Proceedings of International Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. 201-211, 1999. -Nephroprotective effects of a crude drug-prearation (E-kong-san) were determined from cisplatin on rabbit kidney proximal tubule and human renal cortical cells by MTT assays and sustained glucose consumption on ciplatin-induced human renal cortical tissue. Levels of creatinine and blood ure nitrogen(BUN) in serum after administration of cisplatin(0.75mg/kg,i.p.) to E-kong-san(0.75g/kg/day,p.o.)-pretreated rats were markedly lower compared to those of cisplatin-treated rats. Moreover, the administration of E-kong-san significantly inhibited the loss of body weight of cisplatin injected rts. These findings suggest that E-kong-san on the cisplatin induced nephrotoxicity led us to investigate whether the effect of this water extract was a result of anti-oxidation. E-kong-san showed strong free radical scavenger activities on 1,1-dipheny1-2picrylhydrazil(DPPH) radical and xanthine/xanthine oxidase(XOD) generated superoxide anion radical(O2-). We further studied the effects of E-kong-san on lipid peroxidation in rat liver microsomes induced by enzymatic and nonenzymatic methods. E-kong-san exhibited significant inhibition on both ascorbic acid/Fe2+and ADP/NADPH/Fe3+ induced lipid peroxidation in rat liver microsomes. Based on these results, we suggest that-E-kong-san attenuate the cisplatin induced cytotoxicity and its mechanism can be eplained by antioxidant.

        석탄회를 이용한 석탄광산 폐기물의 안정화 효율성 평가

        본 연구는 다량의 중금속을 함유하는 폐석탄 광산에 적치된 폐석으로부터 발생하는 침출수의 안정화를 위해 석탄회를 안정화제로서의 적용성을 평가하는데 목적이 있다. 석탄폐석에 석탄회를 적용하여 컬럼시험을 수행한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1) 석탄회의 pH는 비산재와 바닥재가 각각 11.1, 9.7의 강알칼리성을 갖는 것으로 나타나 강산성 조건의 폐석 (pH 3.5)를 교정하였으며 유기물을 비롯하여 식물생장에 필요한 영양소인 인산, 칼슘 등을 함유하는 것으로 나타나 폐석과 혼합할 경우 비옥도가 개선될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. 2) 폐석만을 충진한 컬럼에서 발생하는 침출수의 pH는 3.5~4.0의 수준을 시험기간 동안 지속적으로 유지하는 것으로 나타나지만, 석탄회의 처리량에 따라 40% (pH 5.0~6.0) 〉 20% (pH 4.5)로 나타나고, 동일 처리량 (40%)의 처리방법에 따른 효율성은 완전혼합 (pH& & 5.0~6.0) 방법이 층위처리 (pH 4.0~4.5)에 비해 pH 상승효과가 높은 것으로 조사되었다. 3) 침출수의 Ca과 Mg의 함량은 4 pore volume까지 빠르게 용탈되다 그 이후부터 안정화 되었으며 석탄회에서 용탈된 Ca과 Mg의 영향으로 폐석에 함유되었던 Cu, Pb, As, 및 Al 등이 탄산이온 (CO₃<SUP>2-</SUP>) 또는 수산화이온 (OH-)과 불용성 화합물을 형성하여 안정화 되는 것으로 사료된다. 4) 철의 용존함유량에 대한 분석결과 석탄회 처리구의 용존량이 석탄회를 40% 층위처리한 처리구를 제외하고 대조구에 비해 약 8-74% 정도 감소하는 것으로 조사 되었다. 5) 석탄회를 이용한 폐석의 중화 및 철의 용존량 감소 효율성을 평가한 결과 폐석의 중화 효율성은 석탄회를 40% 완전혼합한 경우 가장 높았으며 철의 용존량 감소 효율성은 석탄회를 20% 완전혼합한 경우가 가장 좋은 것으로 조사되었다. 따라서 석탄회를 이용하여 현장에서 폐석을 처리할 경우 약 20-40%의 석탄회를 처리해야 높은 효율성을 얻을 수 있을것으로 사료된다. In this study, coal combustion ash (CCA) was evaluated for its stabilization effect on acidic mine waste with column experiment. Total of six treatments were installed depending on mixing ratio between coal wastes and CCA (0, 20, 40%) and mixing method (completely mixing and layered). Artificial acidic rain (pH 5.6) was used for feeding solution with flow rate of 0.05 mL min<SUP>-1</SUP>. Result showed that higher pH of leachate was observed as more CCA was mixed. The highest pH in leachate was measured when 40% of CCA was mixed with coal waste (pH of 5.8). Also, complete mixing with CCA and coal waste was more effective to increase the pH of leachate than layered treatment. Regarding the reduction of soluble Fe amount, the highest efficiency (78%) was observed when 20% of coal ash was completely mixed with mine waste. Based on those result, optimum mixing ratio of coal ash with mine waste can be ranged 20-40% depending on environmental circumstances in the field.

