In this study, the variation of water quality was analyzed for six sites in major tributaries of the Nakdong River Basin. Standard-FDC (Flow Duration Curve) was developed using PM (Percentile Method), one of the statistical FDC estimation methods. The LDC (Load Duration Curve) was obtained using the developed FDC. The current method and the LDC evaluation method were compared and analyzed to evaluate the achievement of TWQ (Target Water Quality). Regarding the monthly flow rate variation, the five sites showed the distribution of the lowest flow rate between May and June, indicating a high probability of dry weathering of the streams. The variation of water quality confirmed the vulnerable timing of flow rate in each site, and it is therefore deemed necessary to plan to reduce T-P and TOC. A comparison and evaluation of TWQ showed that there was a difference between the TWQ values achieved by the two techniques. In addition, the margin ratio to the 50% excess ratio can be found in the LDC evaluation. The results of the LDC evaluation by section and by month showed whether or not the water quality was exceeded by flow conditions, along with the vulnerable sections and timing. Accordingly, it is judged that this method can be used for water quality management in TMDLs (Total Maximum Daily Loads).
Hybrid Control System for Managing Voltage and Reactive Power in the JEJU Power System
Sangsoo Seo,Yun-Hyuk Choi,Sang-Gyun Kang,Byongjun Lee,Jeong-Hoon Shin,Tae-Kyun Kim 대한전기학회 2009 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.4 No.4
This paper proposes a hybrid voltage controller based on a hierarchical control structure for implementation in the Jeju power system. The hybrid voltage controller utilizes the coordination of various reactive power devices such as generators, switched shunt devices and LTC to regulate the pilot voltage of an area or zone. The reactive power source can be classified into two groups based on action characteristics, namely continuous and discrete. The controller, which regulates the pilot bus voltage, reflects these characteristics in the coordination of the two types of reactive power source. However, the continuous type source like generators is a more important source than the discrete type for an emergency state such as a voltage collapse, thereby requiring a more reactive power reserve of the continuous type to be utilized in the coordination in order to regulate the pilot bus voltage. Results show that the hybrid controller, when compared to conventional methods, has a considerable improvement in performance when adopted to control the pilot bus voltage of the Jeju island system.

