        Fast kinetics and high adsorption capacity of green extract capped superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles for the adsorption of Ni(II) ions

        Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized using co-precipitation technique by dissolving required stoichiometric proportions (1:2) of Fe2+ and Fe3+ salts in water. Lantana camara extract and ammonia solution were used as the stabilizing and precipitating agents, respectively. The prepared particles were characterized using FTIR, TGA, PSA, SEM–EDAX and zeta potential analysis. This material was successfully adopted for the removal of Ni(II) ions from aqueous solution and the process parameters were optimized. The results indicated the faster kinetics and a remarkably higher adsorption capacity of 227.20 mg/g at a pH of 6.0 and an adsorbent dose of 0.05 g.

      • Women Empowerment Strategies in Women’s Bureau (WBSL) Programme

        여성의 권리신장은 지구촌 빈곤을 뿌리 뽑는 데 유용한 전략적 발전 모델이다. 이 연구는 스리랑카 여성국에서 실시한 프로그램에 참여한 여성들을 대상으로 진행하였다. 스리랑카 서부에 위치한 감파 지역(Gampaha DS)을 중심으로 200여 명의 연구대상자를 선정, 설문지를 배포하는 한편, 양적 연구결과를 보다 심층 보완하기 위하여 질적 연구를 병행하였다. 질적 연구를 위해 소집단 토론 및 25명의 프로그램 진행 공무원들을 집중 인터뷰 하였다. 본 연구결과, 스리랑카에서 시행되고 있는 여성을 위한 프로그램들은 사회적, 정치적, 법적 측면에서 여성 권리신장에 의미 있는 영향을 보여주지 못하고 있음이 나타났다. 여성의 권리를 신장하는 일은 많은 사회적 장애가 존재하고 있음이 나타났고, 현재 진행되고 있는 스리랑카 여성국의 프로그램들은 수정 보완될 필요가 있음을 보여주고 있다. 따라서 이 연구는 스리랑카 여성국 프로그램에 새마을 운동의 성공요인을 접목하는 방안을 제시하고자 하였다. Women empowerment is a crucial strategic development model utilized in eradicating global poverty. This study is based on “Women Empowerment Strategies in Sri Lanka: Focusing on participants in Women’s Bureau of Sri Lanka (‘WBSL’) Programme”. The selected area is Gampaha DS division located in Gampaha District, Western province in Sri Lanka. Quantitative and qualitative methods have been used as data collecting methods. Quantitative data was gathered via interviews based on questionnaires issued to a sample group of two hundred (200) women. Qualitative data was collected from focal group discussions (FGD) and interviews with 25 officers of the WBSL programme. The study revealed that the existing strategies do not have a significant association with women empowerment; particularly the aspects of social, political and legal strategies. The economic and domestic dimensions of these strategies have positive relationships with empowerment. The empowerment mechanism was overwhelmed with a number of hindrances and drawbacks. Therefore, based on the empirical results, the existing strategies and activities of the WBSL programme should be reviewed and revised accordingly. The study attempted to identify, modify and adapt a pathway for the WBSL programme by utilizing the success factors of Saemaul Undong (‘SMU’) with the outcome being relevant for policy makers and development agencies. The aim is to enhance the status of women through women empowerment processes and programmes by adapting SMU Women development strategies.

        Dung preference and trophic association of dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) in the moist forests of the South-western Ghats of the Indian subcontinent

        First quantitative dung beetle-feeding trophic network analysis for the Oriental region is carried out by inves tigating trophic network interaction between dung beetles and mammal dung types in the moist forests of the Western Ghats a global biodiversity hot spot in south-western India. Dung-beetle assemblage associated with the dung of the prominent mammals, such as the macaque, boar, gaur, elephant and deer, showed differences in richness, abundance and composition among different dung types. Most dung beetles were generalists with low resource specificity and community-wide generalist feeding on herbivore and omnivore dung types. Dung beetles in the region displayed high species richness and abundance in boar dung. The high attraction and specificity of dung beetles towards the odoriferous boar dung indicate that the omnivore mammal Sus scrofa has a major role in maintaining the dung beetle community in the forests of the Western Ghats. Network interaction analysis shows that the vast majority in the assemblage are generalist species, and the few specialist species were all with low abundance. Low overall specialisation and low resource partitioning with high species richness is recorded in the assemblage. The assemblage’s trophic level preference is reflected in the high dung specificity recorded in the omnivore and herbivore dung types.

        Transport, structural and thermal studies on nanocomposite polymer blend electrolytes for Li-ion battery applications

        Nanocomposite polymer electrolytes (NCPEs) composed of poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene)(PVdF-co-HFP) as a host polymer, Poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) as an additive, Ethylene Carbonate (EC) as a plasticizer, Lithium Perchlorate as dopant salt and Barium Titanate (BaTiO3) as a filler were prepared for various concentrations of BaTiO3 using solvent casting technique. Thermal stability of the sample having maximum ionic conductivity was found using TG/DTA analysis. Nano composite polymer electrolytes were subjected to ac impedance analysis spectra for acquiring the ionic conductivity values at different temperature. Surface structure of the sample was analysed using scanning electron microscope and the complexations of samples were analysed using X-ray diffraction analysis. It was noted that the polymer electrolyte contains 8 wt. % of BaTiO3 showed maximumionic conductivity than the other ratios of BaTiO3.

        Germplasm innovation for high-temperature tolerance from traditional rice accessions of Kerala using genetic variability, genetic advance, path coefficient analysis and principal component analysis

        Ninety landraces of rice were evaluated for various physio-morphological traits in completely randomized design with two treatment levels, i.e. control and high-temperature stress (3–5 °C) more than the ambient condition with three replications each. The high-temperature stress was induced from panicle initiation to maturity stage by keeping the pots in a temperaturecontrolled green house facility. High values of genotypic coefcient of variability, phenotypic coefcient of variability, heritability and genetic advance were found for the traits number of unflled grains/panicle and number of flled grains/ panicle, indicating the pre-ponderance of additive gene action and, therefore, scope for improvement of the trait through selection. Four principle components were depicted having Eigen value>1 and cumulative variation of 59.84%. Based on the performances of various physio-morphological traits under control and heat stress conditions, we were able to identify Karuthacheera, LN-9956-Vellakaravala (Pavumba) and Pokkali white were recorded the highest number of fertile grains under high temperature.
