• Tumor detection from enhanced magnetic resonance imaging using fuzzy curvelet

Jaffar, M. Arfan,Ain, Quratul,Choi, Tae Sun Wiley Subscription Services, Inc., A Wiley Company 2012 Microscopy research and technique Vol.75 No.4

Abstract

Effective medical image analysis is possible by the use of technique known as segmentation. Segmentation is a very challenging task because there is not any standard segmentation method is available for any medical application. In this article, we have proposed an automatic brain MR image segmentation method. Fast discrete curvelet transform and spatial fuzzy C‐mean algorithm is used for noise removal and segmentation of brain MR image. Fuzzy entropy has been used for calculating adaptive and optimal threshold to separate out the image segments. Our proposed system is exclusively based on the information contained by the image itself. No extra information and no human intervention are required in our proposed system. We have tested our proposed system on different T1, T2 and PD brain MR images. Microsc. Res. Tech., 2011. © 2011 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.

      • Assessment of structural behavior of reinforced concrete slab ceiling under full load test in a residential complex project

        Jaffar A. Kadim,Oday A. Abdulrazzaq,Abdulamir A. Karim,Aqeel H. Chkheiwer 국제구조공학회 2024 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.89 No.6

This research deals with the process of conducting a reinforced concrete slab loading test of a Residential Complex Project at the Shatt Al Arab District which is located in southern Iraq. The purpose of the test which represents a destructive test is to evaluate the structural behavior of the slab condition state during and after the examination of the test process in order to ascertain the ability of the slab ceiling to withstand the loads generated during the use of the building. The test was carried out accordant to ACI 437.2-13 code. The reason for this test is the postponed 8 years of building project construction. Concrete blocks were used to simulate and conduct a loading test of 30-tons for 3 days. The central point has been installed to measure the slab deflection that occurred during the test. The results showed that both the total deflection and residual deflections were lesser than the permissible values according to the ACI 437.2-13, the RC slab behavior was mainly linear structural behave, and that the purpose of the examination was achieved. Finally, a new method was introduced to the assessment of the slab condition at the support which is found in good condition.

      • Building Hybrid Stop-Words Technique with Normalization for Pre-Processing Arabic Text

Atwan, Jaffar International Journal of Computer ScienceNetwork S 2022 International journal of computer science and netw Vol.22 No.7

In natural language processing, commonly used words such as prepositions are referred to as stop-words; they have no inherent meaning and are therefore ignored in indexing and retrieval tasks. The removal of stop-words from Arabic text has a significant impact in terms of reducing the size of a cor- pus text, which leads to an improvement in the effectiveness and performance of Arabic-language processing systems. This study investigated the effectiveness of applying a stop-word lists elimination with normalization as a preprocessing step. The idea was to merge statistical method with the linguistic method to attain the best efficacy, and comparing the effects of this two-pronged approach in reducing corpus size for Ara- bic natural language processing systems. Three stop-word lists were considered: an Arabic Text Lookup Stop-list, Frequency- based Stop-list using Zipf's law, and Combined Stop-list. An experiment was conducted using a selected file from the Arabic Newswire data set. In the experiment, the size of the cor- pus was compared after removing the words contained in each list. The results showed that the best reduction in size was achieved by using the Combined Stop-list with normalization, with a word count reduction of 452930 and a compression rate of 30%.

      • Development Web-based Arabic Assessments for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Students

Atwan, Jaffar,Wedyan, Mohammad,Abbas, Abdallah,Gazzawe, Foziah,Alturki, Ryan International Journal of Computer ScienceNetwork S 2022 International journal of computer science and netw Vol.22 No.5

Arabic skills are the tools by which children are prepared for the educational procedures on which their life depends. Deaf and hard of hearing students (DHH), must be able to grasp the same Arabic terms as hearing students and their different meanings in a context of different sentences less than what they are supposed to be due to their inability. However, problems arise in the same Arabic word and their different meanings in a context for (DHH) students since the way of comprehending such words does not meet the needs and circumstances of (DHH) students. Therefore, researchers introduce web-based method for Arabic words and their meanings in a context prototype that can overcome those problems. Methodology: The study sample consists of 30 (DHH) students at Al Amal City of Palestine, Gaza Region (GR). Those participants that agreed to take part in this study were recruited using a purposeful sampling method. Additionally, to examine the survey information descriptively, the Statistical Packages for social Sciences (SPSS) version 24.0 was used. A sign language teaching movie is utilized in the prototype to standardize the process and verify that Arabic vocabulary and their implications are comprehended. The Evolutionary Process Model of Prototype technique was utilized to create this system. Finding: The findings of this study show that the prototype built is workable and has the ability to help DHHS differentiate between phrases that have the same letters but distinct meanings. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to a better understanding and application of Development of Web-based Arabic Assessments for (DHH) Students in developing countries, which will help to increase the use of Development of Web-based Arabic for (HDD) students in those countries. The empirical models of Web-based Arabic for (DHH) students are established as a proof of concept for the proposed model. The results of this study are predicted to have a significant impact to the information system practitioners and to the body of knowledge.