      • Ether-free polymeric anion exchange materials with extremely low vanadium ion permeability and outstanding cell performance for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) application

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Ether-free poly(<I>p</I>-phenylene)-based anion exchange membrane materials with outstanding vanadium ion blocking properties are reported. The synthesized ionomers with a rigid backbone structure show small dimensional variations despite the high ion exchange capacities. Among the synthesized membranes, the QPPP-2 membrane with ion exchange capacity of 2.1 meq·g<SUP>−1</SUP> exhibits high anion (OH<SUP>−</SUP>, SO<SUB>4</SUB> <SUP>2−</SUP>, and Cl<SUP>−</SUP>) conductivity. The QPPP-2 membrane shows an extremely low diffusion coefficient (2.12 × 10<SUP>−9</SUP> cm<SUP>2</SUP> min<SUP>−1</SUP>) for VO<SUP>2+</SUP>, which is much lower than that of Nafion 115 (2.88 × 10<SUP>−6</SUP> cm<SUP>2</SUP> min<SUP>−1</SUP>), indicating the vanadium ion blocking property of QPPP-2. Moreover, the chemical and operational stabilities of the membranes are investigated <I>via</I> ex situ soaking tests in 0.1 M VO<SUB>2</SUB> <SUP>+</SUP> solution and in situ operation tests for 100 cycles, respectively. The vanadium redox flow battery single cell assembled with the QPPP-2 membrane exhibits a coulombic efficiency of 99%, voltage efficiency of 87%, and energy efficiency of 86% during 100 cycles at 80 mA cm<SUP>−2</SUP>. Hepatitis B virus replicates through 3.5kb pregenomic RNA intermediate which is regulated by core promoter. Pathogenesis of hepatitis B virus has been bilieved the result of host immune response. But recently many studies have reported that high level of viral replication caused by mutation in core promoter might result in severs hepatitis. But these studies were performed in vitro, not in vivo. So there is yet debate about which factor, viral of host factor, is more important in pathogenesis of hepatitis B virus. So we measured real viral replication level in 204 chronic hepatitis B patients by quantifying HBV DNA from sera by our novel PCR-based more sensitive method, and compared these results with ALT level measured from same sera, which indicates liver cell damage. Surprisingly there are no significant correlation between HBV DNA quantity and ALT level. Then we cloned core promoter region. In SSCP, we found that many viral mutants coexist in one patient. Base on SSCP result, we chose main viral core promoter type in each patients, which is thought to determine overall viral replication level in this patient. Main type of core promoter region of each 41 patients were directly sequenced. And with these we measured promoter activity by luciferase assay system and compared promoter activity with on another. We found tha there were some differences in promoter activity according to core promoter sequences. And we constructed replication-competent viral constructs with core promoter from 41 patients and Transfected these into HepG2 cell and measured HBV DNA by southern blot. There were also differences in HBV DNA quantity according to core promoter sequences. On these all results we investigated correlation between the effect of HBV core promoter on viral replication in vitro and HBN DNA quantity, ALT level from sera of each patients. We found there is no significant correlation among them. As a result, we concluded that in determining severity chronic hepatitis B patients, host factors of each patient is more important rather than replicative activity of virus itself.

        국내 시판 고령친화식품의 품질특성

        As the aging population of the world grows, senior-friendly foods are becoming increasingly popular. In this study, the quality characteristics of domestic commercial senior-friendly foods were investigated and compared to the standard specifications of the Food Code and KS H4897. Herein, 18 samples of domestic commercial senior-friendly foods were utilized to analyze their appearance, physical properties (hardness and viscosity), nutritional value (protein, vitamin, mineral and dietary fiber), digestion rate, and hygiene indicator bacteria. When compared to the hardness standards of the Food Code all 18 samples were found to be satisfactory; however, when compared to the nutritional standard (at least three types of nutrients must be above the minimum), only five products, HG-7, DW-1, PS-1, OH-1 and OH-2, were found to be satisfactory. In addition, when the 18 samples were compared to the Korean Industrial Standard (2020), all 18 products were found to be satisfactory for physical properties and hygiene standards; furthermore, all samples, excluding HB-2, were suitable for nutritional standards (at least one type of nutrient must be above the standard).

