      • Evaluation of bending strength of carburized gears

        The reduction of size and weight is one of the important objectives for the development of advanced power transmission gear system. It is realized by increasing the load carrying capacity of the gears. From this point of view, this article summarizes our research on the evaluation of bending fatigue strength of carburized gears, and presents an experimental formula, which has been derived for estimating the strength from the surface and the core hardnesses and the surface residual stress, and the effect of surface treatments such as shot peening and chemical polishing on the strength enhancement of carburized gears.

        Screening of nucleon electric dipole moments in nuclei

        <P>A partial screening of nucleon electric dipole moments (EDMs) in nuclear systems, which is related to the Schiff mechanism known for neutral atomic systems, is discussed. It is shown that the direct contribution from the neutron EDM to the deuteron EDM is partially screened by about 1% in a zero-range approximation calculation.</P>

        Changes in Serum Biochemical Markers of Bone Cell Activity in Growing Thoroughbred Horses

        We studied the changes in biochemical markers of bone metabolism in growing Thoroughbred horses. Serum osteocalcin (OC), as a marker for bone formation, and carboxy-terminal propeptide of type-I collagen (PICP), as a marker for bone formation, carboxy-terminal telopeptide of type-I collagen (ICTP), as a marker for bone resorption, were determined in nine clinically healthy horses from 3 d to 17 mo of age. The BW and withers height (WH) increased during the study. On the other hand, a rapid reduction in body weight gain (BWG) was observed between 1 mo and 9 mo of age and a rapid reduction in withers height gain was observed between 1 mo and 5 mo of age. The serum markers decreased significantly with increasing age. In particular, dramatic changes in serum markers occurred between 3 d to 1 wk and 5 to 7 mo of age in these horses, which suggests that bone turnover rapidly decreased after birth. On the other hand, the ratio of PICP to ICTP decreased through the experiment. This result suggests that the reduction in bone formation exceeded that of bone resorption. There was a significant correlation between markers and growth parameters, except for the correlation between PICP and BWG on single linear regression analysis. Serum OC and ICTP were affected by the WH in multiple linear regression analysis. These results indicated that the age-related variation in serum biochemical markers of bone metabolism reflected bone growth, but neither BW nor BWG. Therefore, we consider that changes in bone modeling are the major factor affecting the levels of serum biochemical markers by 17 mo of age in horses.

        MAGNETOHYDRODYNAMIC SIMULATION OF THE X2.2 SOLAR FLARE ON 2011 FEBRUARY 15. I. COMPARISON WITH THE OBSERVATIONS

        <P>We performed a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation using a nonlinear force-free field (NLFFF) in solar active region 11158 to clarify the dynamics of an X2.2-class solar flare. We found that the NLFFF never shows the dramatic dynamics seen in observations, i.e., it is in a stable state against the perturbations. On the other hand, the MHD simulation shows that when the strongly twisted lines are formed at close to the neutral line, which are produced via tether-cutting reconnection in the twisted lines of the NLFFF, they consequently erupt away from the solar surface via the complicated reconnection. This result supports the argument that the strongly twisted lines formed in NLFFF via tether-cutting reconnection are responsible for breaking the force balance condition of the magnetic fields in the lower solar corona. In addition to this, the dynamical evolution of these field lines reveals that at the initial stage the spatial pattern of the footpoints caused by the reconnection of the twisted lines appropriately maps the distribution of the observed two-ribbon flares. Interestingly, after the flare, the reconnected field lines convert into a structure like the post-flare loops, which is analogous to the extreme ultraviolet image taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory. Eventually, we found that the twisted lines exceed a critical height at which the flux tube becomes unstable to the torus instability. These results illustrate the reliability of our simulation and also provide an important relationship between flare and coronal mass ejection dynamics.</P>

        戰後日本と小林勝 -「フォ一ド,一九二七年」の場所の構成と戰爭認識-

        本稿は、小林勝の「フォ一ド·一九二七年」における主人公の戰爭認識についての變移について考察するものである。この小說は1956年に發表され、小林勝作品の中ではじめて植民地朝鮮を題材にした作品であり、彼にとっては分岐点ともいえる作品である。この小說は1945年後の中國濟南を中心として構成されており、1930年代の植民地朝鮮、1940年代の東京、1944年の植民地朝鮮と樣同な空間と場所が登場している。そしてこの場所は慘敗兵となった主人公の〈回想〉を通して移動しており、その移動は、主人公の成長過程ともいえる。しかし、その成長は15年戰爭と同時平行的に行なわれ、主人公の成長過程は、戰爭認識の形成と置き換えることが可能である。特に本稿では、この場所の移動に注目をし、各場所が回想するにあたってどのような意味をなしているのかを調査した。すると、各場所は、主人公の單なる思い出というだけでなく、場所と主人公の戰爭認識は密接な關係にあることが見えてきた。 This article is to study the novel “Ford-1927” by Kobayashi Masaru, focusing on the protagonist’s perception changes about war. This novel, published in 1956, is the first work for Kobayashi Masaru to write about the colonised Chosun dynasty, and it is considered as a turning point for the author. With the main background of the story being post-1945 Jinan, China, there appear various settings such as the colonised Chosun in the 1930s, Tokyo in the 1940s, and the colonised Chosun in 1944. The background of the story changes as the protagonist reminisces about the past, who is a remnant of the lost war. The changes in the setting could be considered as representation of his growth. However, the growth occurs in parallel with the 15-year-war, thus the growth process of the main character could be transferred as his perception transformation of the war. In this article, we focused on the changes in the settings and researched the meanings of each backdrop that is recalled by the main character. Our research revealed that each setting is not merely the protagonist’s memory. Rather, they are closely related to the main character’s perception of the war.

      • FATE OF TRICRESYL PHOSPHATE ISOMERS IN KUROSE RIVER(JAPAN)

        Origin and fate of TCP isomers were studied in Kurose River, Hiroshima, Japan. As main factors to control the fate, the adsorption characteristics of TCP isomers onto sediment and biodegradation in river water and sediment were studied. Concentration of TCP isomers in river water, sediment and SS were the highest in autumn. It was about ten times as large as that in winter. High concentration of o-TCP was noted except for spring. Different from other seasons, the concentrations of o-TCP was relatively low and m-TCP was not detected in summer. These variation seemed to be due to the difference in the rate of biodegradation with temperature. The concentrations of TCP isomers increased with the increase in flow rate under flooding condition. TCP in the river originated from non-point sources and not from wastewaters nor equilibrium was observed between bottom sediment and river water indicating TCP was biodegraded rapidly in the bottom sediment. The biodegradation rate in the sediment was the lowest for o-TCP and the highest for p-TCP. The biodegradation rate of m-TCP was small under low temperature, whereas it was large in high temperature above 20℃. The most biodegradable isomer, p-TCP, was not detected in most cases.

        Simple Method for the Local Stakeholdersto Evaluate and Select National REDD-plus Program: A Case Study of Indonesia

        In order not to hinder the trend of promoting participatory forest management under the REDD-plus mechanism, we propose a simple method to support local stakeholders evaluating and selecting promising national programs as REDD-plus activities prior to the launch of activities. Program evaluation is done from the viewpoint of expectations for achieving (1) 'triple-benefit' consisting of emission reduction from mitigating deforestation and forest degradation, biodiversity conservation, and poverty alleviation, and (2) 'feasibility' when the programs would be practiced on the ground. The method is applicable for other countries.
