Background The biological clock allows an organism to anticipate periodic environmental changes and adjust its physiology and behavior accordingly. Objective This retrospective cross-sectional study examined circadian gene polymorphisms and clinical characteristics associated with insulin resistance (IR). Methods We analyzed data from 1,404 Korean adults aged 30 to 55 with no history of cancer and cardio-cerebrovascular disease. The population was classified according to sex and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) values. Demographics, anthropometric and clinical characteristics, and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were analyzed with respect to sex, age, and HOMA-IR values. We used association rule mining to identify sets of SNPs from circadian and metabolic sensing genes that may be associated with IR. Results Among the subjects, 15.0% of 960 women and 24.3% of 444 men had HOMA-IR values above 2. Most of the parameters differed significantly between men and women, as well as between the groups with high and low insulin sensitivity. Body fat mass of the trunk, which was significantly higher in insulin-resistant groups, had a higher correlation with high sensitivity C-reactive protein and hemoglobin levels in women, and alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels in men. Homozygous minor allele genotype sets of SNPs rs17031578 and rs228669 in the PER3 gene could be more frequently found among women with HOMA-IR values above 2 (p = .014). Conclusion Oxidative stress enhanced by adiposity and iron overload, which may also be linked to NRF2 and PER3-related pathways, is related to IR in adulthood. However, due to the small population size in this study, more research is needed.
On the Pareto-Optimal Beam Structure and Design for Multi-User MIMO Interference Channels
Juho Park,Youngchul Sung IEEE 2013 IEEE transactions on signal processing Vol.61 No.23

In this paper, the Pareto-optimal beam structure for multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channels is investigated and a necessary condition for any Pareto-optimal transmit signal covariance matrix is presented for the K-pair Gaussian MIMO interference channel. It is shown that any Pareto-optimal transmit signal covariance matrix at a transmitter should have its column space contained in the union of the signal spaces of the channel matrices from the transmitter to all receivers. Based on this necessary condition, an efficient parameterization for the beam search space is proposed. The proposed parameterization is given by the product manifold of a Stiefel manifold and a subset of a hyperplane and enables us to construct an efficient beam design algorithm by exploiting its rich geometrical structure and existing tools for optimization on Stiefel manifolds. Reduction in the beam search space dimension and computational complexity by the proposed parameterization and the proposed beam design approach is significant when the number of transmit antennas is much larger than the sum of the numbers of receive antennas, as in upcoming cellular networks adopting massive MIMO technologies. Numerical results validate the proposed parameterization and the proposed cooperative beam design method based on the proposed parameterization for MIMO interference channels.

In this paper, coordinated beamforming based on relaxed zero forcing (RZF) for transmitter-receiver pair multiple-input single-output (MISO) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channels is considered. In the RZF coordinated beamforming, conventional zero-forcing interference leakage constraints are relaxed so that some predetermined interference leakage to undesired receivers is allowed in order to increase the beam design space for larger rates than those of the zero-forcing (ZF) scheme or to make beam design feasible when ZF is impossible. In the MISO case, it is shown that the rate-maximizing beam vector under the RZF framework for a given set of interference leakage levels can be obtained by sequential orthogonal projection combining (SOPC). Based on this, exact and approximate closed-form solutions are provided in two-user and three-user cases, respectively, and an efficient beam design algorithm for RZF coordinated beamforming is provided in general cases. Furthermore, the rate control problem under the RZF framework is considered. A centralized approach and a distributed heuristic approach are proposed to control the position of the designed rate-tuple in the achievable rate region. Finally, the RZF framework is extended to MIMO interference channels by deriving a new lower bound on the rate of each user.

Abstract

Sandwich structures of HB400 armor steel and aluminum foam subject to buried mine blast were numerically and experimentally studied in this work. To be used in the FEM simulation model, the dynamic material properties of HB400 at high strain rates were characterized. The quasi-static compression tests of the aluminum foam were also performed to obtain its material properties. In order to characterize the behavior of HB400 armor steel and Al foam under mine explosion, TNT mine blast experiments and investigated the real time deformation and failures of the specimens. From the test results, we found that the aluminum foam core significantly reduce the maximum deflection and z-acceleration by absorbing blast impact energy. In our numerical analyses of the sandwich structure under landmine explosion, it is found that both of the CONWEP and CONWEP–JWL coupling techniques are applicable to the mine blast simulation; however, the enhanced blast pressure from the buried explosives should be considered by a scale factor of 2.3 comparing with the experiments.
