        In this study, we discuss on the seasonal fluctuations of water quality and chlorophyll-a in the eastern coastal area of Sinji Island. Sinji Island is located in the eastern part of Wando Island, and the productive farm ground is spread around the Island. Some analytical parameters were analyzed to study the seasonal water quality from Feb. ruary, 4, 1994 to October. 1, 1994 around the Island. The results are as follows: 1) Ranges of pH and suspended solid(SS) were 8.05~8.39 and 0.50~58.08㎎/l, respectively. The highest mean value of SS was 22.47㎎/l in bottom layer at winter season, the lowest mean value was 4.27㎎/l in surface layer at summer season. 2) Dissolved oxygen(DO) concentrations were slightly under saturation in the almost area at fall season, and in some area at summer season. 3) Chemical oxygen demand(COD) concentrations showed the highest mean value of 2.00㎎/l in bottom layer of fall season in the range of 0.66~5.28㎎/l, while showed the lowest mean value of 1.19㎎/l in bottom layer of spring in the range of 0.12~6.80㎎/l. 4) Dissolved inorganic nitrogen(DIN) concentrations showed the highest mean value of 7.17㎍-at./l in both layer at winter season, while showed the lowest mean value of 1.33㎍-at./l in surface layer of summer season. 5) Dissolved inorganic phosphorus(DIP) concentrations were higher at winter season than the other season. And, the the highest mean value of 0.56㎍-at./l was in surface layer at winter season. 6) N/P ratios were lower than 16 of Redfield ratio in both layer at all season except fall. It means that nitrogen is more limiting nutrient than phosphorus in the growth of phytoplankton. 7) Chlorophyll-a concentrations showed the highest mean value of 4.35㎎/㎥ in surface layer at spring season.

        This study was performed to characterize the water quality of Doam bay from March 8 to August 16,1997. Doam bay is located in the western part of south coast in Korea. The results are as follows: The northern part of surveyed area was highly effected from the freshwater of Tamjin river by the results of salinity and pH. Dissolved oxygen(DO) concentrations were slightly under saturated in the bottom layer at August, but more saturated at spring season. Ranges of suspended solid(SS) concentrations were 6.57~67.50mg/l, and showed the showed the highest mean values in bottom layer at June. Chemical oxygen demand(COD) concentrations showed the highest mean value of 1.98mg/l in surface layer of June. Dissolved incorganic nitrogen(DIN) concentrations showed the highest mean value of 2.97㎍-at/l in surface layer at May, while showed the lowest mean value of 0.92㎍-at/l in bottom layer of June. Dissolved inorganic phosphorus(DIP) concentrations was in the range of 0.06~3.18㎍-at/l. The highest mean value of 1.90㎍-at/l was in bottom layer of June. And, higher concentrations were showed in the northern inner area. Nitrogen is more limiting constituednt than phosphorous in the growth of phytoplankton in almost all area at all surveyed season by the results of lower N/P ratio than 16 of Redfield ratio. Eutrophication indices were slightly high in the northern inner area at May and June. But, they were lower in the other almost surveyed area.

        광양만과 여수해만의 표층퇴적물에서 Nonylphenol의 오염에 관한 연구

        This study was carried out to survey the pollution of nonvlphenol (NP) in surface sediments around Gwangyang bay and Yeosu sound. NP was suspected chemicals as endocrine disruption. Gwangyang bay is located on the mid south coast of Korea. It is a semi-closed bay which Yeosu petrochemical industrial complex, POSCO (Pohang Steel Company) and Gwangyang container harbor are there. The surface sediments were collected at 15 stations with gravity corer at October, 1999, February, May and August, 2000. Also, the stream and intertidal sediment were collected at 5 sites at August, 2000. Concentrations of NP in surface sediments were in the range of 6.89 to 202.70 ng/g dry wt.. Seasonal range (mean value) of NP is 13.98 to 30.48 (23.46) ng/g dry wt. at October, 10.35 to 54.91 (28.10) ng/g dry wt. at February, 29.05 to 202.70 (82.32) ng/g dry wt. at May and 6.98 to 83.40 (25.37) ng/g dry wt. at August. NP was seasonally fluctuated, and the highest mean value and range was detected at May, 2000. NP was highly distributed in the inner part of Gwangyang bay than Yeosu sound. Concentrations of NP in stream and intertidal sediments showed the highest value in downstream near Yeosu petrochemical industrial complex and Yondung stream. It suggests that the source of NP is industrial wastewater and municipal sewage.

        We estimated the self purification capacity of tidal flats in KanJin Bay, southwestern coast of Korea during flood tide and ebb tide in September, December, 1997 and March, 1998. The net flux of 17.8 gDIN/m²/yr with tidal current outflow to sea was estimated in September and 16.0 gDIN/m2/yr outflow to sea in December, while 0.57 gDIN/m²/yr influx into the tidal flat in March. The flux of 1.29 gDIP/m²/yr outflow to sea was estimated in September, while 2.64 gDIP/m2/yr and 5.90 gDIP/m²/yr influx into the tidal flat in December and in March, respectively. The SS flux of 0.849 kgSS/m²/yr and 5.28 kgSS/m²/yr outflow to sea were estimated in September and in March, while 12.0 kgSS/m²/yr inflow into the tidal flat in December. The net flux of 339 gCOD/m²/yr was inflow into the tidal flat was estimated in September, 254 gCOD/m²/yr in December and 63.7 gCOD/m²/yr in March, respectively. The capacity of COD purification of the tidal flats was 219 gCOD/m²/yr for a period of the diurnal tide.

