      • A new approach for turn-on fluorescence sensing of L-DOPA

        Wang, L.,Su, D.,Berry, S.,Lee, J.,Chang, Y. T. Royal Society of Chemistry 2017 Chemical communications Vol.53 No.92

<P>A novel design strategy for the fluorescence sensing of L-DOPA is reported. Resa-Sulf displays a significant turn-on fluorescence response to L-DOPA due to its reduction properties; this sensing mechanism was fully confirmed by mechanistic studies. Furthermore, Resa-Sulf was successfully utilized to quantitatively detect L-DOPA concentrations from a commercially available source.</P>

Effects of Tween 80 on In Vitro Fermentation of Silages and Interactive Effects of Tween 80, Monensin and Exogenous Fibrolytic Enzymes on Growth Performance by Feedlot Cattle

        Wang, Y.,McAllister, T.A.,Baah, J.,Wilde, R.,Beauchemin, K.A.,Rode, L.M.,Shelford, J.A.,Kamande, G.M.,Cheng, K.J. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2003 Animal Bioscience Vol.16 No.7

The effects of monensin, Tween 80 and exogenous fibrolytic enzymes on ruminal fermentation and animal performance were studied in vitro and in vivo. In Expt 1, the effects of the surfactant Tween 80 (0.2% wt/wt, DM basis) on ruminal fermentation of alfalfa, corn and orchardgrass silages were investigated using in vitro gas production techniques. Tween 80 did not affect (p>0.05) cumulative gas production at 24 h, but it reduced (p<0.05) the lag in fermentation of all three silages. With corn silage and orchardgrass silage, gas production rates and concentrations of total volatile fatty acids (VFA) were increased (p<0.05) by Tween 80; with alfalfa silage, they were reduced (p<0.05). Tween 80 increased (p<0.05) the proportion of propionate in total VFA, and reduced (p<0.05) acetate to propionate ratios (A:P) with all three silages. In Expt 2, exogenous fibrolytic enzymes (E; at 0, 37.5 or 75 g/tonne DM), monensin (M; at 0 or 25 ppm and Tween 80 (T; at 0 or 2 L/tonne DM) were added alone or in combination to backgrounding and finishing diets fed to 320 crossbred steers in a feeding trial with a $3{\times}2{\times}$2 factorial arrangement of treatments. The backgrounding and finishing diets contained barley grain and barley silage in ratios of 57.8:42.2 and 93.5:6.5 (DM basis), respectively. Added alone, none of the additives affected DM intake (p>0.1) in the backgrounding or in the finishing period, but interactive $M{\times}T$ effects were observed in the finishing period (p=0.02) and overall (p=0.04). In the finishing period, T without M tended to reduce DM intake (p=0.11), but T with M increased (p=0.05) DM intake. Monensin increased average daily gain (ADG) during backgrounding (p=0.07) and finishing (p=0.01), and this ionophore also improved overall feed efficiency (p=0.02). Warm carcass weight was increased (p<0.001) by M, but dressing percentage was reduced (p=0.07). In the backgrounding period, T increased ADG by 7% (p=0.06). Enzymes increased (p=0.07) ADG by 5 and 6% (low and high application rates, respectively) during backgrounding, but did not affect (p>0.10) ADG during finishing, or overall feed efficiency. Whereas T enhanced the positive effects of M on ADG during backgrounding (p=0.04) and overall (p=0.05), it had no impact (p>0.1) on the effects of E. Interactions between M and T suggest that the surfactant may have potential for enhancing the positive effects of monensin on beef production, but this requires further research.

