This paper uses a disaggregated micro-model of the alcoholic beverage sector to investigate reforms of discriminatory pricing practices attributable to differential provincial markups and federal excise levies in Canada. The reform of markups has been demanded in a recent GATT ruling. We find that major changes in the structure of this industry could follow and that both provincial and federal government tax revenues respond to measures initiated by the other level of government. A cooperative tax reform strategy, which leaves each level of government with unchanged revenues, is then modeled. This entails major changes in trade patterns, relative outputs and producer revenues.
Integral nuclear data validation using experimental spent nuclear fuel compositions

Measurements of the isotopic contents of spent nuclear fuel provide experimental data that are a prerequisitefor validating computer codes and nuclear data for many spent fuel applications. Under theauspices of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Nuclear EnergyAgency (NEA) and guidance of the Expert Group on Assay Data of Spent Nuclear Fuel of the NEAWorkingParty on Nuclear Criticality Safety, a new database of expanded spent fuel isotopic compositions has beencompiled. The database, Spent Fuel Compositions (SFCOMPO) 2.0, includes measured data for more than750 fuel samples acquired from 44 different reactors and representing eight different reactor technologies. Measurements for more than 90 isotopes are included. This new database provides data essentialfor establishing the reliability of code systems for inventory predictions, but it also has broader potentialapplication to nuclear data evaluation. The database, together with adjoint based sensitivity and uncertaintytools for transmutation systems developed to quantify the importance of nuclear data onnuclide concentrations, are described.

Many whole cell screens of chemical libraries currently in use are based on inhibition of bacterial growth. The goal of this study was to develop a chemical library screening model that enabled detection of compounds that are active against drug-tolerant non-growing cultures of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. An in vitro model of low metabolically active mycobacteria was established with 8 and 30 day old cultures of M. smegmatis and M. tuberculosis, respectively. Reduction of resazurin was used as a measure of viability and the assay was applied in screens of chemical libraries for bactericidal compounds. The model provided cells that were phenotypically-resilient to killing by first and second-line clinical drugs including rifampicin. Screening against chemical libraries identified proteasome inhibitors, NSC310551 and NSC321206, and a structurally-related series of thiosemicarbazones,as having potent killing activity towards aged cultures. The inhibitors were confirmed as active against virulent M. tuberculosis strains including multi- and extensively-drug resistant clinical isolates. Our library screen enabled detection of compounds with a potent level of bactericidal activity towards phenotypically drug-tolerant cultures of M. tuberculosis.
Dupilumab Efficacy in Patients with GINA-Defined Type 2 Asthma: TRAVERSE

Background The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) 2020 report recommends add-on biologics for patients with type 2 asthma (≥150 blood eosinophils/μL or FeNO ≥20ppb, largely allergen-driven disease). Dupilumab, a fully human monoclonal antibody, blocks the shared receptor component for interleukin (IL)-4/13, key and central drivers of type 2 inflammation. In QUEST (NCT02414854), add-on dupilumab 200/300mg every 2 weeks vs placebo reduced exacerbations and improved forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) in patients with uncontrolled, moderate-to-severe asthma. TRAVERSE, a single-arm, open-label extension study (NCT02134028), evaluated the long-term safety and efficacy of dupilumab in patients from QUEST. The objective was to assess the long-term efficacy of dupilumab in patients according to baseline type 2 biomarkers and allergic status as suggested by GINA. Methods Patients who received dupilumab or placebo in QUEST received dupilumab 300mg in TRAVERSE for up to 96 weeks. We evaluated annualized severe exacerbation rate (AER) and pre-BD FEV1 in type 2 patients with/without evidence of allergic asthma phenotype (serum total IgE ≥30 IU/mL and ≥1 perennial aeroallergen-specific IgE ≥0.35kU/L at parent study baseline). Results Dupilumab reduced AERs and improved pre-BD FEV1 in patients with elevated eosinophils or FeNO. These effects were sustained throughout TRAVERSE (Table). Allergic phenotype did not influence the efficacy of dupilumab. Conclusions Dupilumab reduced severe exacerbations and improved FEV1 for up to 96 weeks in patients with type 2 inflammatory asthma as specified in recent GINA recommendations, irrespective of allergic phenotype.

We study the impact of experimental imperfections on a recently proposed protocol for performing quantum simulations of vibronic spectroscopy. Specifically, we propose a method for quantifying the impact of these imperfections, optimizing an experiment to account for them, and benchmarking the results against a classical simulation method. We illustrate our findings using a proof of principle experimental simulation of part of the vibronic spectrum of tropolone. Our findings will inform the design of future experiments aiming to simulate the spectra of large molecules beyond the reach of current classical computers.

GATT Rulings, Excise Reforms and Trade Patterns : The Alcoholic Beverages Industry in Canada

Personal Protective Equipment Availability and Utilization Among Interventionalists
André Rose,William Ian Duncombe Rae 한국산업안전보건공단 산업안전보건연구원 2019 Safety and health at work Vol.10 No.2
Objective: This study explored personal protective equipment (PPE) availability and PPE utilization among interventionalists in the catheterization laboratory, which is a highly contextualized workplace. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study using mixed methods. Participants (108) completed a survey. A hyperlink was sent to the participants, or they were asked to complete a paper-based survey. Purposively selected participants (54) were selected for individual (30) or group (six) interviews. The interviews were conducted at conferences, or appointments were made to see the participants. Logistic regression analysis was performed. The qualitative data were analyzed thematically. Results: Lead glasses were consistently used 10.2% and never used 61.1% of the time. All forms of PPE were inconsistently used by 92.6% of participants. Women were 4.3 times more likely to report that PPE was not available. PPE compliance was related to fit and availability. Conclusions: PPE use was inconsistent and not always available. Improving the culture of radiation protection in catheterization laboratories is essential to improve PPE compliance with the aim of protecting patients and operators. This culture of radiation protection must include all those involved including the users of PPE and the administrators and managers who are responsible for supplying sufficient, appropriate, fitting PPE for all workers requiring such protection.
