Vol.0 No.33

Shin Gwang-su (申光洙, 1712∼1775), also known as Seokbuk (石北), is a well-known poet and author of the song poetry (詩唱) “Gwanseo-akbu (Poems of the Gwanseo Region, 關西樂府)” in the late Joseon Dynasty. “Gwanseo-akbu” was popular among the Joseon Dynasty musicians. This fact confirms that the tradition of adding a melody to Shin Gwang-su’s “hansi (Korean poetry recorded in Chinese characters, 漢詩)” already existed in the Joseon Dynasty. It is also a proof that the hansi poem was used in songs. Besides Seokbuk, other literary figures in the Joseon Dynasty wrote and sang hansi. In that case, the place of communication for songs was a poet’s personal study, or “sarangbang.” But when, like the works by Seokbuk, poems were sung by musicians, they became available to the public to communicate through music. This study is one of the attempts to re-make Seokbuk Shin Gwang-su’s poems and songs, once popular among the Joseon Dynasty people, into the contemporary music that can be performed on stage. By adding a certain melody to his poems, this study introduces a case of musical work and offers an opportunity to consider hansi as performance art. There is a number of hansi works by Shin Gwang-su, and each poem includes material which can help survey Shin Gwang-su’s musical life. And, working on his hansi works makes it possible to narrate major events that took place in Shin’s life. Thus, this study attempts to focus Shin Gwang-su’s musical life and introduces methods and contents to stage his hansi poems as performance art.

Vol.19 No.-

The Book of Songs, which is the oldest book of poetry of the ancient China, is one of the scriptures of the Seven Chinese Classics and influenced the history of Confucianism after entering Korea. Especially, the Book of Songs is a scripture related to music which used to have lyrics and takes an important position as a scripture in terms of music so that some scholars even view the Book of Songs as the Scripture of Music. Especially in the Joseon Dynasty when Confucianism took its root firmly, the view that considered the Book of Songs as music with lyrics, not just as literary text, spread widely. If a poem that used to have a melody has only its text left, its melody will be imagined differently by different people. So during the Joseon Dynasty, the melody of the Book of Songs that had been chosen by Zhu Xi, who held academic authority, was introduced to Joseon, touched up, and used in various ceremonies. In addition, the edifying function of the text of the Book of Songs led to the efforts to combine the lyrics with various melodies that were used at that time. Such efforts can be found in the aspect of choosing lyrics of the Book of Songs, which were used in establishing various ceremonies in the early Joseon era. In the meantime, in the late Joseon era, there were in-depth academic discussions on the Book of Songs along with the theme of ‘poetry and music’. Like this, there were various cases where music in the Joseon Dynasty accepted or used the Book of Songs and this paper discussed such aspect. First of all, this paper examined the aspect of how Joseon accepted and used what China made as trial poetry and music, since the music of the Book of Songs does not exist now. Second, it reviewed the aspect of combining the lyrics of the Book of Songs with a third melody. Third, it studied the aspect of how music related to the Book of Songs was used in various ceremonies. Also, it discussed the developing aspect of the study of poetry and music that was formed under the premise that the Book of Songs was ‘music with songs’.

Protective effects of Acanthopanax divaricatus extract in mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease

        Ji-Jing Yan,Won-Gyun Ahn,Jun-Sub Jung,Hee-Sung Kim,Ashraful Hasan,Dong-Keun Song 한국영양학회 2014 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.8 No.4

BACKGROUND: Acanthopanax divaricatus var. albeofructus (ADA) extract has been reported to have anti-oxidant, immunomodulatory, and anti-mutagenic activity. MATERIALS/METHODS: We investigated the effects of ADA extract on two mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease (AD); intracerebroventricular injection of β-amyloid peptide (Aβ) and amyloid precursor protein/presenilin 1 (APP/PS1)-transgenic mice. RESULTS: Intra-gastric administration of ADA stem extract (0.25 g/kg, every 12 hrs started from one day prior to injection of Aβ1-42 until evaluation) effectively blocked Aβ1-42-induced impairment in passive avoidance performance, and Aβ1-42-induced increase in immunoreactivities of glial fibrillary acidic protein and interleukin (IL)-1α in the hippocampus. In addition, it alleviated the Aβ1-42-induced decrease in acetylcholine and increase in malondialdehyde levels in the cortex. In APP/PS1-transgenic mice, chronic oral administration of ADA stem extract (0.1 or 0.5 g/kg/day for six months from the age of six to 12 months) resulted in significantly enhanced performance of the novel-object recognition task, and reduced amyloid deposition and IL-1β in the brain. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that ADA stem extract may be useful for prevention and treatment of AD.