      • X-Ray Study of Variable Gamma-Ray Pulsar PSR J2021+4026

        Wang, H. H.,Takata, J.,Hu, C.-P.,Lin, L. C. C.,Zhao, J. American Astronomical Society 2018 The Astrophysical journal Vol.856 No.2

<P>PSR J2021+4026 showed a sudden decrease in the gamma-ray emission at the glitch that occurred around 2011 October 16, and a relaxation of the flux to the pre-glitch state at around 2014 December. We report X-ray analysis results of the data observed by XMM-Newton on 2015 December 20 in the post-relaxation state. To examine any change in the X-ray emission, we compare the properties of the pulse profiles and spectra at the low gamma-ray flux state and at the post-relaxation state. The phase-averaged spectra for both states can be well described by a power-law component plus a blackbody component. The former is dominated by unpulsed emission and probably originated from the pulsar wind nebula as reported by Hui et al. The emission property of the blackbody component is consistent with the emission from the polar cap heated by the back-flow bombardment of the high-energy electrons or positrons that were accelerated in the magnetosphere. We found no significant change in the X-ray emission properties between two states. We suggest that the change of the X-ray luminosity is at an order of similar to 4%, which is difficult to measure with the current observations. We model the observed X-ray light curve with the heated polar cap emission, and we speculate that the observed large pulsed fraction is owing to asymmetric magnetospheric structure.</P>

Magnetic and Magneto-Optical Properties of Co-Sputtering FePt Films

        J. Gao,B. Ma,C.L. Zha,Q.Y. Jin,S.Y. Wang,Z.Z. Zhang 한국물리학회 2006 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.49 No.5I

FePt thin .lms have been prepared at dierent substrate temperatures by DC magnetron co-sputtering. The .lms change from a disordered fcc structure to a L10 fct structure with temperature. The magnetic and the magneto-optical properties of those FePt .lms have been studied. The dependence of spectral changes on the formation of a chemically-ordered L10structure is observed in the polar magneto-optical Kerr rotation. In the spectra, the ultraviolet peak located in the high-energy range (4.0 { 4.5 eV), which is related to electronic transitions on Pt atomic sites, is observed for all samples. On the contrary, the peak related to transitions on Fe atomic sites, which is located in the low-energy range (1.5 { 2.0 eV), is only observed for highly chemically-ordered samples. Compared with the spectra for the L10 structure of FePt .lms pre- pared by using molecular beam epitaxy, the infrared peak related to Fe sites is shifted to low energy.

Synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of ultra-high purity CrO2 prepared under high O2-gas pressure

        Wang, X.L.,Si, P.Z.,Ge, H.L.,Shinde, K.P.,Chung, K.C.,Choi, C.J. Elsevier 2017 SOLID STATE SCIENCES Vol.67 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Ultra-high purity CrO2 was prepared by decomposing CrO3 in O2 with gas pressures up to 40 MPa, which were maintained throughout the decomposition process of CrO3 to prevent the formation of any other phases of chromium oxides. Our method is different from the traditional methods that start from or under ambient pressures. The high oxygen pressure makes the meta-stable CrO2 stable from the initial stage of preparation. As a result, the purity of the as-prepared CrO2 is improved, and this has been further proved by the highest magnetization of the samples. The as-prepared CrO2 particles show very large grains with flat surfaces, octagonal cross-section, and straight edges, owing to the high mobility of Cr ions in CrO2 at temperatures above its melting point. The lattice parameters of CrO2 are <I>a</I> = 4.4176 Å and <I>c</I> = 2.9144 Å. The maximum value of the magnetic entropy change of the high purity CrO2 particles is ∼2.83 J/kg·K for an applied field of 1.5 T. The preparation of pure CrO2 is important for studying its intrinsic properties and for applications in spintronic devices.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Ultra-high purity CrO2 was prepared. </LI> <LI> High O2-gas pressure was employed. </LI> <LI> The CrO2 rods show straight edges and high magnetization. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

The Effect of High CO2 Treatment and MA Packaging on Asparagus Quality and Shelf Life during Cold Storage

        ( Wang,L. X. ),( I. L. Choi ),( J. H. Lee ),( H. M. Kang ) 강원대학교 농업생명과학연구원(구 농업과학연구소) 2019 강원 농업생명환경연구 Vol.31 No.2

