Background: The industrial revolution that took place in the United Kingdom (UK) between 1760 and 1830 led to profound social change. Occupational medicine was concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of occupational diseases, that is, diseases directly caused by exposure to workplace hazards. A similar pattern of development has occurred globally. Methods: A review of relevant literature. Results: The international conceptualization and development of occupational health occurred during the 20th century. A new paradigm for occupational health has emerged that extends the classical focus on what might be termed “health risk management” that is, the focus on workplace hazards and risk to health to include the medical aspects of sickness absence and rehabilitation, the support and management of chronic noncommunicable diseases, and workplace health promotion. Conclusion: The future strategic direction for occupational health will be informed by a needs analysis and a consideration of where it should be positioned within future healthcare provision. What are the occupational health workforce implications of the vision for occupational health provision? New challenges and new ways of working will necessitate a review of the competence and capacity of the occupational health workforce, with implications for future workforce planning.

A Study of Metal Free Supercapacitors Using 3D Printing

Metal-free supercapacitors were designed and fabricated using a 3D printing process. An attempt was made to use carbon conductive paint to create both current collector and electrode. Two 3D printing techniques were combined and used to manufacture the electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs). The electrode material made from carbon conductive paint and distilled water showed a good electrical performance. The manufacturing process for the EDLCs has been explained in detail and the process showed a good reproducibility. Different thicknesses of electrode were tested and characterized. The results showed that both the mass of the electrode material and the capacitance of the supercapacitor increased as the thickness of the active layer increased. The thickness of the electrode increased 4 times from 0.5 mm to 2.0 mm, the mass of the electrode material increased nearly 3 times from 0.514 g to 1.498 g, which resulted in the increase of capacitance from 0.133 F to 0.295 F.
Early Cardiac Dysfunction in Biopsy-proven Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Background/Aims: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) encompasses a range of diseases from nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and has been linked to cardiovascular disease and sub-clinical cardiac remodeling. This paper presents a retrospective study of biopsy-proven NAFL and NASH to examine the differences in subclinical cardiac remodeling. Methods: Patients were recruited from an institutional repository of patients with liver-biopsy-confirmed NAFLD. Patients with a transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) within 12 months of the liver biopsy were included. The parameters of the diastolic dysfunction were reviewed for the differences between NAFL and NASH as well as between the stages and grades of NASH. Results: Thirty-three patients were included in the study, 17 with NAFL and 16 with NASH. The NASH patients were more likely to have lower platelets, higher AST, higher ALT, and higher rates of type 2 diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease, and hypertension than the NAFL patients. The E/e’ ratio on transthoracic echocardiogram was significantly higher in NASH compared to NAFL, advanced-stage NASH compared to early stage, and high-grade NASH compared to low-grade. The E/e’ ratio was also significantly higher in NASH than NAFL in patients without diabetes mellitus. The presence of diastolic dysfunction trended toward significance. The other markers of diastolic dysfunction were similar. Logistic regression revealed a statistical association with E/e' and NASH. Conclusions: NASH patients had evidence of a higher E/e’ ratio than NAFL, and there was a trend towards a significant diastolic dysfunction. Patients with NASH compared to NAFL should be closely monitored for signs and symptoms of cardiac dysfunction. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2021;78:161-167)
Genome Constitution and Classification Using Retrotransposon-Based Markers in the Orphan Crop Banana

We have exploited the repetitive and dispersed nature of many long terminal repeat (LTR)-retrotransposon families for characterizing genome constitutions and classifying cultivars of the genus Musa. Insertional polymorphisms of the elements were studied using seven published and two newly designed primers facing outwards from the LTRs and reverse transcriptase (RT) domain of the retrotransposon. The primers generated specific amplification patterns showing the universal applicability of this marker type. The Inter-Retrotransposon Amplified Polymorphism (IRAP) markers distinguished the A and B genomes of the banana species (Musa acuminata Colla and Musa balbisiana Colla) and between banana cultivars. The IRAP markers enabled phylogenetic analysis of 16 Malaysian banana cultivars and determination of the genome constitution of hybrid banana (AAB, ABB, AABB, and AAAB), and gave information about ancestral genotypes of the hybrids. In addition, the TRAP detected new retrotransposon insertions into the genome of tissue culture regenerants. This PCR-based IRAP assay is amenable to large-scale throughput demands in screening breeding populations and is applicable for any crop.