        부산·경남지역 사찰에서 수집된 차나무(Camellia sinensis L.)잎 형태별 분류

        본 시험은 부산·경남지역 사찰 주변에 자생하고 있는(또는 30년 이상 재배되어 온) 차나무를 중심으로 14개 지역을 선정하여 산지별로 차나무 잎을 채취, 수집하여 잎 형태별 특성을 조사하였다. 차나무 잎의 형태적 특성 중 엽장(葉長) (12.04㎝), 엽폭(葉幅)(4.90㎝), 엽면적(葉面積)(41.33㎝)은 사천 배방사지 차나무 잎이 가장 크게 나타났으며, 가장 작게 나타난 곳은 부산 전등사 차나무가 엽장(6.30㎝)과 엽폭(2.48㎝)이 작으며, 엽면적은 거제 봉곡사(14.80㎝) 차나무가 가장 작게 나타났다. 엽병장(葉柄長)은 밀양의 엄광사지(0.57㎝)와 사천 배방사지(0.57㎝) 차나무 잎이 가장 길게 나타났으며, 거치수(鋸齒數)는 사천 배방사지(30.13개) 차나무였으며, 엽맥수(葉脈數)는 하동 쌍계사(11.27개) 차나무로 가장 많게 나타났다. 생엽중(生葉重)과 건엽중(乾葉重)은 사천 배방사지 차나무가 생엽중(0.81 g), 건엽중(0.34 g)으로 가장 무거웠으며, 가장 작은 지역은 부산 전등사가 생엽중(0.25 g)이며, 건엽중은 전등사와 범어사(0.10 g)가 가장 가볍게 나타났다. 차나무 잎의 형질간 상관관계는 수량성을 나타내는 건엽중은 엽장, 엽폭, 엽면적, 생엽중과 고도의 유의성을 보였으며 0.8이상의 매우 높은 유의차를 보였다. 본 연구 결과 사천 배방사지 차나무가 엽장(葉長), 엽폭(葉幅), 엽면적(葉面積), 엽병장(葉柄長), 거치수(鋸齒數), 생엽무게, 건조무게 등은 전체적으로 가장 크고 무거웠으며, 엽맥수(葉脈數)는 하동 쌍계사 주변의 차나무가 가장 많았다. 자생하는 차나무의 다양한 유전적 변이를 이용하여 유용한 유전자원으로 이용한다면 우량 다수성 계통의 신품종 개발 가능성이 높을 것으로 판단되며, 금후 자생지역별로 생육환경이나 지리적 특성도 검토 분석 한다면 기능성 신품종 개발 보급에 기초 자료로서 활용성이 높을 것으로 판단된다. We collected the tea leaves from the vicinity of 14 Buddhist temple located in Busan and Gyeongnam area where wild tea trees and more than 30 year old tee trees were commonly found. The characteristics of the tea leaves were surveyed. Among those tee leaves from 14 areas, Baebangsaji (Goseong) tea leaves had the highest value of leaf length (12.04 ㎝), leaf width(4.90 cm), and leaf area (41.33 ㎝). The tea leaves of Jeondeungsa (Busan) had the lowest value of leaf length (6.30 ㎝) and leaf width (2.48 ㎝). The tea leaves of Bonggoksa (Geoje) had the lowest value of leaf area (14.80 ㎝). The longest leaf stalk length was Umgwangsaji (Miryang) tea leaves (0.57 ㎝) and Baedangsaji (Goseong) tea leaf (0.57 ㎝). The largest No. of serrate was Baedangsaji (Goseong) tea leaves (30.13) and for leaf vein was Ssanggyesa (Hadong) as a number of 11.27. The heaviest weight of fresh leaf was Baedangsaji (Goseong) tea leaf (0.81 g) and, also, the dry tea leaf of Baedangsaji (Goseong) was the heaviest (0.34 g). The lightest weight of fresh leaf was Jeondeungsa (Busan) tea leaves (0.25 g) and the lightest weight of dry leaf was Jeondeungsa. In this study, leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, leaf stalk length, No. of serrate, weight of fresh leaf and weight of dry leaf value of the leaves collected from Baedangsaji (Goseong) was generally high and The highest value of No. of leaf vein was from Ssanggyesa (Hadong).

        Recovery and recycling of Zr(OH)<sub>4</sub> with a ZrCl<sub>4</sub> coagulant from waste of the zirconium pentahydroxide [Zr(OH)<sub>5</sub> <sup>−</sup>] displacement technique

