Research Trends and Issues Regarding Biotechnology Inclusion in Technology Education: A Meta-Analysis of Relevant Literature

        John G. Wells,권혁수 한국기술교육학회 2009 한국기술교육학회지 Vol.9 No.1

Few could argue that biotechnology has played an important role in addressing the human condition and will continue to do so far into the foreseeable future. Within the educational community certain disciplines such as technology education, science education, and agriculture education have all recognized the significance and need for promoting biotechnology literacy at the secondary school level. The primary goal of this study was to investigate current research trends in biotechnology education and to better understand the issues regarding its implementation in the technology education classroom. The study began by establishing the rationale for inclusion of biotechnology in technology education based on the accepted operational definition. The inclusion of biotechnology is then further investigated through a review of relevant research literature viewed from the historical context of technology education curriculum development. From that context, the results from a meta-analysis of 28 prior studies are presented as a means of documenting research trends and issues relevant to the inclusion of biotechnology in technology education, and to provide insight into the current lack of classroom implementation. Findings from this study show that biotechnology content has been included as a content area in the technology education curriculum since 1991, and that inclusion of this same content area has similarly occurred in both science and agriculture education. Meta-analysis results revealed that prior studies on biotechnology education in technology education focused primarily on teachers using quantitative data analysis, and that there were parsimonious studies regarding student learning using qualitative or mixed methods research. In the final analysis the most significant finding points to the dire need for professional development of technology education teachers to become competent in the content of biotechnology and its associated instructional practices, and to be adequately supported by an administrative and facilities infrastructure. Results from this study provides usefulinsight into the process of biotechnology inclusion in technology education, and offers direction for further research investigating the instructional practices associated with the teaching of biotechnology in the technology education classroom. • 존 웰즈 교수의 초청 강연 초록

Wells, John The Korean Society Of Phonetic Sciences And Speech 1989 말소리 Vol.15 No.-

It is an honour to be speaking on phonetics at the invitation of the Phonetic Society of Korea. Through the Korean Hangout script, invented in the fifteenth century at the instigation of the great King Sejong, and the work Hunminjeongeum which describes it, this country has an important place in the world history of phonetics. Phonetics is the description and analysis of pronunciation. Spoken language can be investigated at three points: in the speaker (articulatory phonetics), in the hearer (auditory phonetics), and in the physical speech signal (acoustic phonetics)... Beginners in English who are Korean mother tongue have to learn to make the sound 'f' as in "coffee", which is a voiceless labio-dental fricative, lip on upper teeth. They also have to learn to make [\theta]sound in "think", a voiceless dental fricative.

Night shift preparation, performance, and perception: are there differences between emergency medicine nurses, residents, and faculty?

        John R. Richards,Taylor L. Stayton,Jason A. Wells,Aman K. Parikh,Erik G. Laurin 대한응급의학회 2018 Clinical and Experimental Emergency Medicine Vol.5 No.4

Objective Determine differences between faculty, residents, and nurses regarding night shift preparation, performance, recovery, and perception of emotional and physical health effects. Methods Survey study performed at an urban university medical center emergency department with an accredited residency program in emergency medicine. Results Forty-seven faculty, 37 residents, and 90 nurses completed the survey. There was no difference in use of physical sleep aids between groups, except nurses utilized blackout curtains more (69%) than residents (60%) and faculty (45%). Bedroom temperature preference was similar. The routine use of pharmacologic sleep aids differed: nurses and residents (both 38%) compared to faculty (13%). Residents routinely used melatonin more (79%) than did faculty (33%) and nurses (38%). Faculty preferred not to eat (45%), whereas residents (24%) preferred a full meal. The majority (>72%) in all groups drank coffee before their night shift and reported feeling tired despite their routine, with 4:00 a.m. as median nadir. Faculty reported a higher rate (41%) of falling asleep while driving compared to residents (14%) and nurses (32%), but the accident rate (3% to 6%) did not differ significantly. All had similar opinions regarding night shift-associated health effects. However, faculty reported lower level of satisfaction working night shifts, whereas nurses agreed less than the other groups regarding increased risk of drug and alcohol dependence. Conclusion Faculty, residents, and nurses shared many characteristics. Faculty tended to not use pharmacologic sleep aids, not eat before their shift, fall asleep at a higher rate while driving home, and enjoy night shift work less.

CT myelography of the thoraco-lumbar spine in 8 dogs with degenerative myelopathy

        Jeryl C.Jones,John H. Rossmeisl,Robert L. Bergman,Tana Wells,Katherine Butler,Karen D. Inzana 대한수의학회 2005 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol.6 No.4

CT myelography of the T11-L2 region was performed in 8 large-breed dogs with a clinical diagnosis of degenerative myelopathy (DM) and 3 large-breed dogs that were clinically normal. CT myelographic characteristics were recorded for each dog, at each disc level. Area measurements of the spinal cord, dural sac, vertebral canal, and vertebral body were recorded at 4 slice locations for each disc level. Mean area ratios were calculated and graphically compared, by slice location and group. In all dogs, CT myelography identified morphologic abnormalities that were not suspected from conventional myelograms. Characteristics observed with higher frequency in DM versus normal dogs were: spinal stenosis, disc protrusion, focal attenuation of the subarachnoid space, spinal cord deformity, small spinal cord, and paraspinal muscle atrophy. Mean spinal cord:dural sac, spinal cord:vertebral canal, dural sac: vertebral canal, and vertebral canal:vertebral body ratios were smaller in DM versus normal dogs at more than one disc level. Some CT myelographic characteristics in DM dogs were similar to those previously reported in humans, dogs and horses with stenotic myelopathy.

Design and Fabrication of Six-Degree of Freedom Piezoresistive Turbulent Water Flow Sensor

        Dao, Dzung Viet,Toshiyuki, Toriyama,Wells, John C.,Susumu, Sugiyama 한국센서학회 2002 센서학회지 Vol.11 No.4

This paper presents the design concept, theoretical investigation, and fabrication of a six-degree of freedom (6-DOF) turbulent flow micro sensor utilizing the piezoresistive effect in silicon. Unlike other flow sensors, which typically measure just one component of wall shear stress ^[1,2], the proposed sensor can independently detect six components of force and moment on a test particle in a turbulent flow. By combining conventional and four-terminal piezoresistors in Si (111), and arranging them suitably on the sensing area, the total number of piezoresistors used in this sensing chip is only eighteen much fewer than the forty eight piezoresistors of the prior art piezoresistive 6-DOF force sensor ^[3].
