From the findings that UTH increase begins with a build-up of positive divergence even before the evaporation of cloud hydrometeors takes place and that UTH increase ends with an appearance of negative divergence values even before the evaporation ends, it is strongly suggested that moistening of the UT is more closely tied with water vapor transport from the convection center to surrounding areas than with the evaporation of cloud hydrometeors. Considering that vapor concentrations are nearly an order of magnitude larger than those of cloud ice, the higher degree of correlation shown between UTH tendency and divergence supports the notion that advection of moist air from the convection center is likely to be the main factor responsible for moistening of the UT.