CD40-CD40 Ligand Interactions in the Production of IL-12 and IFN-γ by Tuberculous Pleural Mononuclear Cells

        Song, Chang-Hwa,Nam, Hyun-Hee,An, Jeun-Ok,Lee, Ji-Sook,Kim, Hwa-Jung,Park, Jeong-Kyu,Suhr, Ji-Won,Jung, Sung-Soo,Na, Moon-Jun,Paik, Tae-Hyun,Jo, Eun-Kyeong The Korean Association of Immunobiologists 2002 Immune Network Vol.2 No.3

Background: Our previous study showed that purified protein derivative (PPD)-stimulated pleural mononuclear cells (PMC) from tuberculous pleurisy (Tbp) produced significantly more $IFN-{\gamma}$ (10- to 70-fold) after in vitro PPD stimulation than freshly isolated pleural cells from malignant pleurisy. The present study was designed to determine whether blocking the CD40-CD40 ligand (CD40L) interaction decreases $IFN-{\gamma}$ production by altering IL-12 levels. Methods: IL-12 and $IFN-{\gamma}$ production after neutralizing anti-CD40L antibody treatment was compared to the efficacy of anti-CD80, anti-CD86, and a combination of anti-CD80 and CD86 (CD80+86) monoclonal antibodies (mAb). These activities were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), after in vitro stimulation with PPO antigen (Ag). Results: Neutralization of CD80, CD86 and CD80+86 did not decrease $IFN-{\gamma}$ and IL-12 production in Tbp-PMC, whereas neutralization of CD40L significantly depressed IL-12 p40 and $IFN-{\gamma}$. In addition, neutralization of CD40L completely inhibited IL-12 p40 and $IFN-{\gamma}$ mRNA expression. Conclusion: The CD40-CD40L interaction might play a major role in IL-12 and $IFN-{\gamma}$ production in Tbp-PMC, thus contributing to protective immunity in human tuberculosis.

Enzyme-assisted extraction, chemical characteristics, and immunostimulatory activity of polysaccharides from Korean ginseng (<i>Panax ginseng</i> Meyer)

        Song, Young-Ran,Sung, Su-Kyung,Jang, Mi,Lim, Tae-Gyu,Cho, Chang-Won,Han, Chun-Ji,Hong, Hee-Do Elsevier 2018 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF BIOLOGICAL MACROMOLECULES Vol.116 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, enzyme-assisted extraction was used to isolate functional polysaccharides from Korean ginseng (<I>Panax ginseng</I> Meyer) and the physicochemical and biological properties of the extracted polysaccharides were investigated, comparing with those from traditional hot-water extraction (FGWP). In macrophages, their effects on cytokines production could be ordered as FGEP-CA ≥ FGEP-A > FGEP-C > FGWP, suggesting that FGEP-CA (combined cellulase- and α-amylase-extracted polysaccharide) is a potent immunostimulator. In addition, enzymatic digestion led to differences in the monosaccharide profile of the extract. FGWP mainly consisted of rhamnose, arabinose, galactose, galacturonic acid, and glucose in molar percentages of 1.8:10.1:9.2:17.8:60.6, whereas FGEP-CA was 3.2:11.4:16.5:22.3:45.8, respectively, suggesting that enzyme-assisted extraction of ginseng polysaccharides produces a higher proportion of pectin polysaccharides. The HPLC profile of FGEP-CA also showed lower and more heterogeneous molecular weights than FGWP did. In cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppressed mice, FGEP-CA administration ameliorated decreased spleen and thymus indices (200 mg/kg), lymphocyte proliferation, natural killer cell activity, leukocyte counts, and the serum cytokines, interleukin-2, interleukin-6, and interferon-γ (100 and 200 mg/kg). These results suggest that enzyme-assisted extraction using cellulase and α-amylase is an effective method for the preparation of functional polysaccharides from fresh Korean ginseng, and FGEP-CA could be utilized as a potential immune-stimulatory agent.</P>

Increased IL-12, but Depressed IL-18 Production after In Vitro Stimulation with a 30-kDa Mycobacterial Antigen in Tuberculous Pleural Mononuclear Cells

        Song, Chang-Hwa,Jo, Eun-Kyeong,Kim, Seong-Ho,Kim, Hwa-Jung,Suhr, Ji-Won,Paik, Tae-Hyun,Nam, Hyun-Hee,Lim, Jae-Hyun,Kim, Un-Ok,Lee, Ji-Sook,Park, Jeong-Kyu The Korean Society for Microbiology 2001 Journal of Bacteriology and Virology Vol.31 No.3

In this study, we investigated interleukin (IL)-18 and IL-12 following in vitro stimulation with either the 30-kDa or purified protein derivative (PPD) antigens (Ag) of pleural mononuclear cells from 12 cases of tubercular pleurisy (TB-PMC) and 8 cases of malignant pleurisy (MG-PMC). Ag-stimulated TB-PMC produced significantly more IL-12 than did MG-PMC and the levels correlated with those of IFN-${\gamma}$. Although elevated IL-18 levels were found in freshly isolated pleural fluids, in vitro IL-18 production in response to either Ag was dramatically decreased in TB-PMC. Pro-IL-18 mRNA was detected before and after Ag stimulation in TB patients. Supernatants from the Ag-stimulated TB-PMC significantly suppressed IL-18 production in normal peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and primary malignant cells over an 18 h incubation period. In addition, this suppressive activity was not inactivated by either heat or trypsin. Our findings imply that modulation of IL-12 and IL-18 levels may contribute to the Th1 elevation induced in human TB-PMC by the 30-kDa and PPD antigens.

