In order to detect the safety and effect of various aqua-acupunctures from Scutellariae Radix, the modifications of boiling, filtration and dilution were employed for the manufacture of aqua-acupunctures. We injected 0.2cc of aqua-acupunctures into Joksamri(足三里) of rat, repeatedly. we compared subacute toxicity of them with saline group, distilled water(D.W.) group, acupuncture group and control group. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The groups were all healthy and alive, and there was no special abnormality in physical condition and autopsy. And there were not any toxic symptoms in repeating application of aqua-acupunctures to the rat, including changes of body weight, organ weight, haematological examination and serum biochemical test. 2. There was slight change of body weight in acupuncture group : We could see significance after 3 days (p<0.05) and after 7 days (p<0.001) in body weight loss. After 9 days, all tested groups were suppressed in body weight increment. 3. Result of organ weight: In Palking aqua-acupuncture(D-2 group), saline group and acupuncture group there were some statistical significance. Especially, acupuncture group revealed significant result in liver and spleen than aqua-acupunctures. From this result, we could suggest that the efficacy of acupuncture was preceded herbal medicine. 4. In serum biochemical test, we examined glucose(GLU), triglyceride(TG) and cholesterol(CHOL). In comparison with control group, the diluted 10 times of hwanggum aqua-acupuncture (× 10 group) was recognized significant decrease of glucose, but the diluted 100 times of Hwanggum aqua-acupuncture (× 100 group), D-2 group, saline group were confirmed significant increment. There was not any meaningful change of CHOL in all of tested group, excepting the acupuncture group was exhibited statistically significant decrease(p<0.05). In TG level all tested group except complex injection of standard compound (CPA group) and HG, there were significant value in statistically. The diluted solution was more significant decrease than Hwanggaum aqua-acupuncture(HG). The mutual relationship of components of aqua-acupuncture tended to decrease level of TG, regardless of its concentration. In acupuncture group, we gained some interesting result in meaningful decrease in TG. 5. Haematological examination showed significant increment of gramulocytes(GR) in all tested groups except Hwanggum aqua-acupuncture. And the diluted solutions of HG expressed very high increment of them(p<0.001). The GR and Mean Corpuscular Volume(MCV) of acupuncture group showed statistical significance.

N/A Objectives: Protein-calorie malnutrition is a common problem in patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), Serum albumin(SA) concentration has been used as a marker for assessing nutritional status. Hypoalbuminemia has been linked to an increased risk of morbidity and mortality and more numerous, prolonged hospitalization for peritoneal dialysis patients. The aim of this study was to determine factors affecting SA value in CAPD patients. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study which included patients` demographics, anthropometric data, biochemical parameters, urea kinetic data and comorbidity in 106 stable CAPD patients. Results: 1) There were 50 men and 56 women with a mean CAPD duration of 43 months and mean age of 49 years. The mean concentration of SA was 3.9±0.5 (range 2.5-5.3) g/dl and weekly Kt/Vurea 2.0±0.4 (range 1.32-3.79) 2) Twenty-one patients(20%) were classified as group I(SA<3.5g/dl)and the remaining patients(80%) as group II(SA≥3.5g/dl) 3) Group I patients were significantly older(55±11 vs 47±11 years, p<0.05%) and had significantly higher comorbidity score(1.5±0.8 vs 0.7±0.9, p<0.05), C-reactive protein (4.5±0.9 vs 0.5±0.1 mg/dl, p<0.05%), 24-hr dialysate-to-plasma creatinine(D/PCr) ratio(0.84±0.1 vs 0.76±0.1, p<0.05), 24-hr dialysate protein (7167±2031 vs 5471±1515 mg, p<0.05) and had significantly lower residual renal function(RRF)(0.2±03 vs 0.7±1.2 ml/min, p<0.05), BUN(48±14.8 vs 55.6±14.9 mg/dl, p<0.05), serum creatinine(10.4±2.8 vs 12.6±3.5 mg/dl, p<0.05), IGF-1(186±99 vs 260±131 ng/ml, p<0.05), serum phosphorus(4.1±1.2 vs 5.0±1.3 mg /dl, p<0.05) than group II. 4) SA showed positive correlation with anion gap (r=0.43, p value=0.001), transferrin(r-0.41, p value=0.001) phosphorus(r=0.31, p value=0.001) and negative correlation with 24-hr dialysate protein loss(r=-0.51, p value=0.001), 24-hr D/PCr ratio(r=-0.49, p value=0.001), comorbidity score(r=-0.36, p vluue=0.001). NPCB(r=0.22, p vaiue=0.023), IGF-1(r=0.30, p value=0.002), BUN(r=0.23, p ualue=0.016) weakly correlated with SA. 5) By stepwise multiple logistic regression analysis, age, CRP, 24-hr D/PCr ratio and RBF independently influenced SA level. Conclusion: SA level seems to be affected by non-nutritional factors such as age, peritoneal membrane transport characteristics, residual renal function and presence of acute phase protein response manifested by CRP elevation, in addition to nutritional factors.

