In this paper, we analyze the polio incidence data based on the Poisson autoregressive models, focusing particularly on change-point detection. Since the data include some strongly deviating observations, we employ the robust cumulative sum (CUSUM) test proposed by Kang and Song (2015) to perform the test for parameter change. Contrary to the result of Kang and Lee (2014), our data analysis indicates that there is no significant change in the case of the CUSUM test with strong robustness and the same result is obtained after ridding the polio data of outliers. We additionally consider the comparison of the forecasting performance. All the results demonstrate that the robust CUSUM test performs adequately in the presence of seemingly outliers.

Abstract.

In this paper, we consider the problem of testing for a parameter change in a first-order random coefficient integer-valued autoregressive [RCINAR(1)] model. We employ the cumulative sum (CUSUM) test based on the conditional least-squares and modified quasi-likelihood estimators. It is shown that under regularity conditions, the CUSUM test has the same limiting distribution as the supremum of the squares of independent Brownian bridges. The CUSUM test is then applied to the analysis of the monthly polio counts data set.

Postoperative atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation (AARS) is a rare complication that develops almost exclusively in children following oropharyngeal and otologic surgeries, proposing that oropharyngeal inflammatory responses and excessive head rotation are responsible factors. However, there have been no reports of AARS after excision of a nevus on the head and neck. Here, we present two cases of AARS following limited head rotation during simple nevus excision. Patient 1, a 9-year-old girl, complained of neck pain and limited range of motion after excision of the nevus on the neck. After 2 months, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging finally revealed AARS with a ruptured transverse atlantal ligament. A month of halo traction was required for the treatment. Patient 2, an 11-year-old girl, presented with immediate pain and limited neck extension after tissue expander insertion under the upper chest and excision of the nevus on her left cheek. The diagnosis was promptly made using cervical spine radiography. A cervical collar was applied for 1 month. Both patients recovered without any complications after treatment. This report highlights the importance of suspicion for AARS after surgery regardless of surgical duration or amount of head rotation.
Tomlinson-harashima precoder with tilted constellation for reducing transmission power
Jiwon Kang,Hyungwoo Ku,Dong-Seung Kwon,Chungyong Lee IEEE 2009 IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS Vol.8 No.7

Tomlinson-Harashima precoder (THP) is being noted for an efficient alternative to dirty paper coder. THP increases the transmission power due to the use of the modulo operator. In this paper, we propose a method that reduces the transmission power by tilting the constellations of the transmit data symbols. The symbol error rate (SER) is improved for a fixed SNR by reducing the transmission power. Average transmission power is calculated asymptotically by using an extreme value distribution. We have shown that the transmission power can be significantly reduced when we use the tilted constellation THP. As the transmission power determines the SER slope, at high SNRs we achieve lower SER than in the case of a transmission over an AWGN channel. The tilted angle can be estimated at the receiver. An angle estimation algorithm is proposed that optimizes angle estimation error and SER.We use the approximation of the angle estimation error and SER to find an optimum number of tilted angles. By using the proposed angle estimation algorithm and the optimum number of tilted angles, the tilted constellation THP always outperforms the conventional THP algorithm.

Properties of the Membrane-Bound NADH

Membranes prepared from Bacillus cereus KCTC 3674, grown aerobically on a complex medium, oxidized NADH exclusively, whereas deamino-NADH was little oxidized. The respiratory chain-linked NADH oxidase system exhibited an apparent Km value of approximately 65 μM for NADH. On the other hand, the enzymatic properties of the NADH: menadione oxidoreductase of NADH oxidase system were examined. The maximum activity of NADH: menadione oxidoreductase was obtained at pH 9.5 in the presence of 0.1 M KCl (or NaCl). The NADH: menadione oxidoreductase activity was very resistant to the respiratory chain inhibitors such as rotenone, capsaicin, and AgNO₃. Interestingly, the activity was stimulated by the 2-heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline-N-oxide (HQNO).

Background: The most important aspect of a retrospective cohort study is the operational definition (OP) of the disease. We developed a detailed OP for the detection of sodiumglucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) related to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). The OP was systemically verified and analyzed. Methods: All patients prescribed SGLT2i at four university hospitals were enrolled in this experiment. A DKA diagnostic algorithm was created and distributed to each hospital; subsequently, the number of SGLT2i-related DKAs was confirmed. Then, the algorithm functionality was verified through manual chart reviews by an endocrinologist using the same OP. Results: A total of 8,958 patients were initially prescribed SGLT2i. According to the algorithm, 0.18% (16/8,958) were confirmed to have SGLT2i-related DKA. However, based on manual chart reviews of these 16 cases, there was only one case of SGLT2i-related DKA (positive predictive value = 6.3%). Even after repeatedly narrowing the diagnosis range of the algorithm, the effect of a positive predictive value was insignificant (6.3–10.0%, P > 0.999). Conclusion: Owing to the nature of electronic medical record data, we could not create an algorithm that clearly differentiates SGLT2i-related DKA despite repeated attempts. In all retrospective studies, a portion of the samples should be randomly selected to confirm the accuracy of the OP through chart review. In retrospective cohort studies in which chart review is not possible, it will be difficult to guarantee the reliability of the results.
