Adhesion molecules and proteinases play an important role in the invasion and metastasis of a malignant tumor. However, there have not been many studies on tongue squamous cell carcinoma at Saint Mary's Hospital and Kangnam Saint Mary's Hospital, the Catholic University of Korea, between 1994 and 2000, and had not received chemo-or radiotherapy. The expression of the adhesion molecules CD44H, proteinases MMP-2 and MMP-9, and TIMP-1, which controls MMP activity, was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. In addition their association with the tumor size, lymph node metastasis, clinical stage, and cell differentiation was evaluated. Increased MMP-2 expression was significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis and clinical stage. However, it did not correlate with tumor size or cell differentiation. CD44H, MMP-9 and TIMP-1 expression were not significantly related to tumor size, lymph node metastasis, clincial stage and cell differentiation. The results suggest that MMP-2 is a possible immunohistochemical prognostic factor in tongue squamous cell carcinoma. Futher reasearches will be needed to investigate the additional tumor prognostic factors and their mechanisms.

An eleven year old castrated male Maltese was presented to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University. In physical examination, approximately 0.5 cm round mass was observed on tail base. This small elevated mass has also shown alopecic and firm configuration. It was differentially diagnosed as sebaceous adenoma and hyperplasia by fine needle aspiration. After surgical removal, the sample was diagnosed as sebaceous hyperplasia by histopathological examination. It has not yet shown any signs of recurrence and prognosis has teen good.

Abstract

We cloned a plant gene, Ntcyc07, conferring arsenite tolerance by expressing a tobacco expression library in WT yeast (Y800). Expression of Ntcyc07 increased the tolerance to As(III) and decreased its accumulation, suggesting that the enhanced As(III) tolerance resulted from a reduction of the intracellular arsenic level. Interestingly, expression of Ntcyc07 increased the expression of the As(III) export carrier ACR3, but repressed that of As(III) uptake channel FPS1. Ntcyc07p interacted with Acr1p, which is the transcriptional activator of ACR3, but not with the ACR3 promoter. Taken together, the data indicated that Ntcyc07p promoted As(III) tolerance by decreasing the intracellular level of As(III) via increasing the expression of ACR3 and reducing that of FPS1.

Summary

Background

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a heterogeneous disease that is characterized by varying degrees of involvement of airway and lung parenchyma. Although cigarette smoke is the major risk factor for COPD, the principal determining factors of involvement of the airway or lung parenchyma have not been clearly defined. Genetic variability in COPD patients might influence the varying degrees of involvement of airway and parenchyma. We therefore studied whether airway and parenchyma involvement might be associated with the ADRB2 genotype, which has been reported to be associated with COPD susceptibility and the bronchodilator response.

Methods

One hundred and eleven COPD subjects, whose post-bronchodilator FEV1/FVC values were less than 0.7, and who had histories of smoking exceeding 10 pack-years, were prospectively recruited from pulmonology clinics of 11 hospitals in Seoul, Korea. The degrees of involvement of airway and parenchyma were evaluated by volumetric computed tomography (CT) scans. Background/Aims: The red-blood-cell distribution width (RDW) is a newly recognized risk marker in patients with cardiovascular disease, but its role in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has not been well defined. The aim of the present study was to determine the association between RDW values and the level of fibrosis in NAFLD according to BARD and FIB-4 scores. Methods: This study included 24,547 subjects who had been diagnosed with NAFLD based on abdominal ultrasonography and questionnaires about alcohol consumption. The degree of liver fibrosis was determined according to BARD and FIB-4 scores. The association between RDW values and the degree of fibrosis in NAFLD was analyzed retrospectively. Results: After adjusting for age, hemoglobin level, mean corpuscular volume, history of hypertension, history of diabetes, and high-sensitivity (-reactive protein, the RDW values were 12.61±0.41% (mean±SD), 12.70±0.70%, 12.77±0.62%, 12.87±0.82%, and 13.25±0.90% for those with BARD scores of 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively, and 12.71±0.72%, 12.79±0.66%, and 13.23±1.52% for those with FIB-4 scores of <1.30, 1.31-2.66, and ~2.67, respectively (P<0.05). The prevalence of advanced fibrosis (BARD score of 24 and FIB-4 score of ~1.3) increased with the RDW [BARD score: 51.1% in quartile 1 (Q1) vs. 63.6% in Q4; FIB-4 score: 6.9% in Q1 vs. 10.5% in Q4; P<O.OOl]. After adjustments, the odds ratio of having advanced fibrosis for those in Q4 compared to Q1 were 1.76 (95%(1=1.55-2.00, P<O.OOl) relative to BARD score and 1.69 (95%(1=1.52-1.98, P<O.OOl) relative to FIB-4 score. Conclusions: Elevated RDW is independently associated with advanced fibrosis in NAFLD. (Clin Mol Hepatol 2013;19:258-265)

