During the period of 97 day s from June 4, 1974 to September 8, 1974, an experiment had been carried out at College of Agriculture, Korea University to compare effects on the feed consumption, body gain, efficiency of feed utilization and blood composition of growing rabbits that were fed with the experimental ration. In the experiment, 30 heads of 35-45 days-old rabbit were divided into 4 lots; levels of 0.0% (the control lot), 0.2% (A), 0.6% (B), 1.0% (C) NaCl were mixed with the experimental ration. The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. In the feed consumption, no significant difference was obtained among A, B and C lots, but the feed consumption of B lot was increased much more than that of the otter lots. The results of control lot showed, however, statistically significant difference from any of other experimental lots at 5% probability level. 2. In the body gain, significant difference (p$lt;0.05) was obtained between control and the other lots. Though no significant difference was obtained from A, B and C lots, the body gain of B lot was higher than that of the other lots. 3. In the feed efficiency no significant difference was obtained in each four lots, but B lot was heigher than that of other treatment lots on the efficiency of feed utilization. 4. In the analysis of blood, the amount of blood total protein was 4.97㎎% in control lot, and the average amount of the other experimental lots was 5.72㎎%. Control of was less than the other experimental lots in amount of blood total protein, and no significant difference was showed through all the experimental lots. Amount of hematocrit was 26.67㎎% in control lot, average 34.33㎎% in the other experimental lots. From the hematocrit contents of the control and other experimental lots, no significant difference was obtained at 5% probability level. In rabbits, the content of blood serum albumin was 4㎎%, blood serum sodium 165.25mEq/l, blood serum potassium 6.45mEq/l. Statistically, through all lots including the control lot no significant difference was obtained in the contents of blood serum albumin, blood serum sodium and serum potassium.

The silver fox. a seasonal breeder of great economic importance, has a low reproductive efficiency in Korea. This study was carried out to obtain the basic data about the reproductive physiology of the silver fox being raised in Korea. A total of 135 litter in 1987, of which 83 were raised at Taekwanryung (N: 38.5°, E:128.8°),52 were at Yangsan (N:35.5°, E:129.0°), were used for this study. The vixens breeding started on January 27 and continued until March 25. The mode and mean was March 5 with an standard deviation of 18 days for vixens raised at Taekwanryung, while the breeding of vixens raised at Yangsan began February 16 with a standard deviation of 11 days. The mean date for mating of yearling was about a fortnight later them that of vixens of two and more than two of age which were all raised in two areas. The linear model was used to measure the effect of raising region, parity and the date of mating on litter size. The mean litters were 4.78±0.14 kits. The difference in litter size among 2 raising area, 2 parities and 4 dates of mating was not significant. However, the vixens raised in southern area, having the first parity and mating between March 1 and March 15 had more kits per litter than in the northern area, the 2nd parity and the other dates of mating.

Twenty-four male minks reared in Taekwalryung area were used to establish spermatogenic activity occurring prior to breeding season from October to March next year. Changes in testes morphology, spermatogenic cells, cell differentiation and appearance of spermatids in the seminiferous tubules were examined using cytochemical, biological and biochemical methods. The size and weight for testes gradually increased regardless of sharp decrease in body weight from October to March. In particular, the testis weight increased sharply from December to March. The overall ratio of testis to body weight increased upto 12 folds during 6 months. Cytochemical analysis using PAS staining demonstrated that acrosome in spermatids fully developed in January. Viable spermatozoa appeared in caudal region from February anti March, at concentrations of 2.3-3.8×10^7/㎖ and 5×10^7/㎖, respectively although spermatozoa appeared in caput of epididymis. Finally, electrophoretic analysis showed that biochemical changes also occurred in the lumen of each microenvironment of spermatogenesis. The results should be useful for selection of male mink in reproductive performance and breeding programme.

Biological activities of somatic cells during oocyte maturation have not been well established in domestic animals. Synthesized polypeptides were examined using [^(14)C]-leucine to establish stage-specific activity in cumulus cells during bovine oocyte maturation in vitro. A stable culture system was used to demonstrate oocyte maturation both in oocyte nucleus and cumulus oophorus. Total 370 of tightly enclosed oocytes with cumulus cells (OOCs) were cultured in TCM 199 containing IS% fetal calf serum. 10 IU PMS/㎖ and 10 IU hCG/㎖ for 24 h at 39 C in an atmosphere 5% CO₂ in air. Cumulus expansion occurred at the end of culture and meta-phase II chromosomes were also found in 80% of the oocytes. In the system only 14% of oocytes with germinal vesicle were found at 12 h of maturation. Cumulus cell separated from the maturing OCCs demonstrated active synthetic activity as indicated by the protein pattern on autoradiograph. This results demonstrate that the cumulus cells not only expand morphologically but synthesize proteins which may be used for cumulus cells for themselves and secreted during oocyte maturation.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate effect of a single intrauterine infusion of semen or seminal plasma at estrus before mating on subsequent litter traits of crossbred gilts. In addition, presence and level of early pregnancy factor activity (rosette inhibition titre, RITZ in serum of treated gifts and in vitro immunosuppressive activity of these antigens from boars used were tested immunologically to support the results in this experiment. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Semen-infused gifts significantly had a larger litter size (11.4) at birth than controls (9.6), but no significant differences were detected between others. 2. There was a tendency toward increased total pigs born alive, litter weight at birth and number of pigs suckling in antigen-infused gifts, but the differences between treated-gifts and controls were not statistically significant. 3. EPF activity (RIT) before and after mating in previously infused-gifts was 10.7±2.8 in the serum of nonpregnant gifts and 19.3±3.8 in the serum of pregnant gifts. RIT $gt; 14 could be considered evidence of presence of EPF in pregnant gifts. 4. Seminal plasma infusion before mating induced on obvious rise of RIT. RIT at 24 h and 48 h after mating was much higher (18-23 and 21-22) :in semen-and seminal plasma-infused gifts than in controls. RIT at 24 h after mating was found to be positively correlated (r=0.84) to litter size born in 6 gifts. 5. Dialyzed seminal plasma from 4 boars was significantly immunosuppressive at a concentration of 500 ㎍/㎖ than controls and degree of immunosuppression varied among individuals when the concentrations was under 500 ㎍/㎖. Undialyzed semen samples from 3 boars resulted in loss of immunosuppressive activity. These results indicate that infusion of gifts with semen at estrus before mating can be improved reproductive efficiency because of more litter size at birth and sukling pigs than controls and that these antigens had immunosuppressive potential of antilymphocyte serum and immunosuppressive activity to porcine lymphocytes that generate an immune response.
