        Determinants of Firm Value

Lan NGUYEN,Thi Khanh Phuong TAN,Thu Ha NGUYEN 한국유통과학회 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.6

This study aims to investigate the importance of firm value and the factors that affect the firm value of trading companies listed on the Vietnamese stock exchange, thereby enhancing the current literature related to this topic in our country. The factors that affect firm value include firm size, capital structure, profitability, sales, and liquidity whereas firm value is represented by the value of equity. This work employed a data set with 925 observations, which are trading firms listed on the Vietnam Stock Exchange over a nine-year period from 2011 to 2019 with the support of STATA version 2016. Applying the quantitative method, we first find that firm size is of the greatest importance to firm value. It refers that the value of a large company is of a higher rank than a small company. On the other hand, capital structure is found to have a negative impact on firm value. Furthermore, we find that the other independent variables (profitability, sales, and liquidity) are statistically insignificant in the regression model. This means that those mentioned factors do not affect firm value. More importantly, the research also suggests that both firm size and capital structure are crucial for firm value in the trading industry in Vietnam.

E-commerce Adoption in Distribution: An Empirical Study on Household Businesses in Food and Beverage Industry

NGUYEN, Xuan Truong,NGUYEN, Thai Ha,DANG, Huynh Phuong,PHAM, Thi Lan Phuong,BUI, Thi Thanh,TRAN, Nhat Minh,HUYNH, Tri An,NGUYEN, Nam Phong Korea Distribution Science Association 2022 유통과학연구 Vol.20 No.2

Purpose: This study aims to identify factors affecting the adoption of e-commerce by household businesses in Vietnam's food and beverage industry. Research design, data and methodology: The integrated TAM and TOE frameworks and ten hypotheses were developed to test the relationship between relevant factors. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to collect valid data from 992 respondents who run F&B household businesses in Vietnam. Results: The empirical research results confirm all proposed hypotheses that e-commerce adoption is affected by the perceived usefulness, the perceived ease of use, vendor support partners, social expectancy, competitive pressure, subjective norm, and household resources. Meanwhile, technical readiness, environment readiness, and organization readiness are intermediate variables that influence the implementation of e-commerce in food and beverage distribution. Conclusions: The findings suggest effective orientations to foster the food and beverage e-trading practice for household businesses in developing countries. Accordingly, to encourage private household businesses to adopt e-commerce, it is necessary to focus on improving business resources, technology readiness, environment readiness, and organization readiness through raising awareness of usefulness, benefits, perceived ease of use, and increased support of vendor partners. Future research can focus on improving the efficiency of e-commerce applications in F&B distribution for both household businesses and larger-scale enterprises.

Establishment of a NanoBiT-Based Cytosolic Ca2+ Sensor by Optimizing Calmodulin-Binding Motif and Protein Expression Levels

2020 Molecules and cells Vol.43 No.11

Cytosolic Ca2+ levels ([Ca2+]c) change dynamically in response to inducers, repressors, and physiological conditions, and aberrant [Ca2+]c concentration regulation is associated with cancer, heart failure, and diabetes. Therefore, [Ca2+]c is considered as a good indicator of physiological and pathological cellular responses, and is a crucial biomarker for drug discovery. A genetically encoded calcium indicator (GECI) was recently developed to measure [Ca2+]c in single cells and animal models. GECI have some advantages over chemically synthesized indicators, although they also have some drawbacks such as poor signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), low positive signal, delayed response, artifactual responses due to protein overexpression, and expensive detection equipment. Here, we developed an indicator based on interactions between Ca2+-loaded calmodulin and target proteins, and generated an innovative GECI sensor using split nano-luciferase (Nluc) fragments to detect changes in [Ca2+]c. Stimulation-dependent luciferase activities were optimized by combining large and small subunits of Nluc binary technology (NanoBiT, LgBiT:SmBiT) fusion proteins and regulating the receptor expression levels. We constructed the binary [Ca2+]c sensors using a multicistronic expression system in a single vector linked via the internal ribosome entry site (IRES), and examined the detection efficiencies. Promoter optimization studies indicated that promoter-dependent protein expression levels were crucial to optimize SNR and sensitivity. This novel [Ca2+]c assay has high SNR and sensitivity, is easy to use, suitable for high-throughput assays, and may be useful to detect [Ca2+]c in single cells and animal models.

