Butyltin and phenyltin residues were quantified in seawater and biota of the Chinhae Bay System, Korea in 1995. Butyltin compounds were detected in all seawater and biota samples, whereas phenyltin compounds were found only in the biota samples. Tributyltin (TBT) concentrations in seawater ranged from < 8-35 ng Sn/l. Tributyltin concentrations in Crassostyea gigas and Thais clavigera ranged from 95-885 and 23-414 ng Sn/g, respectively, Triphenyltin(TPhT) concentrations in each species ranged 155-678 and 46-785 ng Sn/g, respectively. Spatial distribution of TBT was closely related to boating and dry-docking activities. However, spatial distribution of TPhT was not consistent with that of TBT. The biological concentration factor for TBT in C. gigas was about 25000 that is four times greater than that of T. clavigera. Butyl- to phenyltin concentration ratio was greater than one in C. gigas, but that in T. clavigera was less than one. Major tissues of C. gigas also showed different accumulation patterns for butyl- and phenyltin compounds. Furthermore, 19 and 28% of total body burdens of TBT and TPhT were found in gonadal mass of C. gigas just prior to spawning.
Influences of Bending Temperature on the I$_{c}$ Degradation Behavior of Bi-2223 tapes under Bending

The I$_{c}$ degradation behavior of Bi-2223 tapes bent at RT and 77K were investigated using the bending device invented by Goldacker. Test results on fixing the tape at RT and 17K showed no difference. At 17K and RT bending, the critical strain was 0.67 and 0.50$\%$, respectively, for the VAM-l tape. For the AMSC tape, it was 0.94 and 0.88$\%$, respectively. These results show that there is additional residual stress in the superconducting filaments to be bent at 17K which shifts the formation of cracks into smaller bending radii. This was proved by computational analysis based on the mixture rule of composites. For the VAM-l tape, the Ie degradation behavior using the Goldacker type device shifted to higher strain levels at about 0.5$\%$, as compared with the FRP sample holders which have a critical bending strain of about 0.24$\%$. Also, for the externally reinforced AMSC tape, Ie degradation using the Goldacker type device begins at a higher strain level, at 0.88$\%$ as compared with using FRP sample holders, at 0.74$\%$. The difference between both cases can be explained by the tensile' and thermal stresses that the tapes were subjected to during fixing (soldering) when the FRP sample holders were used.

BACKGROUND: The annual incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) is increasing, and the treatment pattern of oral anticoagulants (OACs) has changed with introduction of new oral anticoagulants (NOACs). The aims of this study were to assess the annual incidence of VTE in a Korean population and the change of treatment pattern with availability of NOACs using a population-based database. METHODS: Using the Korean National Health Insurance Services database, we identified patients diagnosed with VTE between 2009 and 2016. The annual prevalence of VTE and clinical characteristics and treatment pattern were investigated. The annual incidence of VTE was calculated using direct and indirect methods using the estimated Korean population in 2009 as the reference. RESULTS: The annual incidence of VTE in Korean has increased yearly from 23.9 per 100,000 in 2009 to 42.2 in 2016. The overall rate of OAC prescription for VTE treatment increased from 55.9% to 68% in the same time period. The rate of initiation of NOAC treatment greatly increased, particularly from 2013 onwards, with a 20-fold increase from 2009 to 2016 (2.1% vs. 54.3%). CONCLUSIONS: The annual incidence of VTE in Korea increased by almost two-fold from 2009 to 2016. The rate of initiation of NOAC treatment has increased substantially since 2013, and these agents have surpassed VKAs as the anticoagulant of choice for VTE. This temporal pattern of OAC prescription is consistent with the current clinical guidelines, which indicate NOACs over the warfarin in patients with VTE.
