        Vacuum Packaging Technology of AC-PDP using Direct-Joint Method

        We suggested new PDP packaging technology using the direct joint method, which does not need an exhausting hole and tube. The advantages of this method are simple process, short process time and time panel package. To packaging, we drew the seal line of glass frit by dispenser followed by forming the lump, which provide pumping-out path during the packaging process. And, we have performed a pretreatment of glass frit to reduce the out-gases. After which, both front and rear glass plates were aligned and loaded into vacuum packaging chamber. The 4-inch monochrome AC-PDP was successfully packaged and fully emitted with brightness of 1000 $cd/m^2$. Also, glass frit properties for pretreatment condition was investigated by AES and SEM analyses.

      • Pre-validation study of alternative developmental toxicity test using mouse embryonic stem cell-derived embryoid bodies

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The embryoid body test (EBT) is a developmental toxicity test method that assesses the half inhibitory concentrations of substances in the area of embryoid bodies (EBs), and in the viability of mouse embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and fibroblasts (3T3 cells) following chemical exposure for three and four days, respectively. In the previous study, the EBT showed more advanced than the embryonic stem cell test (EST) from the European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM) applying cardiac differentiation of mouse ESCs, because the EBT greatly reduced the exposure time, labor, and amount of materials required, and misclassification of embryotoxic potential. This pre-validation study evaluated the predictive accuracy of the EBT using 26 coded test substances by two steps: intra-laboratory and inter-laboratory reproducibility tests. Since some substances have different embryotoxic potentials at different pregnancy periods, in this study, a new prediction model consisting of non-toxic and toxic classes was used, instead of the existing prediction model assessing embryotoxicants in four classes. The results of the intra- and inter-laboratory tests were highly accurate (above 80%) when substances were classified using the predictive model. In conclusion, EBT can accurately classify various embryotoxicants in a short time with less effort and greater validation.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The experiment was conducted to verify the embryo body test (EBT) method. </LI> <LI> Predictive models were created for two classifications (non-toxic and toxic). </LI> <LI> Experimental results showed high accuracy (above 80%). </LI> <LI> EBT can be used to classify embryotoxicants in the short term. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Symptomatic Hyponatremia after Using Low-dose Combination Diuretics in Elderly Woman:

        Hyponatremia, defined as a serum sodium concentration below 135 mEq/L (or 135 mMol/L), is the most common electrolyte imbalance in adults. Diuretics are one of common causes of hyponatremia, and thiazide diuretic is associated with virtually all cases of diuretic-induced hyponatremia. Typically, thiazide-induced hyponatremia occurs in high-dose, more than 25 mg per day. But in high risk group, such as elderly female with low body weight, low-dose thiazide can cause hyponatremia. Furthermore, risk of hyponatremia can be increased when using more than two different diuretics simultaneously. Also, mild hyponatremia, around 125 mEq/L, is usually asymptomatic, but it can cause significant symptoms in elderly. The authors report a case of symptomatic hyponatremia after using low-dose combination diuretic, hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg with spironolactone 12.5 mg, in an elderly woman, with review of several literatures.

      • Development of Expressed Sequence Tags(ESTs) from Korean Native Chicken cDNA Libraries

        한국 재래 닭의 유전적 특성 규명 및 기능 유전체 연구의 기초재료를 확보하고자 대량 EST 염기서열 결정 및 생물정보학 분석을 실시하였다. 대량 EST 염기서열 분석을 위한 첫 번째 단계로 재래 닭의 뇌, 비장, 정소, 배아 생식기를 이용하여 cDNA library를 구축하였다. 각각의 library로부터 총 15,121개의 클론을 선정하여 염기서열을 결정하였다. 생물정보학 분석결과 15,121개의 염기서열은 총 10,353개의 contig로 정리되었다.<br/> 이들 염기서열을 기존 데이터베이스를 대상으로 tBlastX(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nig.gov/BLAST) 분석을 실시한 결과, 염기서열 중 56 %가 기존 데이터베이스에 존재하는 유전자와의 상동성을 보였다. 상동성을 보이는 유전자들은 유전자의 구조 및 기능 분석에 이용될 것이고, 상동성을 보이지 않는 유전자들은 microarray와 같은 대량 유전자 발현분석 시스템을 이용하여 선별한 후 기능분석이 실시될 것이다.

        Highly efficient vertical growth of wall-number-selected, N-doped carbon nanotube arrays.

        <P>We demonstrate a straightforward approach for rapid growth of wall-number selected, N-doped CNT arrays. Highly uniform nanopatterned iron catalyst arrays were prepared by tilted deposition through block copolymer nanotemplates. PECVD growth of CNTs from the nanopatterned catalysts in an NH(3) environment generated vertical N-doped CNTs with a fine-tunability of their carbon wall numbers. The optimized growth conditions produced 52 microm long N-doped CNTs within 1 min. Owing to N-doping, the wall-number selected CNTs including DWNTs and TWNTs demonstrated enhanced electro-conductivity and chemical functionality. This remarkably fast growth of highly uniform N-doped CNTs, whose material properties and chemical functionalizability are reinforced by N-doping, offers a new area of large-scale nanofabrication, potentially useful for diverse nanodevices.</P>

