This study was done to investigate the effects of caffeine ingestion on the expression of GLUT-4 in rats' skeletal muscle(soleus m) and blood insulin level after 12 hr fasting condition and one hour treadmill running. Total 19 rats(Sprague-Dawley) who were 7week Did were used for experimental subjects and raised for 1week in the room controled the air temperature and relative humudity(22℃ and 50%). They were divided three groups ; 12hr fasting group(F group, n=5), fasting+exercise group(FE, n= 7) and fasting+caffeine+exercise group(FCE group, n=7). FG and FCE group performed treadmill running for one hour and the treadmill speed was 18m/min that was supposed to be moderate exercise to rats. Each Dr rats in FCE group was forced to he given the caffeine solution(5mg/kg, Sigma Chemical co.) through stainless steel tube directly to their stomachs one hour before treadmill exercise. Immediately after treadmill running, we anesthetized them with the mixed solution(Ketamin 80g/kg and Rompun 5ml/kg) to draw 3ml blood from heart four insulin analysis and then obtained the rats' soleus muscle for GLUT-4 expression. We found that FCE group showed significantly higher GLUT - expression then the other groups and FE group showed the lowest GLUT-4 expression. This rusults suggest that the endurance type of exercise in fasting condition inhibit the GLUT-4 expression in working muscle and the caffeine helped to facilitate the GLUT-4 expression during endurance type of exercise. The future studies needed to confirm the action of caffeine to increase the GLUT- 4 and the mechanism.

Background: To evaluate the efficacy of peri-urethral thrombin instillation at the surgical site after trans-urethral prostate surgery in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), with the objective of reducing post-operative hematuria and preserving voiding function. Methods: The study was retrospectively analyzed a total of 122 patients who had trans-urethral prostate surgery between January 2019 and March 2023. Among these, 33 received thrombin instillation, while 89 did not receive it. In the test group, a mixture of 5 cc of saline solution and 5,000 IU of thrombin was instilled below the balloon, targeting the surgical site by inserting a 5 Fr feeding tube along with the Foley catheter. We compared hematologic data and uroflowmetry (UFM) between pre and post-operative periods, the duration of continuous bladder irrigation (CBI) and Foley catheter indwelling period. Results: The mean age and prostate size in the test group were 71.52±7.15 years and 54.05±24.73 g, while 71.38±8.22 years and 64.52±28.43 g in the control group. The prostate resected weight was 24.97±15.77 g and 27.58±17.00 g respectively. The hemoglobin and platelet levels were −1.05±0.81 g/dL and −42.79±35.59×103/L in the test group, and −1.08±0.97 g/dL and −27.93±40.49×103/L, in the control group. The test group showed better outcomes in CBI application time (21.31±12.15 hours) and Foley catheter indwelling time (50.97±14.63 hours) compared to the control group (34.42±22.68 hours and 70.33±33.95 hours) (P<0.001). Conclusion: After trans-urethral prostate surgery, thrombin agent instillation can prevent post-operative hematuria and facilitate quicker recovery to daily activities.

Background/Aims: We aimed to evaluate survival time and prognostic factors in patients with advanced unresectable cholangiocarcinoma who have not received surgery, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy. Methods: A total of 1,377 patients, who were diagnosed with primary cholangiocarcinoma between 1996 and 2002, were reviewed retrospectively according to the following inclusion criteria: histologically proven primary adenocarcinoma arising from the bile-duct epithelium, advanced unresectable stages, no severe comorbidity that can affect survival time, and no history of surgery, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy. Results: Of the 1,377 cases reviewed, 330 patients complied with the inclusion criteria and were thus eligible to participate in this study; 203 had intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and 127 had hilar cholangiocarcinoma. The overall survival time of the entire cohort (n=330) was median 3.9 months (range; 0.2 to 67.1). The survival time was significantly shorter in the intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma group (3.0±5.3 months) than in the hilar cholangiocarcinoma group (5.9±10.1 months; Kaplan-Meier survival analysis). Multivariate analysis revealed that distant metastasis was a poor prognostic factor for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (p< 0.001), baseline serum albumin >3.0 g/dL was a favorable prognostic factor (p=0.02), and baseline serum carcinoembryonic antigen level >30 ng/mL was a poor prognostic factor for hilar cholangiocarcinoma (p=0.01). Conclusions: The median survival of advanced unresectable cholangiocarcinoma is dismal. (Gut and Liver 2009;3:298-305)