The present study reports isolation and characterization of ten polymorphic SSR markers developed from common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench). These SSR markers produced a total of 59 alleles across 41 common buckwheat accessions with an average of 5.9 alleles per locus. Values for observed (HO) and expected (HE) heterozygosities ranged from 0.071 to 0.924 (mean=0.53) and from 0.073 to 0.902 (mean=0.412), respectively. At significance threshold (P<0.05), seven loci deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE), whereas significant linkage disequilibrium (LD) values were observed between 5 pairs of loci. These markers are currently being used for programming of the genetic conservation and classification of common buckwheat germplasm collection.

The SSR markers were generally used to analysis the plant genetic diversity, but it have been rarely reported in case of castor bean. We constructed the microsatellite-enriched genomic library and sequenced totally 775 clones to obtain the microsatellite sequence information of the castor bean. Among the sequenced clones, one hundred fifty clones (19.3%) were redundant and four hundred twenty (67.2%) were found to contain microsatellite sequences within the remaining 625 unique clones. A total of 237 primer pairs were designed based on the sequenced microsatellite clones information and evaluated for polymorphism in ten castor bean accessions. Twenty-eight SSR markers produced reproducible polymorphic bands and were further characterized using a diverse set of 25 castor bean accessions. The majority of unique SSRs revealed dinucleotide motives (84%) on the other hand the ratio of trinucleotide motives was 15%. A microsatellite enriched library from the Ricinus communis L. was mainly consisted of [(AG), (GA)/(CT), (TC)] and [(CTT)/(AAG)] microsatellite motifs. The length of dinucleotide SSRs ranged from 4 to 50 repeats with an average 12.4, and that of trinucleotide SSRs from 4 to 56 with an average of 7.35 repeats. These newly developed microsatellite markers will be useful for breeding system and classification of Ricinus communis L.

Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection is a common opportunistic infection in patients with AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). Pulmonary involvement of MAC may range from asymptomatic colonization of the respiratory tract to invasive parenchymal or cavitary disease. However, endobronchial lesions with MAC infection are rare in immunocompetent and immunosuppressed hosts. Here, we report MAC infection presenting as an endobronchial mass in a patient with AIDS.

Castor bean (Ricinus communis) is cultivated for seed oil throughout tropical and subtropical regions but the understanding of its genetic variability is limited. Because applicable microsatellite markers are not sufficient, we isolated and characterized polymorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci acquired from a microsatellite-enriched genomic DNA library of castor bean. Finally, 28 SSR loci revealed polymorphisms in a castor bean collection consisting of 72 accessions. A total of 73 alleles were detected, with an average of 3.18 alleles per locus, and the polymorphism information content (PIC) ranged from 0.03 to 0.47 (mean = 0.26). Values for observed ($H_o$) and expected ($H_E$) heterozygosity ranged from 0.00 to 0.19 (mean = 0.11) and from 0.04 to 0.54 (mean = 0.31), respectively. To understand genetic relationships within the castor bean collection, a dendrogram was constructed based on profiles of the 28 SSR loci. These newly developed SSRs will be useful tools for assessing genetic diversity and population structure in castor bean.

There are about 16 species included in Fagopyrum (Polygonaceae) genus and some of them have been found recently and named. Fagopyrum genus is generally divided into two major groups: cymosum and urophyllum group. This study is to analyze the genetic diversity of Fagopyrum genus, to compare with the phylogeny result of Fagopyrim using previous analysis results, and to provide the information of each species specific marker by executing the cross-amplification on 3 species and 2 sub-species among cymosum group and 5 species among urophyllum using 136 SSR markers newly developed from common buckwheat. Cluster analysis using UPGMA showed two main clusters, each of the cymosum and urophyllum group. This result agree well with the previous findings on species relationships in Fagopyrum using different method approachs. In cross species amplification, our results revealed significant transferability of F. esculentum microsatellites to the 4 cymosum species (96.3% in F. esculentum ssp. Ancestral, 61.0% in F. tataricum ssp. tataricum, 36.0% in F. tataricum ssp. potanini, 97.1% in F. homotropicum). However, the percentage of 136 SSR markers were amplified in the urophyllum species (50.7% in F. urophyllum, 50% in F. lineare, 60.3% in F. leptopodum, 66.9% in F. capillatum, 66.2% in F. gracilipes) was lower than cymosum species, except F. tataricum. In addition, we identified 61 species specific markers among each species. These results demonstrate wide potential applicabilityof these markers for the study of inter-specific genetic diversity as well as evolutionary relationships among cultivated and wild buckwheat.
