High Resistivity Characteristics of the Sinter Dust Generated from the Steel Plant
Lee, Jae-Keun,Hyun, Ok-Chun,Lee, Jung-Eun,Park, Sang-Deok The Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers 2001 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.15 No.5
The electrical resistivity of sinter dusts generated from the steel industry and coal fly ash from the coal power plant has been investigated using the high voltage conductivity cell based on JIS B 9915 as a function of temperature and water content. Dust characterization such as the chemical composition, size distribution, atomic concentration, and surface structure has been conducted. Major constituents of sinter dusts were Fe$_2$O$_3$(40∼74.5%), CaO (6.4∼8.2%), SiO$_2$(4.1∼6.0%), and unburned carbon (7.0∼14.7%), while the coal fly ash consisted of mainly SiO$_2$(51.4%), Al$_2$O$_3$(24.1%), and Fe$_2$O$_3$(10.5%). Size distributions of the sinter dusts were bi-modal in shape and the mass median diameters (MMD) were in the range of 24.7∼137㎛, whereas the coal fly ash also displayed bi-modal distribution and the MMD of the coal fly ash was 35.71㎛. Factors affecting resistivity of dusts were chemical composition, moisture content, particle size, gas temperature, and surface structure of dust. The resistivity of sinter dusts was so high as 10(sup)15 ohm$.$cm at 150$\^{C}$ that sinter dust would not precipitate well. The resistivity of the coal fly ash was measured 1012 ohm$.$cm at about 150$\^{C}$. Increased water contents of the ambient air lowered the dust resistivity because current conduction was more activated for absorption of water vapor on the surface layer of the dust.

A series of idealised experiments using a cloud-resolving storm simulator (CReSS) was performed to investigate the effects of the isolated elliptically shaped terrain of Jeju Island (oriented east-west), southern Korea, on the enhancement of pre-existing rainfall systems under the influence of prevailing southwesterly moist flows. Control parameters were the low-altitude wind speed (Froude numbers: 0.2, 0.4, 0.55) and the initial location of the elongated (oriented north-east) rainfall system (off the northwestern or western shores of the island). Simulations were conducted for all combinations of initial location and wind regime. Overall, results indicate that weak southwesterlies flowing around the steep mountain on the island (height, 2 km) generate two local convergences, on the northern lateral side and on the lee side of the island, both in regions of moist environments, thus producing conditions favourable for enhanced rainfall. As an eastward-moving rainfall system approaches the northwestern shore of the island, the southwesterlies at low altitudes accelerate between the system and the terrain, generating a local updraft region that causes rainfall enhancement onshore in advance of the system's arrival over the terrain. Thus, the prevailing southwesterlies at low altitudes that are parallel to the terrain are a crucial element for the enhancement. Relatively weak southwesterlies at low altitudes allow system enhancement on the lee side by generating a convergence of relatively weak go-around northwesterlies from the northern island and relatively strong moist southwesterlies from the southern island, thus producing a relatively long-lived rainfall system. As the southwesterlies strengthen, a dry descending air mass intensifies on the northeastern downwind side of the terrain, rapidly dissipating rainfall and resulting in a relatively short-lived rainfall system. A coexisting terrain-generated local convergence, combined with the absence of dry descending air on the downwind side of the terrain, prolongs the lifetime of the rainfall system.

<P>A slightly halophilic, Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile rod, designated TW15T, was isolated from an ark clam in South Korea. Growth occurred at 10-37 °C, with 1-5 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 7.0-10.0. Optimal growth occurred at 25-30 °C, with 2 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 8.0. Strain TW15T exhibited both oxidase and catalase activities. The major fatty acids of strain TW15T were summed feature 8 (consisting of C18 : 1ω7<I>c</I> and/or C18 : 1ω6<I>c</I>) and 11-methyl C18 : 1ω7<I>c</I>. The predominant isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone-10 (Q-10). The polar lipids of strain TW15T comprised phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified phospholipid, an unidentified aminolipid and five unidentified lipids. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain TW15T was most closely related to <I>Ruegeria lacuscaerulensis</I> DSM 11314T (98.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). DNA-DNA relatedness with closely related strains was <52±3 %. The DNA G+C content was 55.7 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic data, strain TW15T represents a novel species of the genus <I>Ruegeria</I>, for which the name <I>Ruegeria conchae</I> sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TW15T ( = KACC 15115T = JCM 17315T).</P>