Oxygen transmission rate (OTR) films of 1,300 and 10,000 cc/m2/day/atm, perforated (P), micro-perforated (MP), and vacuum (V) films were investigated for suitability in maintaining the quality and prolonging shelf life of asparagus during cold storage. An additional investigation using 60% (v/v) carbon dioxide treatment (V + 60% CO2) was also performed. All samples lost fresh weight over time, P and V + 60% CO2 had the highest and lowest fresh weight loss rate by the last day. Only 1,300 cc and 10,000 cc OTR films kept the asparagus at a marketable value, the least off-odor was detected in P, and the worst was in V + 60% CO2 in final day. The V + 60% CO2 resulted in lower firmness in asparagus tips, and the V resulted in the lowest firmness in stems. Although, little color changes happened in all treatments, the V + 60% CO2 treatment had greater soluble solids content and hue angle. The highest ethylene concentration was detected in the V film. The CO2 and O2 levels of the 1,300 cc and 10,000 cc OTR treatments were more suitable for asparagus storage. In general, based on the visual quality, 1,300 cc and 10,000 cc OTR films were more effective for asparagus cold storage. To some extent, high CO2 treatment exhibited a positive effect on maintaining internal quality, fresh weight and color of asparagus.

      • DISCOVERY OF X-RAY PULSATION FROM THE GEMINGA-LIKE PULSAR PSR J2021+4026

        Lin, L. C. C.,Hui, C. Y.,Hu, C. P.,Wu, J. H. K.,Huang, R. H. H.,Trepl, L.,Takata, J.,Seo, K. A.,Wang, Y.,Chou, Y.,Cheng, K. S. IOP Publishing 2013 ASTROPHYSICAL JOURNAL LETTERS - Vol.770 No.1

<P>We report the discovery of an X-ray periodicity of similar to 265.3 ms from a deep XMM-Newton observation of the radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsar, PSR J2021+4026, located at the edge of the supernova remnant G78.2+2.1 (gamma-Cygni). The detected frequency is consistent with the gamma-ray pulsation determined by the observation of the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope at the same epoch. The X-ray pulse profile resembles the modulation of a hot spot on the surface of the neutron star. The phase-averaged spectral analysis also suggests that the majority of the observed X-rays have thermal origins. This is the third member in the class of radio-quiet pulsars with significant pulsations detected from both X-ray and gamma-ray regimes.</P>

Effects of L-tryptophan, Fructan, and Casein on Reducing Ammonia, Hydrogen Sulfide, and Skatole in Fermented Swine Manure

        Sheng, Q.K.,Yang, Z.J.,Zhao, H.B.,Wang, X.L.,Guo, J.F. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2015 Animal Bioscience Vol.28 No.8

The effects of daily dietary Bacillus subtilis (Bs), and adding L-tryptophan, fructan, or casein to fecal fermentation broths were investigated as means to reduce the production of noxious gas during manure fermentation caused by ammonia, hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$), and 3-methylindole (skatole). Eighty swine ($50.0{\pm}0.5kg$) were equally apportioned to an experimental group given Bs in daily feed, or a control group without Bs. After 6 weeks, fresh manure was collected from both groups for fermentation studies using a $3{\times}3$ orthogonal array, in which tryptophan, casein, and fructan were added at various concentrations. After fermentation, the ammonia, $H_2S$, L-tryptophan, skatole, and microflora were measured. In both groups, L-tryptophan was the principle additive increasing skatole production, with significant correlation (r = 0.9992). L-tryptophan had no effect on the production of ammonia, $H_2S$, or skatole in animals fed Bs. In both groups, fructan was the principle additive that reduced $H_2S$ production (r = 0.9981). Fructan and Bs significantly interacted in $H_2S$ production (p = 0.014). Casein was the principle additive affecting the concentration of ammonia, only in the control group. Casein and Bs significantly interacted in ammonia production (p = 0.039). The predominant bacteria were Bacillus spp. CWBI B1434 (26%) in the control group, and Streptococcus alactolyticus AF201899 (36%) in the experimental group. In summary, daily dietary Bs reduced ammonia production during fecal fermentation. Lessening L-tryptophan and increasing fructan in the fermentation broth reduced skatole and $H_2S$.