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Recently, copper metallization has been widely developed in TFT-LCD industry, because of its lowest electrical resistivity compared to other metal candidates such as aluminum and molybdenum. In addition, the copper metallization becomes more significant issue in a high frequency driving TFT-LCD with large sized panel. Since the copper has a low adhesion force against the glass substrate, the copper is inevitably used with an aid of an adhesive metal layer such as Ti, Ta and Mo. When the dissimilar metals like the copper and molybdenum are exposed together in a wet etchant, a typical galvanic reaction occurs and this results in an undercutting of copper line or partial stains on the metal surface after drying. Especially, it is well-known that the suitable taper angle of Cu/Mo is difficult to obtain. Such failures often lead to a bad performance of thin film transistor and the display quality. Wet galvanic corrosion behavior of DC magnetron sputtered the double layers of Mo alloys and copper on the glass substrate has been examined. Compared with Cu/Mo–Ti system, the pure Mo/Cu system shows recessed galvanic corrosion behavior.</P>
Tellurite glasses for vitrification of technetium-99 from pyrochemical processing

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A new alkali-alumino tellurite glass composition was developed to immobilize highly-volatile technetium (Tc) wastes generated from the pyrochemical processing technology. Tellurite glass can incorporate up to 7 mass% of rhenium (Re, used as a surrogate for Tc) with an average retention of 86%. Normalized elemental releases evaluated by seven-day product consistency test (PCT) satisfied the immobilized low activity waste requirements of United States when concentration of Ca(ReO<SUB>4</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB> in the glass was <12 mass%. Re ions form Re<SUP>7+</SUP> and are coordinated with four oxygens to form ReO<SUB>4</SUB> <SUP>−</SUP> tetrahedra. These tetrahedra bond to modifiers such as Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> or Na<SUP>+</SUP> that are further connected to the tellurite glass network by Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> (or Na<SUP>+</SUP>) – non-bridging oxygen bonds.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Alkali-alumino tellurite glass is developed to immobilize <SUP>99</SUP>Tc. </LI> <LI> Tellurite glass can incorporate up to 7 mass% of Re (used as a surrogate for Tc). </LI> <LI> Re ions in the tellurite glasses are in the form of Re(VII)O<SUB>4</SUB> <SUP>−</SUP> tetrahedra. </LI> <LI> The product consistency tests satisfied the requirements for the low activity wastes. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

To evaluate the influence of brain injury(cerebral infarction, cerebral hemorrhage, head injury due to traffic accident) on the thyroid funtion test, T_(3), T_(4), TSH, FT_(4), FT_(3), T_(3)RU, TBG, rT_(3), and FT_(4)I were measured in the 54 clinically euthyroid patients with brain injury. The results are summurized as follows : 1. The serum T_(3) concentration was significantly -lower in patients with brain injury(45.50±12ng/㎗) than in the control group(136.0±14ng/㎗) 2. The serum T_(4) concentration in patients with brain injury(6.18±4.0/㎍/㎗) was slightly diminished but not significantly lower than in the control group(7.7±1.3㎍/㎗) 3. The serum rT_(3) concentration in patients with brain injury(51. 66±13.0ng/㎗) was significantly higher than in the control group(26. 86±14ng/㎗) 4. The serum FT_(4) concentration in patients with brain injury(2.03±0. 4ng/㎗) was slightly increased but not significantly higher than in che control group(1.71±0.4ng/㎗) 5.