      • Reaction Kinetics of Substrate Transglycosylation Catalyzed by TreX of <i>Sulfolobus solfataricus</i> and Effects on Glycogen Breakdown

        Nguyen, Dang Hai Dang,Park, Jong-Tae,Shim, Jae-Hoon,Tran, Phuong Lan,Oktavina, Ershita Fitria,Nguyen, Thi Lan Huong,Lee, Sung-Jae,Park, Cheon-Seok,Li, Dan,Park, Sung-Hoon,Stapleton, David,Lee, Jin-Sil American Society for Microbiology 2014 Journal of Bacteriology Vol.196 No.11

<P>We studied the activity of a debranching enzyme (TreX) from <I>Sulfolobus solfataricus</I> on glycogen-mimic substrates, branched maltotetraosyl-β-cyclodextrin (Glc4-β-CD), and natural glycogen to better understand substrate transglycosylation and the effect thereof on glycogen debranching in microorganisms. The validation test of Glc4-β-CD as a glycogen mimic substrate showed that it followed the breakdown process of the well-known yeast and rat liver extract. TreX catalyzed both hydrolysis of α-1,6-glycosidic linkages and transglycosylation at relatively high (>0.5 mM) substrate concentrations. TreX transferred maltotetraosyl moieties from the donor substrate to acceptor molecules, resulting in the formation of two positional isomers of dimaltotetraosyl-α-1,6-β-cyclodextrin [(Glc4)2-β-CD]; these were 61,63- and 61,64-dimaltotetraosyl-α-1,6-β-CD. Use of a modified Michaelis-Menten equation to study substrate transglycosylation revealed that the <I>k</I>cat and <I>Km</I> values for transglycosylation were 1.78 × 103 s−1 and 3.30 mM, respectively, whereas the values for hydrolysis were 2.57 × 103 s−1 and 0.206 mM, respectively. Also, enzyme catalytic efficiency (the <I>k</I>cat/<I>Km</I> ratio) increased as the degree of polymerization of branch chains rose. In the model reaction system of <I>Escherichia coli</I>, glucose-1-phosphate production from glycogen by the glycogen phosphorylase was elevated ∼1.45-fold in the presence of TreX compared to that produced in the absence of TreX. The results suggest that outward shifting of glycogen branch chains via transglycosylation increases the number of exposed chains susceptible to phosphorylase action. We developed a model of the glycogen breakdown process featuring both hydrolysis and transglycosylation catalyzed by the debranching enzyme.</P>

Effect of salicylic acid and yeast extract on curcuminoids biosynthesis gene expression and curcumin accumulation in cells of Curcuma zedoaria

Nguyen Hoang Loc,Truong Thi Phuong Lan,Nguyen Duc Huy,Nguyen Ngoc Luong,Hoang Tan Quang,Trinh Huu Tan,Le Thi Anh Thu,Nguyen Xuan Huy 한국식물생명공학회 2019 JOURNAL OF PLANT BIOTECHNOLOGY Vol.46 No.3

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of yeast extract (YE) and salicylic acid (SA) on the expression of curcuminoid-biosynthesis genes (CzDCS and CURS1-3), and accumulation of curcumin in Curcuma zedoaria cell cultures. The results showed that, in cells treated with YE or SA, the expression levels of curcuminoid genes were 1.14- to 3.64-fold higher than the control (untreated cells), in which the YE exhibited a stronger effect in comparison with SA. Curcumin accumulation also tended to be similar to gene expression, curcumin contents in YE- or SA-treated cells were 1.61- to 2.53-fold higher than the control. The SA treatment at the fifth day of culture stimulated the curcumin accumulation and expression in all four genes compared to that at the beginning. While the YE treatments gave different results, the CzCURS1 and CzCURS3 genes were expressed strongly in cells that were treated at the beginning. However, the CzDCS and CzCURS2 genes showed the opposite expression pattern, they were activated strongly in the treatments at day five of the culture. However, the content of curcumin reached its maximum value on the fifth day of culture in all investigations.

An Empirical Study of Customers’ Satisfaction and Repurchase Intention on Online Shopping in Vietnam

Lan NGUYEN,Thu Ha NGUYEN,Thi Khanh Phuong TAN 한국유통과학회 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.1

This study aims to examine the factors that affect customer satisfaction and repurchase intention of online shoppers in Vietnam. We used the anklet method to collect information by sending the online questionnaire to Vietnamese people via social media like Facebook, Zalo, and instructed participants to fill out the survey. This study collected data randomly from 597 Vietnamese individuals who have experienced online shopping. Applying both qualitative and quantitative methods, we investigated the impacts of factors (responsiveness, trust, convenience, delivery, information quality and perceived website usability) on customer satisfaction and repurchase intention. The results revealed that: (1) Information quality, delivery, convenience, and perceived website usability have the most significant impacts on customer satisfaction and intention, (2) Trust moderately affects satisfaction and repurchase intention, (3) Responsiveness has no significant influence on repurchase intention and (4) Control variables, included gender and marital status also impacted satisfaction and repurchase intention because the study found that male customers are more satisfied than female customers and single people tend to repurchase at familiar websites more than the other people. The findings suggested that six mentioned factors have different levels of impacts on customer satisfaction and repurchase intention; moreover, the demographic factors also affect satisfaction and intention to repurchase.