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Ion exchange technology is the most effective and economical to remove heat stable salts (HSS) in CO<SUB>2</SUB> absorption processes. However, the disadvantage of high waste generation remains an unsolved problem. This study attempted to reduce the amount of waste generated during the Zr(OH)<SUB>5</SUB> <SUP>−</SUP> regeneration process through resource recovery by using ZrCl<SUB>4</SUB> coagulant, then recycling the recovered Zr(OH)<SUB>4</SUB> precipitate to produce Zr(OH)<SUB>5</SUB> <SUP>−</SUP> regenerant. The experimental results showed a waste coagulant efficiency of about 75%. The coagulation mechanism was suggested based on the conductivity and zeta potential analysis. The recovered Zr(OH)<SUB>4</SUB> had no differences in terms of chemical composition and regeneration efficiency, when compared with virgin material. These results indicate that the recovery and recycling of Zr(OH)<SUB>4</SUB> from the waste stream using ZrCl<SUB>4</SUB> as a coagulant reduced a large amount of the waste generated from the ion exchange process.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Reduction efficiency using ZrCl<SUB>4</SUB> coagulant from ion exchange waste is about 75.0%. </LI> <LI> Coagulation mechanism of four stages with respect to the coagulant dose is proposed. </LI> <LI> Recovery efficiency of hydroxide, as Zr(OH)<SUB>4</SUB>, from the waste is about 99.2%. </LI> <LI> The recovered Zr(OH)<SUB>4</SUB> has no difference in regeneration efficiency of virgin material. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Regeneration of heat stable salts-loaded anion exchange resin by a novel zirconium pentahydroxide [Zr(OH)<sub>5</sub> <sup>−</sup>] displacement technique in CO<sub>2</sub> absorption process

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In the CO<SUB>2</SUB> absorption process, heat stable salts (HSS) have been reported to be a major cause of operational problems, such as excessive foaming, corrosion, amine loss, and capacity reduction. Ion exchange technology has been the most effective and economical way for the removal of HSS. However, the disadvantage of this technology is its low regeneration efficiency. This study attempted to improve the low regeneration efficiency of anion exchange resin loaded with HSS by using a novel zirconium pentahydroxide (ZrOH<SUB>5</SUB> <SUP>−</SUP>) displacement technique. The experimental results showed, in the batch system, that the most effective potential metal-hydroxide regenerant, Zr(OH)<SUB>5</SUB> <SUP>−</SUP>, exhibited an efficiency that is 15.2% higher than for conventional NaOH, and in the continuous system, Zr(OH)<SUB>5</SUB> <SUP>−</SUP> had an efficiency that is 28.0–17.8% higher for 1.5–5bed volume (BV). The differences of the BV corresponded to the breakthrough point for the initial breakthrough and after the 1st and 2nd regenerations were only 1.5–3.9%, which means that there was no significant deterioration of the resin’s performance by Zr(OH)<SUB>5</SUB> <SUP>−</SUP> regeneration. The mechanism of the general ion exchange steps as well as the regeneration by Zr(OH)<SUB>5</SUB> <SUP>−</SUP> was determined by performing an FT-IR analysis. These results indicate that the novel Zr(OH)<SUB>5</SUB> <SUP>−</SUP> displacement technique improves the low regeneration efficiency of the ion exchange process.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The Zr(OH)<SUB>5</SUB> <SUP>−</SUP> is the most effective regenerant of the candidates that were tested. </LI> <LI> The Zr(OH)<SUB>5</SUB> <SUP>−</SUP> exhibits higher regeneration efficiency than for conventional NaOH. </LI> <LI> There is no significant deterioration of the resin’s performance by Zr(OH)<SUB>5</SUB> <SUP>−</SUP>. </LI> <LI> The regeneration mechanism for water structure enforced-ion pairing is proposed. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        만성 콩팥병 환자에서 추정 사구체 여과율에 따른 25-Hydroxyvitamin D의 특성

        Background/Aims: Accumulating data suggest that vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, comprehensive data are lacking for Koreans. The aim of this study was to survey vitamin D deficiency among patients with CKD in Korea and to identify the relationships among various factors. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 444 patients who were divided into four subgroups by estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) for comparisons of mean 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] level and other parameters. In addition, non-dialyzed patients were categorized into four groups based on 25(OH)D levels (<10, 10-19, 20-29, and ≥ 30 ng/mL), and risk factors for severe vitamin D deficiency (<10 ng/mL) were investigated. Results: Of patients with an eGFR ≥ 60 mL/min/1.73 m2, 43% (34/79) showed severe 25(OH)D deficiency, and the mean 25(OH)D level was 11.7±5.3 ng/mL. In CKD3 group, 53.2% (41/77) showed severe 25(OH)D deficiency, with a mean level of 11.3±7.2 ng/mL. In CKD4 group, 53.3% (49/92) had severe 25(OH)D deficiency, with a mean level of 11.0±6.2 ng/mL. Approximately 71% (139/196) of patients in CKD5 group showed severe deficiency, and the mean level was 9.2±5.9 ng/mL. Severe 25(OH)D deficiency was affected by winter season, renal function, diabetes, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. The serum parathyroid hormone level was inversely correlated with the 25(OH)D level, such that 25(OH)D < 20 ng/mL were associated with a steep increase in parathyroid hormone. Conclusions: Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent in the Korean population. Few patients met a sufficient 25(OH)D concentration, even in the early stages of CKD. Our data suggest that 25(OH)D level of 20 ng/mL is a threshold for a rapid increase in parathyroid hormone levels. (Korean J Med 2012;83:740-751)