Determinants of Tax Aggressiveness: Empirical Evidence from Malaysia

Rosmaria JAFFAR,Chek DERASHID,Roshaiza TAHA 한국유통과학회 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.5

The purpose of this study is to examine the level of aggressive tax planning (ATP) among companies listed in the Access, Certainty, Efficiency (ACE) Market of Bursa Malaysia. On top of that, this study also investigates the relationship between company characteristics, ethnicity, and ATP. This study uses a balanced pooled sample of 105 firm years-observations for the period from 2014 to 2018. These samples were selected to provide new insight into this market and to explore the attitude of small firms toward ATP in Malaysia. The data was retrieved from DataStream and the downloaded annual reports. The finding shows that profitability and financial distress have a significant relationship with ATP. Other variables including size, capital intensity, inventory intensity, leverage, and ethnicity, were not determinants of ATP. The result in this study may assist the reader in understanding the nature of companies in the ACE market, particularly on its behavior toward tax planning. A strict requirement is needed to be adopted in the sample selection process, thus limiting the sample size. Further, since the previous study focused on large companies, the discussion of this paper will provide new insight into the nature of tax planning within the small- and medium-sized companies in Malaysia.

Polylactic acid/epoxidized palm oil/fatty nitrogen compounds modified clay nanocomposites: Preparation and characterization

Emad Abbas Jaffar Al-Mulla 한국화학공학회 2011 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.28 No.2

Clay modification was carried out by treatment of fatty nitrogen compounds (FNCs); fatty hydrazide (FH),hydroxy methyl fattyamide (HMFA), and difatty acyl thiourea (DFAT) were synthesized from vegetable oils with a sodium montmorillonite (MMT) as natural clay. This process was accomplished by stirring the clay particles in an aqueous solution of FH, HMFA, and DFAT, by which the clay layer thickness increased from 1.23 to 2.69, 2.89 and 3.21nm, respectively. The modified clay was then used in the preparation of the polylactic acid/epoxidized palm oil (PLA/EPO) blend nanocomposites. The interaction of the modifier in the clay layer was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Elemental analysis was used to estimate the presence of FNCs in the clay. The nanocomposites were synthesized by solution casting of the modified clay and a PLA/EPO blend at the weight ratio of 80/20, which has the highest elongation at break. The nanocomposites were then characterized using XRD,transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and tensile properties measurements. Improvement in mechanical properties of the FH-MMT, HMFA-MMT, and DFAT-MMT nanocomposites was obtained when 2% of the DFAT-MMT and 3% of both FH-MMT and HMFA-MMT loadings were used. PLA/EPO modified clay nanocomposites show higher thermal stability in comparison with those of the PLA/EPO blend. The XRD and TEM results confirmed the production of nanocomposites.

Application of Tactile Slippage Sensation Algorithm in Robot Hand Control System

Yussof, Hanafiah,Jaffar, Ahmed,Zahari, Nur Ismarrubie,Ohka, Masahiro Korea Society of Industrial Information Systems 2012 한국산업정보학회논문지 Vol.17 No.4

This paper presents application of a new tactile slippage sensation algorithm in robot hand control system. The optical three-axis tactile sensor is a type of tactile sensor capable of defining normal and shear forces simultaneously. The tactile sensor is mounted on fingertip of robotic hand. Shear force distribution is used to define slippage sensation in the robot hand system. Based on tactile slippage analysis, a new control algorithm was proposed. To improve performance during object handling motions, analysis of slippage direction is conducted. The control algorithm is classified into two phases: grasp-move-release and grasp-twist motions. Detailed explanations of the control algorithm based on the existing robot arm control system are presented. The experiment is conducted using a bottle cap, and the results reveal good performance of the proposed control algorithm to accomplish the proposed object handling motions.
