Vol.32 No.3

The design improvement of mechanical ventilation systems (which usually operate 24/7 year round) for underground parking lots is critical for human health and energy. In this paper, a mechanical ventilation system was re-designed and improved to solve the problems of ventilation performance and high fan energy use in a large underground parking lots. The inlets/outlets are at the ground level of the building, and the dilution method is used to calculate the required exhaust and supply ventilation rates. Two types of fan room for vent tower models (with sirocco fan and airfoil fan) were constructed and simulated under seven design procedures using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). For the mechanical ventilation of an underground parking lot with an airfoil fan, the ranges of the computed air flow rate and ventilation efficiency are consistent with the requirements of ventilation performance and design criteria. This system optimization procedure of the ventilation system that has been re-designed is effective in meeting the required air flow rate in underground parking lots.

      • A novel speech-act coding scheme to visualize the intention of crew communications to cope with simulated off-normal conditions of nuclear power plants

Park, Jinkyun,Kim, Yochan Elsevier 2018 Reliability engineering & system safety Vol.178 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Many researchers have commonly pointed out that the characteristics of crew communications is one of the most important factors affecting the operation safety of complicated process control systems. From this concern, a couple of speech-act coding schemes were developed from the point of view of ‘what was done by crew members?’ In this study, a novel speech-act coding scheme was developed, which allows us to see the contents crew communication from a different angle – ‘what was the communication intention of crew members?’ To this end, the communication contents uttered by MCR operators who were faced with various kinds of simulated off-normal conditions were collected from the full-scope simulator of domestic NPPs. Then, the novel speech-act coding scheme was developed by involving additional yardsticks (such as <I>Means, Acceptance criteria</I>, and <I>Constraints</I>), which are useful for elucidating the nature of communications from a task description perspective. As a result, the novel speech-act coding scheme was proposed, which consists of 45 behavioral task categories and the associated definitions. Although the novel speech-act coding scheme proposed in this study is still a preliminary version, this would be a good starting point to enhance the quality of crew communications through visualizing their communication intentions.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Crew communication is critical input for the safety of complicated systems. </LI> <LI> Existing speech-act coding schemes mainly emphasize <I>what was done</I>. </LI> <LI> 3657 utterances were analyzed in order to identify 45 behavioral task categories. </LI> <LI> A novel speech-act coding scheme emphasizes a communication intention. </LI> </UL> </P>

The Operators' Non-compliance Behavior to Conduct Emergency Operating Procedures - Comparing with the Complexity of the Procedural Steps

Park Jinkyun,Jung Wondea Korean Nuclear Society 2003 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.35 No.5

According to the results of related studies, one of the typical factors related to procedure related human errors is the complexity of procedures. This means that comparing the change of the operators' behavior with respect to the complexity of procedures may be meaningful in clarifying the reasons for the operators' non-compliance behavior. In this study, to obtain data related to the operators' non-compliance behavior, emergency training records were collected using a full scope simulator. And three types of the operators' behavior (such as strict adherence, skipping redundant actions and modifying action sequences) observed from the collected emergency training records were compared with the complexity of the procedural steps. As the results, two remarkable relationships are obtained. They are: 1) the operators seem to frequently adopt non-compliance behavior to conduct the procedural steps that have an intermediate procedural complexity, 2) the operators seems to accommodate their non-compliance behavior to the complexity of the procedural steps. Therefore, it is expected that these relationships can be used as meaningful clues not only to scrutinize the reason for non-compliance behavior but also to suggest appropriate remedies for the reduction of non-compliance behavior that can result in procedure related human error.

A Study on the Revision of the TACOM Measure

Park, Jinkyun,Jung, Wondea Professional Technical Group on Nuclear Science 2007 IEEE transactions on nuclear science Vol.54 No.6

<P> It is well known that the performance of human operators, which is one of the predominant factors affecting the safety of any human-involved systems, is largely attributable to the complexity of tasks. From this regard, in order to evaluate the complexity of tasks stipulated in procedures, Park <etal/> developed the TACOM measure that consists of five sub-measures. In this study, in order to unravel a potential problem observed in the course of validation studies about the TACOM measure, the revised TACOM (R-TACOM) measure was suggested based on the theory of a task complexity. Although more detailed studies are necessary, the result of this study indicates that the R-TACOM measure is a more proper measure than the TACOM measure in quantifying the complexity of tasks stipulated in procedures. </P>

Investigating the Appropriateness of the TACOM Measure – Application to the Complexity of Proceduralized Tasks for High Speed Train Drivers

        JINKYUN PARK,WONDEA JUNG,JONGHYUN KO 한국원자력학회 2010 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.42 No.1

According to wide-spread experience in many industries, a procedure is one of the most effective countermeasures to reduce the possibility of human related problems. Unfortunately, a systematic framework to evaluate the complexity of procedural tasks seems to be very scant. For this reason, the TACOM measure, which can quantify the complexity of procedural tasks, has been developed. In this study, the appropriateness of the TACOM measure is investigated by comparing TACOM scores regarding the procedural tasks of high speed train drivers with the associated workload scores measured by the NASA-TLX technique. As a result, it is observed that there is a meaningful correlation between the TACOM scores and the associated NASA-TLX scores. Therefore, it is expected that the TACOM measure can properly quantify the complexity of procedural tasks.

