Objective: Oocyte degeneration often occurs after intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), and the risk factor is low-quality oocytes. The follicular fluid (FF) provides a crucial microenvironment for oocyte development. We investigated the relationships between the FF volume aspirated from individual follicles and oocyte retrieval, oocyte maturity, oolemma stretchability, fertilization, and development. Methods: This retrospective study included data obtained from 229 ICSI cycles. Ovarian stimulation was performed according to a gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist protocol. Each follicle was individually aspirated and divided into six groups according to FF volume ( < 1.0, 1.0 to < 2.0, 2.0 to < 3.0, 3.0 to < 4.0, 4.0 to < 5.0, and ${\geq}5.0mL$). Oolemma stretchability during ICSI was evaluated using a mechanical stimulus for oolemma penetration, that is, the stretchability was assessed by oolemma penetration with aspiration (high stretchability) or without aspiration (low stretchability). Results: Oocyte retrieval rates were significantly lower in the < 1.0 mL group than in the ${\geq}1.0mL$ groups (46.0% [86/187] vs. 67.5%-74.3% [172/255 to 124/167], respectively; p< 0.01). Low oolemma stretchability was significantly more common in the < 1.0 mL group than in the ${\geq}1.0mL$ groups during ICSI (22.0% [13/59] vs. 5.8%-9.4% [6/104 to 13/139], respectively; p= 0.018). There was a relationship between FF volume and oolemma stretchability. However, there were no significant differences in the rates of fertilization, cleavage, ${\geq}7$ cells at day 3, and blastocyst development among all groups. Conclusion: FF volume is potentially associated with the stretchability of metaphase II oolemma during ICSI. Regarding oolemma stretchability, ensuring a uniform follicular size during ovarian stimulation is crucial to obtain good-quality oocytes.

In authors' paper in 2007, it was shown that the BSE-extension of $C^1_0(R)$, the algebra of continuously differentiable functions f on the real number space R such that f and df /dx vanish at infinity, is the Lipschitz algebra $Lip_1(R)$. This paper extends this result to the case of $C^n_0(R^d)$ and $C^{n-1,1}_b(R^d)$, where n and d represent arbitrary natural numbers. Here $C^n_0(R^d)$ is the space of all n-times continuously differentiable functions f on $R^d$ whose k-times derivatives are vanishing at infinity for k = 0, ${\cdots}$, n, and $C^{n-1,1}_b(R^d)$ is the space of all (n - 1)-times continuously differentiable functions on $R^d$ whose k-times derivatives are bounded for k = 0, ${\cdots}$, n - 1, and (n - 1)-times derivatives are Lipschitz. As a byproduct of our investigation we obtain an important result that $C^{n-1,1}_b(R^d)$ has a predual.
Improved 3D integral imaging reconstruction with elemental image pixel rearrangement
Inoue, Kotaro,Lee, Min-Chul,Javidi, Bahram,Cho, Myungjin IOP 2018 Journal of optics Vol.20 No.2

Computational reconstruction of integral imaging requires much more computational loads than optical reconstruction because of the adding and averaging of many elemental images digitally. Thus, to reduce the computational loads, the pixels of elemental images rearrangement technique (PERT) has been proposed. It can reconstruct a three-dimensional (3D) image very fast, but the size of the reconstructed 3D image is different from the conventional computational reconstruction due to no consideration of the empty space between pixels on the reconstruction plane. Therefore, in this paper, we propose PERT considering the projected empty space to correct the size of the reconstructed 3D images. To verify and support our proposed method, we carry out preliminary experiments and calculate the structural similarity index.

