a weak secretory response of the CA. however, the perfusion with bradykinin $(3{\times}10^{-8}M)$ into an adrenal vein of the rat adrenal gland for 90 min enhanced markedly the secretory responses of CA evoked by ACh $(5.32{\times}10^{-3}M)$, excess $K^+$ ($5.6{\times}10^{-2}M$, a membrane depolarizer), DMPP ($10^{-4}$ M, a selective neuronal nicotinic agonist) and McN-A-343 ($10^{-4}$ M, a selective M1-muscarinic agonist). Moreover, bradykinin ($3{\times}10^{-8}$ M) in to an adrenal vein for 90 min also augmented the CA release evoked by BAY-K-8644, an activator of the dihydropyridine L-type $Ca^{2+}$ channels. However, in the presence of $(N-Methyl-D-Phe^7)$-bradykinin trifluoroacetate salt $(3{\times}10^{-8}M)$, an antagonist of $BK_2$-bradykinin receptor, bradykinin no longer enhanced the CA secretion evoked by Ach and high potassium whereas the pretreatment with Lys-$(des-Arg^9,\;Leu^9)$-bradykinin trifluoroacetate salt $(3{\times}10^{-8}M)$, an antagonist of $BK_1$-bradykinin receptor did fail to affect them. Furthermore, the perfusion with bradykinin $(3{\times}10^{-6}M)$ into an adrenal vein of the rabbit adrenal gland for 90 min enhanced markedly the secretory responses of CA evoked by excess $K^+$ $(5.6{\times}10^{-2}M)$. Collectively, these experimental results suggest that bradykinin enhances the CA secretion from the rat adrenal medulla evoked by cholinergic stimulation (both nicotininc and muscarinic receptors) and membrane depolarization through the activation of $B_2$-bradykinin receptors, not through $B_1$-bradykinin receptors. This facilitatory effect of bradykinin seems to be associated to the increased $Ca^{2+}$ influx through the activation of the dihydropyridine L-type $Ca^{2+}$ channels.