( Keun Mo Kim ),( Young Min Oh ),( Sung Nam Lim ),( Song Yi Choi ),( Ok Jun Lee ),( Kang Hyeon Choe ),( Ki Man Lee ),( Jin Young An ) 대한결핵 및 호흡기학회 2014 Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases Vol.76 No.4
A nasal-type extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma is considered an aggressive form of non-Hodgkin`s lymphoma, with approximately half of all patients relapsing during the follow-up period, and most relapses occurring within the first 2 years of remission. Here we report an unusual case of a 42-year-old man who experienced recurrence in single pleura after 8 years of remission.
Efficient adsorption of sulfide gas using porous zeolite powder
Lee Sang-hwa,Jeon Young Pyo,Lee Young Jun,La Yunju,Song Jun Yong,Park Yong Yeol,Lee Eun Jung,Jeon Ok Sung,Park Sang Yoon,Yoo Young Joon,Yang Keun-Hyeok 한국물리학회 2021 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.79 No.12
We prepared zeolite 13× beads and 10% zeolite 13× bead-embedded water-permeable blocks using porous zeolite powder. The difference in the surface state and pore structure of the zeolite powder and bead was analyzed through scanning electron microscopy and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller measurements. The process for making zeolite beads partially damaged their surface. Furthermore, the pore structure of the zeolite beads changed from micropores to a mixture of micro- and mesopores. The sulfur oxide ( SOx) adsorption efficiency of zeolite powder, beads, and blocks was evaluated. The initial SOx adsorption efficiency of zeolite beads decreased after washing ten times, but the increase in SOx concentration after initial adsorption was very small. The SOx adsorption efficiency of the block was very high even after washing ten times. These results indicate that the block is promising for applications requiring the adsorption of harmful gases such as SOx and NOx.

<P>Although archaea, Gram-negative bacteria, and mammalian cells constitutively secrete membrane vesicles (MVs) as a mechanism for cell-free intercellular communication, this cellular process has been overlooked in Gram-positive bacteria. Here, we found for the first time that Gram-positive bacteria naturally produce MVs into the extracellular milieu. Further characterizations showed that the density and size of Staphylococcus aureus-derived MVs are both similar to those of Gram-negative bacteria. With a proteomics approach, we identified with high confidence a total of 90 protein components of S. aureus-derived MVs. In the group of identified proteins, the highly enriched extracellular proteins suggested that a specific sorting mechanism for vesicular proteins exists. We also identified proteins that facilitate the transfer of proteins to other bacteria, as well to eliminate competing organisms, antibiotic resistance, pathological functions in systemic infections, and MV biogenesis. Taken together, these observations suggest that the secretion of MVs is an evolutionally conserved, universal process that occurs from simple organisms to complex multicellular organisms. This information will help us not only to elucidate the biogenesis and functions of MVs, but also to develop therapeutic tools for vaccines, diagnosis, and antibiotics effective against pathogenic strains of Gram-positive bacteria.</P>

Lee, Jina,Shin, Na-Ri,Jung, Mi-Ja,Roh, Seong Woon,Kim, Min-Soo,Lee, Jung-Sook,Lee, Keun Chul,Kim, Young-Ok,Bae, Jin-Woo Society for General Microbiology 2013 International journal of systematic and evolutiona Vol.63 No.2
<P>A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, aerobic, endospore forming and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain L10(T), was isolated from marine sediment collected from the South Korean coast. The organism grew optimally under conditions of 30 C, 1?% (w/v) NaCl and pH 6.0. It was oxidase-negative and catalase-positive. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain L10(T) was associated with the genus Paenibacillus and most closely related to Paenibacillus barcinonensis BP-23(T) (98.2?% similarity). The major fatty acids of strain L10(T) were iso-C(14?:?0), anteiso-C(15?:?0) and iso-C(16?:?0). The cell-wall peptidoglycan was the A1γ type, and the predominant isoprenoid quinone was menaquinone-7. Strain L10(T) contained two unidentified lipids, an unidentified amino-phospholipid, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, and diphosphatidylglycerol. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 44 mol% and the DNA-DNA hybridization values with closely related strains were below 142?%. Based on phenotypic, genotypic, and phylogenetic data, strain L10(T) should be classified as a novel species within the genus Paenibacillus. The name Paenibacillus oceanisediminis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is L10(T) (?=?KACC 16203(T)?=?JCM 17814(T)).</P>
Spinal Arteriovenous Malformation Masquerating Zoster Sine Herpete
Lee, Ji Young,Ok, Se Jin,Oh, Chang Keun,Park, Sun Kyung,Kim, Do Wan,Yang, Jong Yeun The Korean Pain Society 2013 The Korean Journal of Pain Vol.26 No.1
Zoster sine herpete (ZSH) is difficult to diagnosis during an acute period due to the absence of the characteristic zosteriform dermatomal rash; therefore, progression to postherpetic neuralgia is more common than typical zoster. In addition, misdiagnosis of other neuropathic pain as ZSH is common in clinical situations. Here, we report a case of spinal arteriovenous malformation that mimics ZSH. This is a rare condition; therefore, high clinical suspicion for a correct diagnosis and proper examination are not easy. However, early diagnosis and definitive treatment are essential to prevent neurologic deficit and mortality.
Agenesis of the vulva in a Poodle dog
Lee, Jae-il,Lee, Ok-Keun,Kim, Yong-suk,Kim, Myung-Jin,Hong, Sung-Hyeok The Korean Society of Veterinary Science 2007 大韓獸醫學會誌 Vol.47 No.2
Vulvar agenesis in an eight-month-old toy poodle dog is described. Urinary incontinence and dysuria were the main clinical signs. The morphology of the urogenital system was assessed with contrast radiography. The constructers of lower urinary tract and reproductive system except for the vulva were normal features. Through episiostomy, a perineal stoma, resembling a vulva, was created, resulting in complete resolution of the clinical signs.