Background/Aims: Several noninvasive scoring systems have been developed to determine the risk of advanced fibrosis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We examined the diagnostic accuracy of the fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) score and NAFLD fibrosis score (NFS) in patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD. Methods: For this meta-analysis, various databases including PubMed (MEDLINE), EMBASE, OVID Medline and the Cochrane Library were systematically searched. After the acquired abstracts were reviewed by two investigators, manuscripts were chosen for a full-text examination. Results: Thirty-six studies evaluating biopsy-proven NAFLD were selected for meta-analysis. A total of 14,992 patients were analyzed. The lower cutoff sensitivity of the FIB-4 score predicting histological fibrosis stage 3 or more (≥F3) was 69%, with specificity of 64%, positive likelihood ratio (LR+) of 1.96, and negative likelihood ratio (LR-) of 0.47. The low baseline sensitivity of the NFS score predicting ≥F3 was 70%, with a specificity of 61%, LR+ of 1.83, and LR- of 0.48. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) values of the FIB-4 score predicting ≥F3 and ≥F2 were 76% and 68%, respectively. The AUC values of the NFS score predicting ≥F3 and ≥F2 were 74% and 60%, respectively. Conclusions: The FIB-4 or NFS test can be used to predict the degree of liver fibrosis in NAFLD, and the diagnostic accuracy resulted as relatively high in fibrosis stages of F3 or higher. Kang, Hyung-Sik,Kim, Eun-Mi,Lee, Sanggyu,Yoon, Suk-Ran,Kawamura, Toshihiko,Lee, Young-Cheol,Kim, Sangsoo,Myung, Pyung-Keun,Wang, San Ming,Choi, Inpyo Elsevier 2005 Genomics Vol.86 No.5
<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Natural killer (NK) cells develop from hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in the bone marrow. To understand the molecular regulation of NK cell development, serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE) was applied to HSCs, NK precursor (pNK) cells, and mature NK cells (mNK) cultured without or with OP9 stromal cells. From 170,464 total individual tags from four SAGE libraries, 35,385 unique genes were identified. A set of genes was expressed in a stage-specific manner: 15 genes in HSCs, 30 genes in pNK cells, and 27 genes in mNK cells. Among them, lipoprotein lipase induced NK cell maturation and cytotoxic activity. Identification of genome-wide profiles of gene expression in different stages of NK cell development affords us a fundamental basis for defining the molecular network during NK cell development.</P>
Molecular phylogeny and geography of Korean medaka fish (Oryzias latipes).
Kang, Tae-Wook,Lee, Eun-Hye,Kim, Moo-Sang,Paik, Sang-Gi,Kim, Sangsoo,Kim, Chang-Bae Korean Society for Molecular Biology 2005 Molecules and cells Vol.20 No.1
<P>The phylogeny and geography of the medaka (Oryzias latipes) populations of Korea were investigated by analyzing sequence data for the mitochondrial control region. From the 41 haplotypes including 25 Korean haplotypes detected in 64 Korean specimens and data for the Japanese and Chinese populations, phylogenetic and nested clade analyses were executed to examine the phylogeny of haplogroups and the relation of the genetic architecture of the haplotypes to the historical geography of the Korean medaka fish. The analyses suggest that there are two very distinct lineages of Korean medaka, and that these result from reproductive isolation mechanisms due to geographic barriers. The southeastern lineage has experienced recent range expansion to the western region. The northwestern lineage, sister to Chinese populations, showed evidence of internal range expansion with shared haplotypes.</P>
CONSORF: a consensus prediction system for prokaryotic coding sequences.
Kang, Sungsoo,Yang, Sung-Jin,Kim, Sangsoo,Bhak, Jong Oxford University Press 2007 Bioinformatics Vol.23 No.22
<P>CONSORF is a fully automatic high-accuracy identification system that provides consensus prokaryotic CDS information. It first predicts the CDSs supported by consensus alignments. The alignments are derived from multiple genome-to-proteome comparisons with other prokaryotes using the FASTX program. Then, it fills the empty genomic regions with the CDSs supported by consensus ab initio predictions. From those consensus results, CONSORF provides prediction reliability scores, predicted frame-shifts, alternative start sites and best pair-wise match information against other prokaryotes. These results are easily accessed from a website.</P>
Comparison of Distributed and Parallel NGS Data Analysis Methods based on Cloud Computing
Kang, Hyungil,Kim, Sangsoo The Korea Contents Association 2018 International Journal of Contents Vol.14 No.1
With the rapid growth of genomic data, new requirements have emerged that are difficult to handle with big data storage and analysis techniques. Regardless of the size of an organization performing genomic data analysis, it is becoming increasingly difficult for an institution to build a computing environment for storing and analyzing genomic data. Recently, cloud computing has emerged as a computing environment that meets these new requirements. In this paper, we analyze and compare existing distributed and parallel NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) analysis based on cloud computing environment for future research.
Integration of Collaborative Analyses for Development of Embedded Control Software
Sangsoo Park,Kang Geun Shin,Shige Wang IEEE 2010 Proceedings of the Institute of Electrical and Ele Vol.98 No.4
<P>Model-based methodologies have been widely used to handle the increasing demand for rapid development of high-quality, real-time embedded control software. A key challenge in such model-based design is integration of various ¿collaborative¿ analysis methods to support the automation of the design process. Traditional analysis methods developed for analyzing specific system properties, however, are not designed for such integration, and thus cannot ensure that the information for the analysis will be provided at the design stage where the information is needed. Moreover, many traditional analysis methods depend heavily on complete and accurate design models which can only be applied to post-design verification and are unavailable for automation of the design process involving an early design stage, where implementation details are unknown. This challenge can be met by integrating analysis methods with the design process. We have developed such a framework combined with software modeling, execution platform configuration, and run-time monitoring mechanisms to enable accurate assessment of embedded software quality at early design stages. We have implemented and demonstrated the framework with a toolkit, called AIRES, that integrates software models, a virtual execution platform, and timing and schedulability analysis methods.</P>

This paper proposes a methodology using a tool based on the branch-parameter continuation power flow (BCPF) in order to restore the power flow solvability in unsolvable contingencies. A specified contingency from a set of transmission line contingencies is modeled, considering the transient analysis and practice in the Korean power system. This tool traces a solution path that satisfies the power flow equations with respect to the variation of the branch parameter. At a critical point, in which the branch parameter can move on to a maximum value, a sensitivity analysis with a normal vector is performed to identify the most effective compensation. With the sensitivity information, the location of the reactive power compensation is determined and the effectiveness of the sensitivity information is verified to restore the solvability. In the simulation, the proposed framework is then applied to the Korean power system.

This paper presents a comparison of communication performance between the reconfigurable beam-steering antenna and the omni-directional (loop) antenna during standstill and walking motion. Both omni-directional and reconfigurable antennas were manufactured on the same fabric (?? ?狼哲慄? 炚뽄???司哲司? substrate and operated around 5 GHz band. The reconfigurable antenna was designed to steer the beam directions. To implement the beam-steering capability, the antenna used two PIN diodes. The measured peak gains were 5.9?6.6 dBi and the overall half power beam width (HPBW) was 102°. In order to compare the communication efficiency, both the bit error rate (BER) and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) were measured using a GNU Radio Companion software tool and user software radio peripheral (USRP) devices. The measurement were performed when both antennas were standstill and walking motion in an antenna chamber as well as in a smart home environment. From these results, the performances of the reconfigurable beam steering antenna outperformed that of the loop antenna. In addition, in terms of communication efficiencies, in an antenna chamber was better than in a smart home environment. In terms of movement of antennas, standstill state has better results than walking motion state.
