Evaluation of Urinary Nitrogen Excretion from Plasma Urea Nitrogen in Dry and Lactating Cows
Kume, S.,Numata, K.,Takeya, Y,Miyagawa, Y,Ikeda, S.,Kitagawa, M.,Nonaka, K.,Oshita, T.,Kozakai, T. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2008 Animal Bioscience Vol.21 No.8
Data of 42 balance measurements from dry and lactating Holstein cows and blood and urine samples from 24 Japanese Black cows were collected to evaluate the potential for predicting urinary nitrogen (N) excretion from plasma urea nitrogen (PUN). Similar positive correlations were obtained between N intake and apparent N absorption in dry and lactating cows. The regression equations of N intake on urinary N excretion varied in dry and lactating cows, and the difference of urinary N excretion between dry and lactating cows was due to the N secretion into milk. Highly positive correlations were observed between urinary N contents and urinary urea N in Japanese Black cows, and urinary urea N increased with increasing PUN. There were positive correlations between N intake and PUN in dry and lactating cows, but PUN and urinary N excretion in lactating cows were higher than in dry cows. There were positive correlations between PUN and urinary N excretion per BW in dry and lactating cows. Although urinary N excretion could be calculated as (N clearance rate of kidneys)PUNBW, high N clearance rate of kidneys, such as 2.08 L/d/kg BW, may be suitable to calculate urinary N excretion in lactating cows, compared with 1.33 L/d/kg BW in dry cows.
Numerical simulation of cavitation surge and vortical flows in a diffuser with swirling flow

The strong swirling flow at the exit of the runner of a Francis turbine at part load causes flow instabilities and cavitation surges in the draft tube, deteriorating the performance of the hydraulic power system. The unsteady cavitating turbulent flow in the draft tube is simplified and modeled by a diffuser with swirling flow using the Scale-adaptive simulation method. Unsteady characteristics of the vortex rope structure and the underlying mechanisms for the interactions between the cavitation and the vortices are both revealed. The generation and evolution of the vortex rope structures are demonstrated with the help of the iso-surfaces of the vapor volume fraction and the Qcriterion. Analysis based on the vorticity transport equation suggests that the vortex dilatation term is much larger along the cavity interface in the diffuser inlet and modifies the vorticity field in regions with high density and pressure gradients. The present work is validated by comparing two types of cavitation surges observed experimentally in the literature with further interpretations based on simulations.

Total column ozone (TCO) amounts observed by the Dobson spectrophotometer from 1985 to 2008 in Seoul and vertical ozone profiles obtained with the ozonesonde from 1995 to 2007 in Pohang were used to investigate the relationship between the occurrence of Secondary Ozone Peak (SOP) in the Upper Troposphere/Lower Stratosphere (UT/LS) layer and the enhancement in TCO over the Korean Peninsula. Based on Hybrid Single-Particle, Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) simulations, the advection of a northern mid-latitudinal ozone-rich airmass from the northwest is closely related to SOP occurrences, which consequently lead to enhancements in the amount of ozone in both the UT/LS and the total column at stations in Korea. In addition, both the frequency of the northwesterly advection and the northern mid-latitudinal ozone amount are revealed to affect the amount of ozone in the UT/LS and total column by up to 7 DU. The relationship between the SOP occurrence frequency and the long-term TCO trend was investigated with observed data collected in all seasons. The UT/LS ozone enhancements, which are largely affected by SOP occurrences, are considered to be positively related to the TCO trend from 1985 to 2008 over the Korean Peninsula.
