        Taking Gender Seriously : Feminization of Nonstandard Work in Korea and Japan

        This paper analyzes the nature and challenges of growing nonstandard employment in Korea and Japan through the lens of gender. Among the OECD countries, Korea and Japan represent the worst cases of gender gaps in employment, and have very high rates of female workers in nonstandard employment. Based on an analytical framework, whereby national differences in the gendered nature of nonstandard work can be investigated, this study compares feminization of nonstandard work in Korea and Japan and makes the following three conclusions of practical importance. First, social policies designed to help workers to balance work and family must be accompanied by legislation that regulates nonstandard work. Second, a coordinated industrial relations' system is necessary to properly implement legislative efforts. Finally, the trade union movements in both Korea and Japan must improve their representative functions for women workers.

        한국 원림(園林)의 은사문화(隱士文化)와 공간적 상징

        (연구배경 및 목적) 한국의 은사문화는 원림이라는 건축형태를 생성하였다. 자연 속에 독립적으로 존재하며 최소한의 인공으로 건설된 원림은, 주변의 자연물을 적극적으로 수용하였다. 공간 안에서 중요한 위치를 차지하게 된 자연물은 선비들에 의해 특별한 의미가 부여되었다. 이름이 지어지고 시의 주제가 된 자연물은 선비들의 관념과 사상을 표출하는 상징적 매개체로서 존재한다. 그러므로 자연물에 부여된 이름과 그에 해당하는 시를 이해한다면, 원림의 공간적 상징체계를 이해하는 새로운 기준을 마련할 수 있을 것이다. (연구방법) 원림을 이해하기 위하여, 한국 은사문화의 발생과 역사적 배경을 파악한다. 원림의 공간과 자연물을 주제로 한 시들을 해석하고 이해하기 위한 연구를 진행한다. 더불어 원림 공간의 답사를 통하여 사진 촬영과 도면 작성의 과정을 거친다. 시에 언급된 공간들을 직접 확인하는 과정에서, 선비들의 관념과 사상이 자연물에 투영되어 상징적으로 표출되고 있음을 확인한다. 자연물을 나무, 돌, 물, 꽃 등의 분류로 정리하여 각각의 공간적 상징체계를 분석한다. (결과) 한국의 은사들은 원림을 구성하는 나무, 돌, 물, 꽃 등을 통하여 자신의 관념과 사상을 상징적으로 드러내었다. 시적 표현을 통하여 전승되어진 그 의미는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국 원림의 은사들은 원림의 공간 안에 존재하는 자연물에 빗대어, 은둔에 대한 지향을 상징적으로 표현하였다. 둘째, 은사들은 군자로서의 삶의 지향을 상징적으로 드러내기 위하여, 원림의 자연물을 적극적으로 활용하였다. 셋째, 한국 원림의 공간에 존재하는 자연물은 신선세계나 이상세계 등을 상징하는 매개체로서 존재한다. (결론) 한국 은사문화의 물리적 배경으로서 존재하는 원림은, 은사들의 관념과 철학을 드러내는 상징으로 가득 차 있다. 원림을 구성하는 자연물에게 선비들이 부여한 이름과 시는 선비들의 사상을 상징적으로 표현하며 후대에 남았다. 이를 해석하고 이해하려는 노력은, 원림에서 은사문화를 향유한 선비들의 관념과 건축적 의도를 알아가기 위한 중요한 과정으로서의 의의를 가지며, 우리의 정체성을 확인하기 위한 기반이 될 것이라 확신한다. (Background and Purpose) In Korea, the culture of being among scholars gave rise to an architectural form known as wonlim. Wonlim, which existed independently in nature and was constructed with minimal artificiality, actively embraced surrounding natural objects. Natural objects that occupied an important position in space were given special meaning by the scholars. Natural objects were named and used as the subjects of poetry, and became a symbolic medium to express the ideas and thoughts of scholars. Therefore, if you understand the names given to natural objects and their corresponding poems, we will be able to set new standards for understanding the spatial symbolic system of wonlim. (Method) To understand wonlim, I grasp the occurrence and historical background of the culture of seclusive scholars in Korea. Moreover, I conducted research to interpret and understand poetry with the theme of space and natural objects in wonlim. In addition, through the exploration of the space in wonlims, I went through the process of taking pictures and drawing floor plans. In the process of directly checking the spaces mentioned in the poem, it is confirmed that the ideas and thoughts of the scholars are projected onto natural objects and expressed symbolically. Natural objects are organized into categories such as trees, stones, water, and flowers, and each spatial symbol system is analyzed. (Results) Korean scholars have symbolically expressed their ideas and thoughts through trees, stones, water, and flowers that make up wonlim. The meaning, transmitted through poetic expression, is as follows: First, seclusive scholars of wonlim in Korea symbolized the intention of seclusion in comparison to natural objects existing in the space of wonlim. Second, to symbolize the intention of life as a novel man, seclusive scholars actively used natural objects of wonlim. Third, natural objects existing in the space of the Korean wonlim served as a medium symbolizing the Taoist or ideal world. (Conclusions) The wonlim, which exists as the physical background of the culture of seclusive scholars in Korea, is full of symbols that reveal the ideas and philosophy of seclusive scholars. The names and poems given by scholars to natural objects that make up wonlim are symbolic expressions of the scholars’ ideas and will remain in future generations. I am convinced that the efforts to interpret and understand this will have significance as an important process for understanding the ideas and architectural intentions of scholars who have enjoyed the seclusive scholars’ culture in wonlim and will serve as the basis for confirming our identity.