      • In vivo and in vitro testing of the efficacy of a novel drug delivery fabric

( Ji Yeon Hong ),( Won Jong Oh ),( Tae Rin Kwon ),( I Song Im ),( Sun Young Choi ),( Beom Joon Kim ),( Chang Kwun Hong ) 대한피부과학회 2015 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.67 No.2

Background: Transdermal drug delivery systems provide more reliable and consistent administration than oral routes because they avoid the effects of digestive degradation and first-pass liver metabolism. However, penetration of any compound through the skin is prevented primarily by the epidermis. Objectives: We assess the efficacy of a novel fabric for drug delivery, with the aim of developing an improved method for transdermal drug delivery. Methods: Guinea pigs were divided into a control group and three test groups; treated with slimming cream and no fabric, 100% cotton fabric, or our novel fabric. The amount of fat loss was evaluated by histological staining. The skin penetrance of rhodamine B base was assessed using a fluorescence penetration test and the transdermal penetration of caffeine was also evaluated in vitro using Franz diffusion cells each. Results: Drug delivery with our novel fabric resulted in reduction in adipocyte size after 28 days. The fabric also enhanced the transdermal delivery of rhodamine B base and caffeine penetration compared with the control groups. Conclusion: Our novel drug delivery fabric is an effective way to enhance the transdermal delivery of slimming cream. This fabric can potentially be used to enhance the transdermal delivery of several agents, including drugs.

      • Effects of Bentonite Erosion and Intrusion on the Mechanical Properties of Jointed Rock Mass

Vol.21 No.1

Compacted bentonite buffer blocks placed in the engineered barrier system for high-level nuclear waste disposal can undergo swelling, intrusion into rock fractures, and erosion with saturation. Bentonite erosion and intrusion can lead to bentonite mass loss via groundwater flow and can ultimately compromise the overall integrity of the disposal system. To ensure the long-term safety of deep geological disposal, it is essential to assess the hydro-mechanical interactions between the bentonite buffer and surrounding rock. In this study, the impact of bentonite erosion and intrusion on the mechanical properties of the jointed rock mass were assessed via elastic wave propagation measurements using the quasi-static resonant column test. Granite rock discs obtained from the Korea Underground Research Tunnel and Gyeongju bentonite were used to simulate jointed rock specimens with different bentonite intrusion conditions. Different degrees of bentonite intrusion were simulated by mixing bentonite and water to create bentonite paste and gel. The longitudinal and shear wave velocities under different normal stress levels were used to quantify the effects of bentonite intrusion on the mechanical characteristics of the rock joint. Complementary numerical analysis using the three-dimensional distinct element code (3DEC) was conducted to provide improved understanding of wave propagation within bentonite gouge-filled rock mass.

      • Template-engineered epitaxial BiVO4 photoanodes for efficient solar water splitting

        Song, Jaesun,Cha, Jaeseong,Lee, Mi Gyoung,Jeong, Hye Won,Seo, Sehun,Yoo, Ji Ae,Kim, Taemin Ludvic,Lee, Jongmin,No, Heesung,Kim, Do Hyun,Jeong, Sang Yun,An, Hyunji,Lee, Byoung Hun,Bark, Chung Wung,Park Royal Society of Chemistry 2017 Journal of Materials Chemistry A Vol.5 No.35

<▼1><P>The photoelectrochemical properties of template-engineered epitaxial BiVO4 photoanodes have been enhanced approximately 10 times that of bare BiVO4.</P></▼1><▼2><P>Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) has attracted significant attention as a promising photoanode material for hydrogen production <I>via</I> photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting because of its narrow optical band gap and suitable band edge positions for water oxidation. However, the actual photoactivity of BiVO4 is considerably limited by its poor electron transport and slow water oxidation kinetics. Although several studies have been carried out to improve its photo-efficiency <I>via</I> the enhancement of electron transport and water oxidation kinetics, only a few studies have reported the growth of epitaxial BiVO4 to explore the fundamental properties of BiVO4 for PEC water splitting because extremely flat epitaxial films exhibit poor photo-efficiency because of their low surface-active area. However, studies of epitaxial BiVO4 still have the potential to provide new routes for improving its photo-efficiency. In this study, the growth of epitaxial BiVO4 is investigated using a thin γ-WO3 template layer deposited on a SrTiO3(001) substrate covered by a SrRuO3 (SRO) bottom electrode using pulsed laser deposition. Consequently, at 1.23 V <I>vs.</I> the RHE (reversible hydrogen electrode), the photocurrent density of epitaxial BiVO4 on the γ-WO3 template layer (2.20 mA cm−2) is approximately 10 times that of bare BiVO4, related to the effective charge transfer by the γ-WO3 intermediate layers and the subsequent increase in the surface-active area of epitaxial BiVO4. These results strongly suggest that epitaxial BiVO4 grown using a template layer can be a cornerstone for the in-depth understanding of the fundamental properties of BiVO4 for PEC water splitting.</P></▼2>