Background: The purpose of this study was to document outcomes following withdrawal of a single inhaler (step-down) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients on triple therapy (long-acting muscarinic antagonist and a combination of long-acting ${\beta}2$-agonists and inhaled corticosteroid), which a common treatment strategy in clinical practice. Methods: Through a retrospective observational study, COPD patients receiving triple therapy over 2 years (triple group; n=109) were compared with those who had undergone triple therapy for at least 1 year and subsequently, over 9 months, initiated inhaler withdrawal (step-down group, n=39). The index time was defined as the time of withdrawal in the step-down group and as 1 year after the start of triple therapy in the triple group. Results: Lung function at the index time was superior and the previous exacerbation frequency was lower in the step-down group than in the triple group. Step-down resulted in aggravating disease symptoms, a reduced overall quality of life, decreasing exercise performance, and accelerated forced expiratory volume in 1 second ($FEV_1$) decline ($54.7{\pm}15.7mL/yr$ vs. $10.7{\pm}7.1mL/yr$, p=0.007), but there was no observed increase in the frequency of exacerbations. Conclusion: Withdrawal of a single inhaler during triple therapy in COPD patients should be conducted with caution as it may impair the exercise capacity and quality of life while accelerating $FEV_1$ decline.

Although many existing hybrid energy storage systems demonstrate promising electrochemical performances, imbalances between the energies and kinetics of the two electrodes must be resolved to allow their widespread commercialization. As such, the development of a new class of energy storage systems is a particular challenge, since future systems will require a single device to provide both a high gravimetric energy and a high power density. In this context, we herein report the design of novel lithium-sulfur capacitors. The resulting asymmetric systems exhibited energy densities of 23.9-236.4 Wh kg(-1) and power densities of 72.2-4097.3 W kg(-1), which are the highest reported values for an asymmetric system to date. This approach involved the use of a prelithiated anode and a hybrid cathode material exhibiting anion adsorption-desorption in addition to the electrochemical reduction and oxidation of sulfur at almost identical rates. This novel strategy yielded both high energy and power densities, and therefore establishes a new benchmark for hybrid systems.

Abstract

Porous graphitic activated carbon made from biodegradable starch-based packing peanuts contain metallic impurities, such as sodium and potassium impurities. The metallic impurities are not only eliminated in the activation process and revelation. These carbon sheets appear to form an ultrathin graphitic layer on the surface of the disordered carbon framework of the packed peanut-derived activated carbon. The shell-like graphitic structure can be explained by potassium penetration into the carbon structure during chemical activation and subsequent catalytic graphitization by the metallic impurities. These graphitic structures produce high-power density properties. As sodium impurities are present in the depth of the PP-C, it is possible to synergize the effects of potassium. The combination of these structural properties enables the carbon sheets to provide a harmonious electrochemical environment for the full realization of fast ion transport and high capacitance.

Highlights

The shell-like graphitic structure was derived from biodegradable starch-based packing peanuts.

These carbon sheets seem to form an ultrathin graphitic layer on the surface of the disordered carbon framework.

The shell-like graphitic structure is capable of creating a structure that combines the high surface area of micro/mesopores.

The shell-like graphitic structure exhibited excellent electrochemical performance.

These results should encourage the establishment of a new economic platform for advanced porous graphitic carbon.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]