        Seasonal Fluctuation of Freezing Tolerance and Soluble Sugar Content in Three Sweet Persimmon Cultivars

        Sweet persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) exhibits insufficient freezing tolerance (FT) in comparison with other temperate fruit trees. Information about FT of sweet persimmon is scarce. In this study, FT was analyzed in three sweet persimmons cultivars, ‘Fuyu’, ‘Taishuu’, and ‘Romang’, using an electrolyte leakage method for two successive years (Year 1, November 2017 to April 2018; Year 2, November 2018 to April 2019). Current-year shoot samples from 8-year-old sweet persimmon trees of each cultivar were collected to analyze FT in an experimental orchard (Pear Research Station, Naju, Korea). Average daily air temperatures increasingly declined from November 2017, reaching the minimum in mid-January 2018. They then steadily increased until April 2018 (Year 1). Patterns of average daily air temperatures of Year 2 were similar to those of Year 1 except that they reached the minimum at the end of December 2018. FT of the three cultivars constantly increased during cold acclimation (from November to January), whereas FT decreased during deacclimation (from February to April) for both years. Shoot samples (from Year 2) of the most freezing-tolerant ‘Romang’ and the most freezing-susceptible ‘Taishuu’ were used for soluble sugar analysis with HPLC. In both ‘Taishuu’ and ‘Romang’, total soluble sugar content was the highest in December 2018 and started to decrease from January 2019 until April 2019. Fructose and glucose contents showed the same pattern as total soluble sugar. Meanwhile, sucrose and maltose of ‘Taishuu’ and ‘Romang’ were detected minimally throughout the whole experimental period. These results indicated that fluctuations of total soluble sugar, fructose, and glucose contents paralleled FT of the three cultivars (p < 0.001).

        Establishing a colorectal cancer liver metastasis patientderived tumor xenograft model for the evaluation of personalized chemotherapy

        Purpose: In order to suggest optimal anticancer drugs for patient-tailored chemotherapy, we developed a colorectal cancer (CRC)-liver metastasis patient-derived tumor xenograft (PDTX) model. Methods: Tissue obtained from a patient with CRC-liver metastasis (F0) was transplanted in a nonobese female mouse with diabetic/severe combined immune deficiency (F1) and the tumor tissue was retransplanted into nude mice (F2). When tumor volumes reached ~500 mm3, the F2 mice were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 4/group) of doxorubicin, cisplatin, docetaxel, and nontreated control groups. The tumor tissues were investigated using H&E staining, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling assays, and immunohistochemistry. To determine where the mutant allele frequencies varied across the different passages, we isolated genomic DNA from the primary tumor, liver metastasis, and PDTX models (F1/F2). Results: The physiological properties of the tumor were in accord with those of the patient’s tumors. Anticancer drugs delayed tumor growth, inhibited proliferation, and caused apoptosis. Histological assessments revealed no observable heterogeneity among the intragenerational PDTX models. Target exon sequencing analysis without high-quality filter conditions revealed some genetic variations in the 83 cancer-related genes across the generations. However, when de novo mutations were defined as a total count of zero in F0 and ≥5 in F2, exactly prognostic impact of clone cancer profiling (EGFR, KRAS, BRAF, PIK3CA, NRAS, APC and TP53) were detected in the paired. Conclusion: A CRC liver metastasis PDTX model was established for the evaluation of chemotherapeutic efficacy. This model retained the physiological characters of the patient tumors and potentially provides a powerful means of assessing chemotherapeutic efficacy.