      • Application of a process mining technique to identifying information navigation characteristics of human operators working in a digital main control room – feasibility study

        Park, Jinkyun,Jung, Jae-Yoon,Heo, Gyunyoung,Kim, Yochan,Kim, Jaewhan,Cho, Jaehyun Elsevier 2018 Reliability engineering & system safety Vol.175 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>It is well known that one of the major contributors to the significant events of socio-technical systems is a human error. Accordingly, various kinds of human reliability analysis techniques have been proposed for many decades, which allow us to properly estimate human error probabilities. However, one of the urgent challenges is to quantify human error probabilities when required tasks are conducted in a control room equipped with up-to-date digital equipment (e.g., digital main control room) because existing techniques are mainly focusing on an analog control room. In this regard, it is necessary to carefully understand how professional operators in the digital control room carry out the required tasks. Therefore, in this study, information navigation characteristics (i.e., information gathering behaviors observable from professional operators who need to conduct the required tasks by using given digital equipment) were analyzed based on process mining techniques. To this end, event logs were collected from the professional operators of domestic nuclear power plants who were exposed to simulated off-normal conditions in a digital main control room. As a result, it seems that process mining techniques are useful for extracting crucial information needed for the human reliability analysis in the digital main control room.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> HRA is important for enhancing the safety of NPPs. </LI> <LI> HRA quality is largely dependent on the amount of available information. </LI> <LI> Information navigation characteristics are important for HRA in a digital MCR. </LI> <LI> Process mining technique is useful tool for investigating these characteristics. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • A Study on the Validity of a Task Complexity Measure for Emergency Operating Procedures of Nuclear Power Plants—Comparing With a Subjective Workload

Jinkyun Park,Wondea Jung IEEE 2006 IEEE transactions on nuclear science Vol.53 No.5

<P>In this study, the appropriateness of the task complexity (TACOM) measure that can quantify the complexity of emergency tasks was investigated by comparing subjective workload scores with the associated TACOM scores. To this end, based on the NASA-TLX (task load index) technique, 18 operators were asked to subjectively estimate perceived workload for 23 emergency tasks that were specified in the emergency operating procedures of the reference nuclear power plants. As the result of comparisons, it was observed that subjective workload scores increase in proportion to the increase of TACOM scores. Therefore, it is expect that the TACOM measure can be used as a serviceable method to quantify the complexity of emergency tasks</P>

      • Calculating nominal human error probabilities from the operation experience of domestic nuclear power plants

Park, Jinkyun,Kim, Yochan,Jung, Wondea Elsevier 2018 Reliability engineering & system safety Vol.170 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>It is evident that human reliability analysis (HRA) practitioners require a large spectrum of HRA data that are indispensable not only for understanding the cause of a human error but also for estimating its human error probability (HEP) under a given task context. Accordingly it is very important to collect HRA data from diverse sources as much as possible, which should be done based on a firm technical underpinning. In this regard, Park et al. proposed a novel framework that allows us to systematically calculate the number of task opportunities from the investigation reports reflecting the operation experience of domestic nuclear power plants . In this study, based on the proposed framework, the nominal HEPs of 15 task types are quantified based on the number of task opportunities calculated from the 13 investigation reports stemming from diverse human errors. Although there are several limitations to be technically resolved, the results of this study are meaningful because we are able to take the first step in securing HRA data from investigation reports that reflect the operation experience of domestic NPPs.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> HEP (human error probability) is critical input for a risk assessment. </LI> <LI> Event report is an important source for estimating nominal HEPs. </LI> <LI> 13 event reports issued from a regulatory body are investigated. </LI> <LI> Nominal HEPs 15 task types are estimated from event investigation reports. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • A systematic framework to develop diagnosis procedures in the nuclear power plants - experimental verification

Jinkyun Park(박진균),Wondea Jung(정원대) 대한인간공학회 2006 대한인간공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.- No.-

A diagnosis procedure that allows operators to successfully identify the nature of an on-going event is inevitable for an effective and appropriate recovery. Unfortunately, studies for a framework that can suggest a unified and consistent process in constructing a serviceable diagnosis procedure seem to be scant. Thus, a systematic framework that can be used to construct a useful diagnosis procedure is suggested. In this study, using a full-scope simulator of the reference NPP, an experiment is conducted to confirm the appropriateness of the suggested framework. As a result, it is shown that an operator’s diagnosis performance is improved when the revised diagnosis procedure is used. Therefore, it is reasonable to conclude that the suggested framework is useful in constructing an effective diagnosis procedure.

        박병용(Park Beungyong),조진균(Cho Jinkyun),박두용(Park Dooyong),오병철(Oh Byoungchull) 한국태양에너지학회 2021 한국태양에너지학회 논문집 Vol.41 No.3

The environmental control systems used in educational facilities are diverse and obsolete. To provide safety for students and a pleasant learning environment, various systems are installed in learning spaces. In this study, on-site statistical surveys and energy consumption analyses were conducted in ten educational facilities in South Korea. Through awareness surveys of the persons in charge of education facilities, the energy conservation requirements were investigated. The system configuration was generalized according to the energy source, and through this, it was possible to determine the type of system used.
