Abstract

A facile one-step synthetic approach was developed for fabrication of fluorescent silicon quantum dots (Si QDs) and used as a probe for fluorescence detection of hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) in environmental water samples. The as-prepared Si QDs exhibit a strong fluorescence emission peak at 520 nm with a quantum yield of 14.2%. The fluorescent Si QDs were rapidly produced by using ascorbic acid as a reductant at 55 °C. The emission peak of Si QDs at 420 nm was effectively quenched upon the addition of Cr(VI). The Si QDs acted as the best fluorescent probe for the detection of Cr(VI) at PBS pH 7.4. The developed probe possessed a good linear correlation (R2 = 0.992) between Cr(VI) concentration (1.25–40 μM) and the (F0-F)/F0 values with a detection limit of 0.65 μM. Furthermore, the Si QDs served as a bio-probe for fluorescence imaging of A549 lung cancer cells and cell viability results confirmed the good biocompatible nature of Si QDs. The as-fabricated Si QDs show several advantages such as rapidity, selectivity and biocompatibility for sensing of Cr(VI) and imaging of A549 cells, which opens a facile analytical platform for environmental and bioimaging applications.

Highlights

Facile one-step hydrothermal method for synthesis of fluorescent Si QDs

A rapid probe was developed for analysis of Cr(VI) without any sample preparations.

The detection limit of Cr(VI) was estimated to be 0.65 μM.

The method exhibited good selectivity and sensitivity for assay of Cr(VI).

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

Abstract

Herein, a straightforward and highly specific dot-blot immunoassay was successfully developed for the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis antigen (10 kDa culture filtrate protein, CFP-10) via the formation of copper nanoshell on the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) surface. The principle of dot-blot immunoassay was based on the reduction of Cu2+ ion on the GBP-CFP10G2-AuNPs conjugates, which has gold binding and antigen binding affinities, simultaneously, favouring to appear red dot that can be observed with naked-eye. The dot intensity is proportional to the concentration of tuberculosis antigen CFP-10, which offers a detection limit of 7.6 pg/mL. The analytical performance of GBP-CFP10G2-AuNPs-copper nanoshell dot-blot was superior than that of conventional silver nanoshell. This method was successfully applied to identify the CFP-10 antigen in the clinical urine sample with high sensitivity, specificity, and minimized sample preparation steps. Objectives: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has increased the workload of healthcare workers (HCWs), impacting their health. This study aimed to assess sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and identify factors associated with poor sleep among HCWs in Vietnam during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 1000 frontline HCWs were recruited from various healthcare facilities in Vietnam between October 2021 and November 2021. Data were collected using a 3-part self-administered questionnaire, which covered demographics, sleep quality, and factors related to poor sleep. Poor sleep quality was defined as a total PSQI score of 5 or higher. Results: Participants' mean age was 33.20±6.81 years (range, 20.0-61.0), and 63.0% were women. The median work experience was 8.54±6.30 years. Approximately 6.3% had chronic comorbidities, such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus. About 59.5% were directly responsible for patient care and treatment, while 7.1% worked in tracing and sampling. A total of 73.8% reported poor sleep quality. Multivariate logistic regression revealed significant associations between poor sleep quality and the presence of chronic comorbidities (odds ratio [OR], 2.34; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.17 to 5.24), being a frontline HCW directly involved in patient care and treatment (OR, 1.59; 95% CI, 1.16 to 2.16), increased working hours (OR, 1.84; 95% CI,1.37 to 2.48), and a higher frequency of encountering critically ill and dying patients (OR, 1.42; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.95). Conclusions: The high prevalence of poor sleep among HCWs in Vietnam during the COVID-19 pandemic was similar to that in other countries. Working conditions should be adjusted to improve sleep quality among this population.

Efforts to reduce tobacco use among school children need to be based on understanding of access to cigarettes by these subjects because previous studies indicated that enforcement of laws for controlling tobacco sales seems to not affect teen/school children because they can obtain cigarettes from different sources. This paper aims to describe access to and availability of cigarettes among school students (aged 13-15 years old) according to the data from GYTS Vietnam 2014. In GYTS, a national school-based survey of students of grades 8-10, our findings showed that about 15% school children are current smokers who smoke at home, and that they could easily buy cigarettes from stores (63.2%), or someone else (27.8%), or street vendors (9%). Notably, over 85% of school children answered that they were not refused because of their age. This high percentage was nearly the same in the North (85.7%), the Centre (92.5%), and the South (89.7%) of Viet Nam. These findings show that it is quite easy for school children to obtain cigarettes and this is a crucial challenge for policy makers aiming to reduce tobacco use among youth in general and school-age students in particular.

Purpose The current study aimed to use network analysis to investigate medical and health students’ readiness for online learning during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hue University. Methods A questionnaire survey on the students’ readiness for online learning was performed using a Google Form from May 13 to June 22, 2021. In total, 1,377 completed responses were eligible for analysis out of 1,411 participants. The network structure was estimated for readiness scales with 6 factors: computer skills, internet skills, online communication, motivation, self-control, and self-learning. Data were fitted using a Gaussian graphical model with the extended Bayesian information criterion. Results In 1,377 students, a network structure was identified with 6 nodes and no isolated nodes. The top 3 partial correlations were similar in networks for the overall sample and subgroups of gender and grade levels. The self-control node was the strongest for the connection to others, with the highest nodal strength. The change of nodal strength was greatest in online communication for both gender and grade levels. The correlation stability coefficient for nodal strength was achieved for all networks. Conclusion These findings indicated that self-control was the most important factor in students’ readiness network structures for online learning. Therefore, self-control needs to be encouraged during online learning to improve the effectiveness of achieving online learning outcomes for students.

This study examines the impact of CSR and its authenticity on customer loyalty through the brand image in the chain coffee shop industry. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, 601 survey questionnaires were distributed, of which 491 were analyzed. The results show that CSR has a positive impact on brand image and customer loyalty. In addition, authenticity does not moderate the impact of CSR on brand image and loyalty, as it is difficult for customers to verify the authenticity of CSR action programs. This study emphasizes the importance of CSR action programs and authenticity for businesses to sustainably enhance their distinctive brand image and customer loyalty. Therefore, for sustainable development in the future, managers of coffee shop chains need to focus on the following issues. First, the most important thing is the right awareness of businesses regarding CSR and CSR authenticity. Third, businesses should strengthen the transparency of CSR action programs in various media so that consumers can easily verify authenticity, to increase brand image and improve customer loyalty.

The upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP) were characterized by means of electron microscopy and spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and photoluminescence analysis. The molar concentration of reactants and volumes of NaF affect the shapes and uniformity of the synthesized NPs. These parameters also have influence on crystal phase and luminescence intensity of the NPs. Adjusting hydrothermal reaction time and dopant concentration also enable the synthesis of NPs with strong UC luminescence.