        Preimplantation genetic diagnosis for Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease

        Objective: Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is an assisted reproductive technique for couples carrying genetic risks. Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is the most common hereditary neuropathy, with a prevalence rate of 1/2,500. In this study, we report on our experience with PGD cycles performed for CMT types 1A and 2F. Methods: Before clinical PGD, we assessed the amplification rate and allele drop-out (ADO) rate of multiplex fluorescent polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by fragment analysis or sequencing using single lymphocytes. We performed six cycles of PGD for CMT1A and one cycle for CMT2F. Results: Two duplex and two triplex protocols were developed according to the available markers for each CMT1A couple. Depending on the PCR protocols, the amplification rates and ADO rates ranged from 90.0% to 98.3% and 0.0% to 11.1%, respectively. For CMT2F, the amplification rates and ADO rates were 93.3% and 4.8%, respectively. In case of CMT1A, 60 out of 63 embryos (95.2%) were diagnosed and 13 out of 21 unaffected embryos were transferred in five cycles. Two pregnancies were achieved and three babies were delivered without any complications. In the case of CMT2F, a total of eight embryos were analyzed and diagnosed. Seven embryos were diagnosed as unaffected and four embryos were transferred, resulting in a twin pregnancy. Two healthy babies were delivered. Conclusion: This is the first report of successful pregnancy and delivery after specific PGD for CMT disease in Korea. Our PGD procedure could provide healthy babies to couples with a high risk of transmitting genetic diseases.

      • A first-in-human, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, dose escalation study of DWP05195, a novel TRPV1 antagonist, in healthy volunteers

        <P><B>Objectives</B></P><P>DWP05195 is a transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) antagonist developed for managing pain. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pharmacodynamics pharmacokinetics, safety, and tolerability of DWP05195 in healthy subjects. This was a first-in-human randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, dose escalation study.</P><P><B>Subjects and methods</B></P><P>DWP05195 or placebo was administered as a single dose of 10–600 mg in the single-dose study and as 100–400 mg once daily for 8 days in the multiple-dose studies. Each study group consisted of 10 subjects (study drug-to-placebo ratio was 8:2). For pharmacodynamics assessment, the heat pain threshold (HPtr), heat pain tolerance (HPtol), perfusion intensity, and flare area ratio of cutaneous blood flow were measured. Safety and tolerability were evaluated throughout the study.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>The maximum plasma concentrations and area under the plasma concentration–time curve from zero to the last measurable time dose-dependently increased. HPtr and HPtol tended to increase more after DWP05195 administration than after placebo administration. HPtr and HPtol tended to dose-dependently increase after administration of DWP05195. Cutaneous blood flow was reduced as the dose of DWP05195 increased during the multiple-dose study. DWP05195 was well tolerated up to 600 and 400 mg single- and multiple-dose administrations, respectively.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>The pharmacological activity of DWP05195, measured using HPtr and HPtol, increased as expected in a dose-dependent manner owing to increased systemic exposure, indicating that DWP05195 can be used as a TRPV1 antagonist for pain management.</P>

        An easy way to use artificial neural network model for calculating stability number of rock armors

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Since Van der Meer proposed a new empirical formula to calculate the stability number of rock armors based on his own experimental data in 1987, the data have been used in the development of artificial neural network (ANN) models. However, the ANN models are seldom used probably because they did not significantly improve the accuracy compared with the empirical formula and/or the engineers are not familiar with the ANN models. To resolve these problems, first we develop an ANN model combined with a principal component analysis (PCA) that markedly improves the accuracy of the model. The by-products of the model such as weights and biases are then used to develop an explicit method to calculate the stability number. The developed method is not as simple as the empirical formula but it can be easily used by an engineer who has basic knowledge of matrix operation without requiring knowledge of ANN and PCA. It is equally accurate as the developed ANN-PCA hybrid model and more accurate than previous empirical formula and ANN models.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> An explicit method other than empirical formula is proposed to calculate stability number of rock armors. </LI> <LI> An ANN-PCA hybrid model is developed based on the experimental data of Van der Meer. </LI> <LI> The by-products of the hybrid model are used for the explicit method. </LI> <LI> The method is more accurate than previous empirical formulas and ANN models. </LI> <LI> The method can be used by engineers with only basic knowledge of matrix operation. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Effect of Dietary Sargassum Meal on Growth and Body Composition of Ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis) Reared in Seawater

        This study was conducted to investigate the utilization of Sargassum meal in the diet on juvenile ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis) reared in seawater. White fish meal and wheat flour were used as the dietary protein and carbohydrate sources in the control diet. Wheat flour in the control diet was replaced with 5% and 10% Sargassum meal. Three replicate groups of fish average weighing 4.0g were fed one of three isonitrogenous (45%) and isocaloric (14.5 MJ/kg diet) diets for 7 weeks. Survival of all groups were above 80%. Weight gain, feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio were not significantly affected by dietary Sargassum meal levels (P>0.05). There were no significant differences (P>0.05) in moisture, crude protein, crude lipid, crude ash and fatty acid compositions of whole-body fish among groups. It is concluded that Sargassum meal could be used as a dietary additive or alternative low-cost dietary ingredient up to 10% for juvenile ayu reared in seawater.
