A new support vector machine with an optimal additive kernel
Baek, Jeonghyun,Kim, Euntai Elsevier 2019 Neurocomputing Vol.329 No.-
<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Although the kernel support vector machine (SVM) outperforms linear SVM, its application to real world problems is limited because the evaluation of its decision function is computationally very expensive due to kernel expansion. On the other hand, additive kernel (AK) SVM enables fast evaluation of a decision function using look-up tables (LUTs). The AKs, however, assume a specific functional form for kernels such as the intersection kernel (IK) or <I>χ</I> 2 kernel, and are problematic in that their performance is seriously degraded when a given problem is highly nonlinear. To address this issue, an optimal additive kernel (OAK) is proposed in this paper. The OAK does not assume any specific kernel form, but the kernel is represented by a quantized Gram table. The training of the OAK SVM is formulated as semi-definite programming (SDP), and it is solved by convex optimization. In the experiment, the proposed method is tested with 2D synthetic datasets, UCI repository datasets and LIBSVM datasets. The experimental results show that the proposed OAK SVM has better performance than the previous AKs and RBF kernel while maintaining fast computation using look-up tables.</P>

Vol.2013 No.10
Hand posture classification has attracted much attention in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). In hand posture classification, vision based approach is popularly used. However, it has difficulty of dealing with illumination change and pose variation. In this paper, we compare the performance of combination with features, which are HOG, LBP, and classifiers, which are SVM and Neural Network for hand posture classification. Experiments are performed with Cambridge hand gesture dataset.

<P>For reliable driving assistance or automated driving, pedestrian detection must be robust and performed in real time. In pedestrian detection, a linear support vector machine (linSVM) is popularly used as a classifier but exhibits degraded performance due to the multipostures of pedestrians. Kernel SVM (KSVM) could be a better choice for pedestrian detection, but it has a disadvantage in that it requires too much more computation than linSVM. In this paper, the cascade implementation of the additive KSVM (AKSVM) is proposed for the application of pedestrian detection. AKSVM avoids kernel expansion by using lookup tables, and it is implemented in cascade form, thereby speeding up pedestrian detection. The cascade implementation is trained by a genetic algorithm such that the computation time is minimized, whereas the detection accuracy is maximized. In experiments, the proposed method is tested with the INRIA dataset. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method has better detection accuracy and reduced computation time compared with conventional methods.</P>

Vol.2012 No.10
This paper presents an efficient algorithm to set adaptive ROI for detecting pedestrians in a moving vehicle environment. The algorithm analyzes the centroid of detected pedestrian in current frame and define centroid region where centroids of detected pedestrian are concentrated. Based on centroid region, adaptive ROI is updated for each different size of detection window in next frame. Experiments are conducted with the Caltech pedestrian dataset and proposed method not only reduces computation time but also maintains performance of conventional methods.

In intelligent robot research, hand gesture recognition has been an important issue. And techniques that recognize simple gestures are commercialized in smart phone, smart TV for swiping screen or volume control. For gesture recognition, robust hand detection is important and necessary but it is challenging because hand shape is complex and hard to be detected in cluttered background, variant illumination. In this paper, we propose efficient hand detection algorithm for detecting pointing hand for recognition of place where user pointed. To minimize false detections, ROIs are generated within the compact search region using skin color detection result. The ROIs are verified by HOG-SVM and pointing direction is computed by both detection results of head-shoulder and hand. In experiment, it is shown that proposed method shows good performance for hand detection.

NASA(National Aeronautics and the Space Administration)에서 정한 요구 사항 및 제약 조건을 충족할 수 있도록 고려하였다.