      • 광양만의 저질 중금속 농도 분포 특성

        The main goals of the study were to investigate the sediment quality and trace metal distribution in sediment of Kwangyang Bay, south coastal of Korea. Surface sediment sampling were performed in November, 2000 and February and March, 2001. The concentration of H₂S, IL and COD in sediment were measured by a manual of the Department of Marine Environment of Korea. The extracted trace metals Fe, Cu, Cd, Pb, and Zn in sediments mean analyzed by the flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer with an instrument of model Shimadzu AA-6701F. H₂S, IL and COD in the surface sediment were 1.3 mg/g, 5.9 % and 15.0 mg/g, respectively. The mean content of Fe, Cu, Cd, Pb and Zn were 1523 mg/kg, 4.799 mg/kg, 1.321 mg/kg 9.285 mg/kg and 9.353 mg/kg, respectively. All of these measured trace metals level were over the other reported trace metal level in sediment of coastal area. According to histograms, the content of H₂S, IL and COD and trace metals in sediment of this study were affected by artificial activities rather than natural process.

        Rainfall Runoff characteristics and Risk Assessment of Agro-chemicals Used in Golf Links

        A rainfall runoff model described in this paper which is based on Basin- wide Ecological Model(BAWEM) calculates the fate of agro-chemicals in a watershed located of golf links. The rainfall runoff coefficients of agro-chemicals,which are the dominant parameters to predict the movement of agro-chemicals from soil and turfgrass to downstream water, are estimated. Also, the model is used to estimate the level of health risks the residents around golf links are exposed to. The fidelity of rainfall runoff model of agro-chemicals was validated by the observed data obtained during rainy period. The calculated results from this model were found to be in the same order of that of the observed. The rainfall runoff coefficients of four agro-chemicals used in golf links were 5.4×10 exp (-3), 1.9×10 exp (-3), 3.0×10 exp (-4) and 4.4×10 exp (-3) for flutolanil, isoprothiolane, chlorpyrifos and simazine, respectively. The health risk level to the residents around golf links is evaluated to be rather low: the ratio of estimated dose through drinking water to the 10% of ADI(Acceptable Daily Intake) value or VSD for 10^-6 life time risk varied in the range of 0.005∼0.04 and 0.003∼0.11, respectively, for both the annual mean and maximum monthly mean cases.

        A New Synthetic Route for Silacyclopropanes: Reactions of a Bromosilylenoid with Olefins

        <P>Stable 1-bromo-1-silacyclopropanes were synthesized in high yields from the reaction of the stable bromotrisylsilylenoid <B>1</B> (trisyl = C(SiMe<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>3</SUB>) with olefins such as styrene, trimethylvinylsilane, triethylvinylsilane, and dimethylphenylvinylsilane, a new synthetic route for silacyclopropanes. The structure of bromosilacyclopropane <B>5</B> was confirmed by X-ray analysis. In the presence of excess MeOH the phenyl-substituted bromosilacyclopropane <B>2</B> underwent regioselective ring opening to give the corresponding product <B>6</B>. In contrast, the reaction of silyl-substituted bromosilacyclopropane <B>5</B> with MeOH gave only the product of nucleophilic substitution at the silicon atom, 1-methoxy-1-silacyclopropane <B>7</B>, without any ring opening.       • 광양만 해역 퇴적물중 PAHs 오염 특성

        PAHs(Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) are widespread contaminants in the marine environment. They are of mainly anthropogenic origin from urban runoff, oil spill and combustion of fossil fuels. Some PAHs are potentially carcinogenic and mutagenic to aquatic organism. The surface sediments core sediments were collected at 12 stations with gravity corer from May, 1998 to July, 1999. PAHs were detected at all of the surface and core sediments. Total PAHs concentrations in the surface sediments ranged from 171.40 to 1013.54㎍/㎏ dry wt.. Almost of the surface sediments, naphthalene was the highest in the range of 14.08 to 691.39㎍/㎏ dry wt. and anthracene was the lowest in the range of 0.49 to 22.66㎍/㎏ dry wt. Total PAHs concentrations in the core sediments ranged from 275.04 to 2838.62㎍/㎏ dry wt.. Naphthalene was the highest concentration in the range of 40.60 to 2294.06㎍/㎏ dry wt. and anthracene was the lowest concentration(2.63-11.30㎍/㎏ dry wt.). Most of the PAHs profiles in the outer site of Gwangyang bay showed lower concentrations and fluctuations than the inner bay. The correlation coefficients between individual PAHs and Total PAHs in the surface and core sediments were relatively higher in the low molecular compounds such as naphthalene, acenaphthylene and phenanthrene. In the relationship of the P/A(Phenanthrene/Anthracene) ratio and F/P(Fluoranthene/Pyrene) ratio, P/A ratio was generally above 10 and F/P ratio was displayed to above 1 in all sediment samples. These data indicate that PAHs in sediments around Kwangyang bay seem to be of both pyrolytic and petrogenic origin.