        Effect of corn gluten and its hydrolysate consumptions on weight reduction in rats fed a high-fat diet

        This study examined the effects of corn gluten (CG) and its hydrolysate consumptions on weight reduction in rats fed a high-fat diet. Eight-month-old male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=40) were fed a high-fat diet (40% calorie as fat) for 4 weeks. They were then randomly divided into four groups and fed the isocaloric diets with different protein sources for 8 weeks. The protein sources were casein (control group), intact CG (CG group), CG hydrolysate A (CGHA group, 30% of protein as peptides and 70% as free amino acids) and CG hydrolysate P (CGHP group, 93% of protein as peptides and 7% as free amino acids). Body weight gain, adipose tissue weights, nitrogen balance, absorptions of energy, protein and fat, lipid profiles in plasma, liver and feces and hepatic activities of carnitine palmitoyl transferase (CPT), fatty acid synthase (FAS), malic enzyme (ME) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) were assessed. The CGHA diet had the highest amount of BCAAs, especially leucine, and most of them existed as free amino acid forms. The CGHA group showed significant weight reduction and negative nitrogen balance. Protein absorption and apparent protein digestibility in the CGHA group were significantly lower than those in other groups. Adipose tissue weights were the lowest in the CGHA group. Activity of CPT tended to be higher in the CGHA group than in other groups and those of FAS, ME and G6PDH were significantly lower in the CGHA group than in other groups. In conclusion, the CGHA diet which had relatively high amounts of free amino acids and BCAAs, especially leucine, had a weight reduction effect by lowering adipose tissue weight and the activities of FAS, ME and G6PDH in experimental animals, but it seemed to be a negative result induced by lowering protein absorption, increasing urinary nitrogen excretion and protein catabolism.

        “Municipal Corporatism” and Worker Representation on Boards of Directors in Seoul City

        전국 수준 사회적 대화가 약화하던 시기, 서울시는 2016년에 노동이사제를 도입하는 등 공공부문 노동자들과 강력한 파트너십을 구축하였다. 이 연구에서는 중앙정부 차원의 법률적 뒷받침이 없는 상황에서 지방정부가 도입한 노동이사제의 한계와 딜레마 상황에 주목하여 서울시의 지방정부 코포라티즘 메커니즘과 그 효과를 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위해 우리는 노동조합 활동가, 서울시 공공기관 이사, 서울시 관계자, 전문가 등과 심층 면접을 하였고, 노동조합과 서울시의 문서자료를 분석하였다. 서울시 노동정책 추진모델인 이른바 “서울모델”은 노동이사제를 포함한 다수의 진보적인 노동정책을 성공적으로 설계하고 집행한 것으로 평가된다. 하지만 불완전한 공공기관 지배구조, 기업 단위 분절적인 단체교섭 구조, 원치 않는 중앙 정부의 개입 때문에 서울시 공공기관 노동이사들은 심각한 역할 갈등에 직면해야 했다. 또한 “서울모델”은 선의를 가진 사용자로서의 서울시에 크게 의존하였고, 민간부문으로의 노동이사제 확대로 이어지지 못했기 때문에 부분적인 성공이라고 평가할 수 있다. 지방정부 코포라티즘은 노동자 대표의 이사회 참여를 가능하게 하는 데에는 기여하였지만, 전국 수준 코포라티즘 구조와 제도적 뒷받침이 없는 상태에서는 노동이사제 적용 범위와 지속가능성에 한계가 있을 수 있다는 점을 확인하였다. While social dialogue at the national level was withering away, the Seoul Metropolitan Government forged a strong partnership with public sector workers, introducing the worker director system in 2016. Using in-depth interviews with trade union leaders, directors on the boards, and bureaucrats, and primary and secondary sources from trade unions and the Seoul Metropolitan Government, this article investigates the mechanisms and effects of local corporatism in Seoul City, with particular attention to the limits and dilemmas of worker board representation introduced at the local level without proper legislative support at the national level. The “Seoul Model” successfully produced many progressive labor policies, including the worker board representation. However, because of the defective corporate governance, fragmented bargaining structure, and unwanted interference from the national government, worker directors in Seoul City’s public institutions and companies had to face severe role conflicts. The Seoul Model was only partially successful, because it was heavily dependent on Seoul City as a benevolent employer, and it failed to expand the worker director system into the private sector. Municipal Corporatism without corporatist structures at the national level can lead to worker board participation, but its scope and durability might be limited without proper institutional prerogatives at the national level.