Objectives: This study was conducted to clarify the analgesic effect of toad cake and toad-cake-containing herbal drugs. Methods: We counted the writhing response of mice after the intraperitoneal administration of acetic acid as a nociceptive pain model and the withdrawal response after the plantar surface stimulation of the hind paw induced by partial sciatic nerve ligation of the mice as a neuropathic pain model to investigate the analgesic effect of toad cake and toad-cake-containing herbal drugs. A co-treatment study with serotonin biosynthesis inhibitory drug 4-chloro-DL-phenylalanine methyl ester hydrochloride (PCPA), the catecholamine biosynthesis inhibitory drug ${\alpha}$-methyl-DL-tyrosine methyl ester hydrochloride (AMPT) or the opioid receptor antagonist naloxone hydrochloride was also conducted. Results: Analgesic effects in a mouse model of nociceptive pain and neuropathic pain were shown by oral administration of toad cake and toad-cake-containing herbal drugs. The effects of toad cake and toad-cake-containing herbal drugs disappeared upon co-treatment with PCPA, but not with AMPT or naloxone in the nociceptive pain model; the analgesic effect of toad-cake-containing herbal drugs also disappeared upon co-treatment with PCPA in the neuropathic pain model. Conclusion: Toad cake and toad-cake-containing herbal drugs have potential for the treatments of nociceptive pain and of neuropathic pain, such as post-herpetic neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, diabetic neuralgia, and postoperative or posttraumatic pain, by activation of the central serotonin nervous system.
Changes of Serum Mineral Concentrations in Horses during Exercise
Inoue, Y.,Osawa, T.,Matsui, A.,Asai, Y.,Murakami, Y.,Matsui, T.,Yano, H. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2002 Animal Bioscience Vol.15 No.4
We investigated the exercise-induced changes in the serum concentration of several minerals in horses. Four welltrained Thoroughbred horses performed exercise for 5 d. The blood hemoglobin (Hb) concentration increased during exercise, recovered to the pre-exercise level immediately after cooling down and did not change again up till the end of experiment. The changes in serum zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) concentrations were similar to those of blood Hb during the experiment. The serum magnesium (Mg), inorganic phosphorus (Pi) and iron (Fe) concentrations also increased during exercise. Though the serum Pi concentration recovered to the pre-exercise level immediately after the cooling down, it decreased further before the end of the experiment. The serum Mg concentration was lower immediately after cooling down than its pre-exercise level but gradually recovered from the temporal reduction. The recovery of the serum Fe concentration was delayed compared to that of other minerals and recovered 2 h after cooling down. The serum calcium (Ca) concentration did not change during exercise but rapidly decreased after cooling down. As a result, it was lower immediately after cooling down than its pre-exercise level. It recovered, however, to the pre-exercise level 2 h after cooling down. The temporal increase in the serum concentrations of all minerals except Ca is considered to result from hemoconcentration induced by exercise and the stable concentration of the serum Ca during exercise is possibly due to its strict regulation of homeostasis. These results indicate that the serum concentration of each mineral responds differently to exercise in horses, which may be due to the difference in metabolism among these minerals.

FCCP (carbonyl cyanide-4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenylhydrazone) is known to inhibit oxidative phosphorylation as a protonophore, dissipating the proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane. To understand the toxicity of FCCP, 3-day, 2- and 4-week repeated oral dose studies were performed in male rats. In the 3-day and 2-week repeated dose toxicity studies, observations included salivation, increased body temperature, and dead and moribund animals. Increased liver weight was observed in conjunction with hydropic degeneration and centrilobular necrosis of hepatocytes. In addition, pathological changes were observed in the pancreas, testis, epididymal duct, stomach and parotid gland. Electron microscopic examination revealed mitochondrial pleomorphism in the hepatocytes. Swelling of mitochondria was observed in the alpha cells and beta cells of the pancreas. Dilatation of rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi bodies and loss of secretory granules were also noted in the beta cells of the pancreas. FCCP was also compared with three other mUncouplers (DNP, OPC-163493 and tolcapone) with regard to in vitro mitochondrial uncoupling (mUncoupling) activities. FCCP produced the peak ΔOCR (oxygen consumption rate) at the lowest concentration (0.4 μM), followed by OPC-163493, tolcapone, and DNP, based on peak values in ascending order of concentration (2.5, 10, and 50 μM, respectively). Considering the relationship between the mUncoupling activity and toxicity profile of the four mUncouplers, there is no parallel relationship between the in vitro mUncoupling activity and the degree of in vivo toxicity. These findings may contribute to the efficient development of new mitochondrial uncoupler candidates.
Status Aspirations and Gender Awareness of Women Undergraduates in Guam
Inoue, Yukiko Ewha Womans University Press 1999 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.5 No.4
This study examines the status aspirations of undergraduate women in Guam; their awareness of gender equality in employment, and how these affect their academic and social aspirations. A random sample of 350 students, which represented the culturally diverse setting of the study, was thus selected from the degree and non-degree programs of the Arts and Science faculties of the University of Guam (UOG). A questionnaire was administered to the sample and had a response rate of 32 percent. The respondents revealed a strong desire for pursuing careers, earning for themselves, and they did not perceive gender discrimination as a significant impediment in employment. Furthermore, no differences in attitudes and perceptions were identified between the two major ethnic groups-Chamorro and non-Chamorro. This may be due to the manner in which Guam has evolved and the kind of interaction students of the UOG have among themselves on campus. Implications of the study are discussed and some questions for future research are posed.
