Purpose: This study evaluates the grey and white brain matter characteristics in women with multiple sclerosis (MS) and detrusor sphincter dyssynergia (DSD). Grey matter is assessed via the functional connectivity (FC) of brain regions activated during voiding, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Two white matter tracts involved in bladder function, the anterior thalamic radiation (ATR) and superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF), were evaluated using diffusion tensor imaging. Methods: Twenty-seven women with MS (2 groups: no-DSD [n=23] or DSD [n=4]), and 8 healthy controls (HCs) underwent concurrent urodynamic-fMRI evaluation with 4 cycles of bladder filling and emptying. A FC similarity measure (FC_ sim) was calculated for each subject to express the similarity of individual FC at voiding initiation compared to all FC patterns. ATR and SLF tracts were traced and their fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) were recorded. Results: Mean FC_sim values were significantly different among the 3 groups indicating distinct FC patterns; however, no significant difference was found between DSD and no-DSD groups. DSD group showed trends of lower FA and higher MD— indicating loss of coherence—in all tracts compared to HCs, and in the left and right ATR when compared to MS women with neither DSD nor voiding dysfunction (VD), suggesting more damage in these tracts for MS women with DSD. Conclusions: Women with MS show distinctly different FC patterns compared to HCs. There are trends showing more damage in the ATR in women with MS and DSD compared to those with neither DSD nor VD.

Most of conventional DSS's(Digital Signage Systems) have been built based on LAMP framework. Recent researches have shown that MEAN or MERN stack framework is simpler, more flexible, faster and more suitable for web-based application than LAMP stack framework. In this paper, we propose a design and implementation of MEARN (ME(A+R)N) stack-based real-time digital signage system, MR-DSS, which supports handing real-time tasks like urgent/instant messaging, system status monitoring and so on, efficiently in addition to conventional digital signage CMS service tasks. MR-DSCMS, CMS of MR-DSS, is designed to provide most of its normal services by REST APIs and real-time services like urgent/instant messaging by Socket.IO base under MEARN stack environment. In addition to architecture description of components composing MR-DSS, design and implementation issues are clarified in more detail. Through experimental testing, it is shown that 1) MR-DSS works functionally well, 2) the networking load performance of MR-DSCMS's REST APIs is better compared to a well-known open source Xibo CMS, and 3) real-time messaging via Socket.IO works much faster than REST APIs.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We developed a novel micro-patterning technique for single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) on nitrocellulose (NC) membranes and characterized the mechanical and electrical properties of the patterned SWCNTs. The SWCNT patterns were successfully fabricated on wax-printed NC membrane by a vacuum filtration method within 15 min. The well-deposited SWCNT layer on the NC membrane exhibited strong adhesion and high conductivity due to the interconnection of the SWCNT layer in the porous structure of the NC membrane. The distinguishable patterns were resolved down to approximately 100 μm. The patterned SWCNT had an average resistivity of less than 100 Ω/sq and showed excellent mechanical properties in repeated bending tests. The suitability of the patterned SWCNT electrodes for electronic devices was demonstrated successfully via a simple light emitting diode array. Moreover, for the application of the patterned SWCNT to electrochemical paper-based analytical devices (ePADs), the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were directly deposited on the SWCNT electrode for non-enzymatic glucose determination. The oxidation peak had a linear response with glucose concentration in the range between 0.5 and 10 mM. The ePADs exhibited a sensitivity of 240 μA/mM·cm2 and a detection limit of 148 μM, which was derived from the electro-catalytic property of AuNPs toward glucose. Based on these results, we believe that the developed SWCNT patterning technique on paper substrates has great potential in ePADs.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Micro-patterns of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were successfully fabricated on wax-printed papers. </LI> <LI> AuNPs were deposited on the SWCNT electrodes for the application to electrochemical paper-based analytical devices. </LI> <LI> The developed devices were applied successfully to non-enzymatic glucose determination. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
Stroke Width-Based Contrast Feature for Document Image Binarization
( Le Thi Khue Van ),( Guee Sang Lee ) 한국정보처리학회 2014 Journal of information processing systems Vol.10 No.1
Automatic segmentation of foreground text from the background in degraded document images is very much essential for the smooth reading of the document content and recognition tasks by machine. In this paper, we present a novel approach to the binarization of degraded document images. The proposed method uses a new local contrast feature extracted based on the stroke width of text. First, a pre-processing method is carried out for noise removal. Text boundary detection is then performed on the image constructed from the contrast feature. Then local estimation follows to extract text from the background. Finally, a refinement procedure is applied to the binarized image as a post-processing step to improve the quality of the final results. Experiments and comparisons of extracting text from degraded handwriting and machine-printed document image against some well-known binarization algorithms demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

<P>The capping agent plays a critical function in anisotropiccrystalgrowth to induce polyhedral morphology of a nanocrystal. Uniform andsingle-crystalline α-Fe2O3 polyhedralnanoparticles in the hexagonal single crystal system named truncatedhexagonal bipyramid for the first time were successfully synthesizedby a facile one-step hydrothermal method with the aid of carboxymethylcellulose and hydrazine molecules. The appearance and crystal structureof these iron oxide nanoparticles were characterized in detail byphysicochemical methods. The results show that the as-synthesizedα-Fe2O3 particles are bound by 12 same-sidecrystalline facets {101} and two other same facets {001} at the tops. These obtained iron oxide particles belong to a pure hematite phase, and the particle size is around 400 nm. The optical property of theas-synthesized product was analyzed, and the determined indirect bandgap value <I>E</I>g is 2.08 eV. The magneticproperty studies of truncated hexagonal bipyramid hematite particleshave shown that this kind of α-Fe2O3 possessa weak ferromagnetism under the <I>T</I>M, andthe saturation points do not reach up to the maximum applied magneticfield. Text Extraction in HIS Color Space by Weighting Scheme
Le, Thi Khue Van,Lee, Gueesang THE KOREAN INSTITUTE OF SMART MEDIA 2013 스마트미디어저널 Vol.2 No.1
A robust and efficient text extraction is very important for an accuracy of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) systems. Natural scene images with degradations such as uneven illumination, perspective distortion, complex background and multi color text give many challenges to computer vision task, especially in text extraction. In this paper, we propose a method for extraction of the text in signboard images based on a combination of mean shift algorithm and weighting scheme of hue and saturation in HSI color space for clustering algorithm. The number of clusters is determined automatically by mean shift-based density estimation, in which local clusters are estimated by repeatedly searching for higher density points in feature vector space. Weighting scheme of hue and saturation is used for formulation a new distance measure in cylindrical coordinate for text extraction. The obtained experimental results through various natural scene images are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.
