      • Development and Validation of Screening Scale for Preterm Birth Risk

        Jeung-Im Kim 한국간호과학회 2021 한국간호과학회 학술대회 Vol.2021 No.10

Aim(s): This study was aimed to develop a valid and reliable Screening Scale for Preterm Birth Risk in Korean (PBRSS-K). Method(s): This study used the mixed method approach to develop PBRSS-K. Subjects for exploratory factor analysis were 167 women delivered before 37+0weeks after who had preterm symptoms and admitted to highrisk pregnant intensive care unit. Preliminary items were generated by an extensive review of the literature and in-depth interviews. Twenty-three experts of women’s health nursing evaluated the content validity of PBRSS-K. After item reduction process with exploratory factor analysis, the scales of its psychometric properties were assessed using SPSS 26. The confirmatory factor analysis to get final item was done using Amos 26. Result(s): The final version of the PBRSS-K comprises 23 items within seven dimensions. Factor analysis identified items explaining 65.9% of the total variance with CFI=.950, IFI>.90, LI>.90, and RMSEA<.06. The final confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the model estimates were satisfactory for the construct. The PBRSS-K showed a high internal consistency and satisfactory reliability with Cronbach’s alpha .85. The validity also was confirmed with the Risk of Preterm Delivery for predictive validity (r=.44, p<.001), with physical symptoms for criterion validity (r=.87, p<.001), and with pregnant stress for discriminative validity (r=.77, p<.001). Conclusion(s): The PBRSS-K is a valid and reliable instrument to assess pregnant women’s risk of preterm birth. Clinical nurses are encouraged to apply and to get information for effective intervention at maternal fetal intensive care unit (MFICU). It is suggested to be evaluate it for standardization and cut-off score.

Information and General Guidance for Healthcare Professionals in the Fourth Wave of COVID-19

        Kim, Jeung-Im,Yu, Mi,Yu, Soyoung,Park, Jin-Hee 한국간호과학회 2021 Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing Vol.51 No.4

The COVID-19 curve seesawed and reached the fourth pandemic in July 2021. Since the first three waves, the focus has been on achieving herd immunity through vaccination while a lot of manpower is used for quarantine. However, we have not been able to prevent the fourth wave. The causes are thought to be related to people who doubt the safety of the vaccine and refuse it or violate quarantine guidelines such as social distancing. This study examined guidelines for preventing and controlling COVID-19, the accuracy of vaccination-related information, and described quarantine measures including for those who completed vaccination. In conclusion, prevention and vaccination are the most effective countermeasures against COVID-19. We recommend people vaccination with self-quarantine. Also, it is necessary to make large investments to protect and support nurses in future pandemics.

Healthcare Considerations for Special Populations during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Review

Kim, Jeung-Im,Im, YeoJin,Song, Ju-Eun,Jang, Sun Joo 한국간호과학회 2021 Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing Vol.51 No.5

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has emerged as a threat to human health and public safety. People of all ages are susceptible to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection. However, the clinical manifestations of this infection differ by age. This study purposes to describe healthcare considerations for special populations, such as children, pregnant and lactating women, and older adults, who may have unique healthcare needs, in the pandemic situation. To realize the research purpose, we conducted a review of the practice guidelines of public documents and qualified studies that were published online/offline during a specific period. The review identified current knowledge on care for newborns, children in schools, pregnant women (from antenatal to postpartum care), and older adults suffering from high-risk conditions. Subsequently, we summarize vaccination guidance for special populations and, finally, discuss the issues currently affecting special populations. Therefore, this current knowledge on care for special populations helps nurses to provide accurate information on vaccinations aimed at preventing COVID-19 and protecting the masses from infection. Currently, the scarcity of information on COVID-19 variants necessitates further research on measures to reduce pandemic spread.

        Kim, Jeung-Im,Suh, Eunyoung E.,Song, Ju-Eun,Im, YeoJin,Park, Jin-Hee,Yu, Soyoung,Jang, Sun Joo,Kim, Da-Hee 한국간호과학회 2020 Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing Vol.50 No.3

Purpose: This year 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Korean Society of Nursing Science (KSNS). This study was aimed to explore development of caring and describe the 50 years of history of KSNS within the sociocultural context of Korea regarding academic footsteps, meanings, and implications for the future. Methods: This study used a historical research methodology using a literature review and bibliometric analysis. Relevant literature was reviewed and the published abstracts in the Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing (JKAN) were analyzed using VOSviewer. Results: Birth control and family planning in the 1970s was the main research topic. In the 1980s, the development of nursing concepts, theories, and philosophies was the mission of KSNS to extend the disciplinary boundary. In the 1990s, the progress of KSNS to become one of the woman-dominant healthcare professionals was the mission in the given period. Expanding the frontiers of KSNS to the extent of global standards was the undertaking of the nursing scholars in the 2000s. Lastly, in the 2010s, the quality and quantity improvement of KSNS and JKAN is expected to make our future even prosperous. The map visualization of the 50 years of research accumulation showed the comparable opposition of quantitative vs. qualitative research methodologies, equation modeling, and instrument development. Conclusion: These clusters of research demonstrates the efforts to make nursing evidence by Korean nursing scholars for the last five decades. The growth in the slope of KSNS and outcomes of JKAN are to carry on to an unimaginable extent in the future.

Effect of Heated Red Bean Pillow Application for College Women with Dysmenorrhea

        ( Kim Jeung Im ) 여성건강간호학회 2013 여성건강간호학회지 Vol.19 No.2

Dysmenorrhea is a menstrual condition characterized by severe and frequent cramps and pain. Effective treatment methods for dysmenorrhea are not yet fully understood. This research compares the effects of pain killers and heated red bean pillows. Methods: Data were got on demographic data, menstrual cycle status, and activities of daily living (ADLs) limitations, dysmenorrhea severity and menstrual pain scores. Following a 10% drop-out rate, 44 young women satisfied the inclusion criteria. To prevent any bias, the experimental and control groups were se-lected from different campuses. We used two sizes of red bean pillows: 15×18cm, weighing 400g; and 13×11.5cm, weighing 220g. For analysis, we used IBM SPSS statistics 19.0.Results: Ninety-nine point seven percentage of total subjects reported moderate to severe dysmenorrhea and 63.6% reported as moderate to severe daily activities limitations. The mean pain score with visual analogue scale was 80.2±9.42 of 100 and 86.4% used pain killers to alleviate menstrual discomfort in all the subjects In both groups, all three variables showed significant improvement and the Moos`s Menstrual Distress Questionnaire (MDQ) scores changed significantly between menstrual and post-menstrual time point at within groups and not significantly different at premenstrual and menstrual time point at between groups. However, the MDQ score was significantly higher in experimental group than control group at post-menstruation time point and the degree of satisfaction was higher in the control group. Conclusion: This research shows that red-bean pillows on the abdomen are effective in assisting the ADL and diminishing pain severity. With regard to its safety the study indicates it can be a convenient and safe option for female students with menstrual dis-comfort in schoolas a non-pharmacological self-help.
