Incidental Lexical Learning from Single-player Video Game

        Hiu Yuet Sze-to,Jookyoung Jung 한국영어평가학회 2022 영어평가 Vol.17 No.1

Under the recent pandemic triggered by Covid-19, technology-mediated learning platforms have received increasing attention, and digital video games are one of such prevailing trends. However, most studies in this field have focused on multiplayer online games with particular attention to the interaction between game players. Against this context, this paper reports a case study that explored how single-player video games can affect second language users' incidental lexical learning from playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (BOTW). Eight Cantonese undergraduate students were randomly assigned to either the experimental or the control group and their vocabulary knowledge was assessed using the Vocabulary Knowledge Scale (VKS) tests. Four students in the experimental group played the game for four hours, while those assigned to the control group only took the VKSs without playing the game. The results indicated that the students showed improvement in their receptive knowledge about the target words, while word frequency and context in the game did not have an impact on incidental lexical learning. The findings are explained with Hulstijn and Laufer's (2001) Involvement Load Hypothesis and Skehan's Trade-off Hypothesis, and pedagogical suggestions are provided in terms of how to utilize games in promoting incidental lexical learning.

Examining the Use of Geotags on Instagram: Motivation, Satisfaction, and Location-based Information Sharing in Hong Kong

Hiu Feng Chan,조희정,이혜은 한국인터넷방송통신학회 2022 International Journal of Internet, Broadcasting an Vol.14 No.1

The advent of location-based social networks (LBSNs), and the pervasive use of smartphones have allowed individuals to easily inform their status through locational information. This led to a new trend in social media: to upload geotagged photos that illustrate the location of the images and then share them with others. In this circumstance, the current study aims to examine the use of geotags on Instagram. Further, the motivations for using geotags as well as the relationship among the motivation, satisfaction, and location information sharing behavior are analyzed. The online survey was conducted on 411 respondents of Hong Kong who are active Instagram users. Based on uses and gratification theory and goal theory, the users’ motivations and goals for utilizing geotags were divided into mainly two categories; task-involved and self-involved goals. Then, four different motivations (contribution, memory aid, showing off, and reputation gaining) were further examined. The result indicated that contribution, memory aid, and reputation gaining were the goals and motivation for the users to utilize geotags on Instagram, having a positive impact on satisfaction. However, a positive relationship between showing off and geotag satisfaction was not supported. Among four different factors, memory aid was found to have the strongest influence on geotagging satisfaction. The result of testing the relationship between geotag satisfaction and further location information sharing behavior also turned out to have a positive relationship. The implications and limitations of findings are also discussed in the study.

      • Application of Chinese version of SWAL-QOL in Parkinson’s Disease

Hiu Fung Chan,Hyang Hee Kim,Deog Young Kim,Manwa Lawrence Ng 한국언어치료학회 2016 한국언어치료학회 학술발표대회 논문집 Vol.2016 No.12

Purpose: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disease in the world.. Along its course of development, ninety percent of PD patients develop dysphagia. This study aims to (1) evaluate swallowing-related quality of life (SR-QOL) in PD by using the Chinese version of the Swallow Quality-of-Life Questionnaire (CSWAL-QOL); and to (2) delineate potential relationships between the 10 subscales in CSWAL-QOL and the score in the 14-items Dysphagia-Symptom Battery (DSB), in order to evaluate if the severity of dysphagia symptoms is associated with each subscale scores. Methods: A total of 52 subjects were recruited to the study. Two validated surveys, CSWAL-QOL and the Chinese version of 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-C), were used to evaluate SR-QOL and depression respectively. A series of Spearman’s Rho correlation analyses were performed to examine the relationship between the 10-subscale scores in CSWAL-QOL and (1) disease duration, (2) depression and (3) the 14-item DSB. Correlations were regarded as weak if |r|<0.3, moderate if 0.3≤|r|<0.5, strong if 0.5≤|r|<0.7, and very strong if |r|≥0.7 Results: A significant correlation was found between depression and CSWAL-QOL scores. Yet, disease duration fail to correlate with any other subscales significantly. There were a strong correlation between the 14-item DSB and 7 subscales in CSWAL-QOL, including burden, food selection, fear, mental health, social functioning, communication, fatigue subscales. Fear scale was the most strongly positively correlated with DSB. DSB also presents a strong positive correlation with the composite score, which is the average of the 10 subscale scores. Conclusions: The current findings highlighted the psychosocial sequelae of dysphagia in PD patients and suggested a possible relationship between depression and swallowing.

Adding insult to injury: Sexual harassment in Hong Kong churches

        Hiu-Tung Jessica Tso 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2018 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.24 No.3

This paper aims to review sexual harassment cases that have occurred in the churches of Hong Kong. To this day, such incidents have been brushed aside or ignored. In 2011, a Christian woman, referred to as Ms. K in this paper, wrote about her experience and accused her supervisor of rape. However, her pastor did not think that the said supervisor had committed a crime and merely offered to pray with the victim. This response touched off an uproar within the churches. This is one of the many stories that have been emerging from the churches that are characterized by authoritarian, patriarchal leadership and cultures that routinely silence the voices of women. A gender justice group in the Hong Kong Christian Council (HKCC) is trying to respond to the current situation using different approaches, including setting up a policy for churches, conducting a church gender awareness survey, collecting accounts from victims, and providing gender justice education. By reviewing the current situation and strategies, this paper shares the lessons we have learned and how we should seek to heal the victims of such crimes.

Hong Kong EFL Learners' Politeness Strategy Use in Production and Perception of Requests and Refusals

        Hiu Wai Chan,정주경 한국영어평가학회 2021 영어평가 Vol.16 No.2

Requests and refusals are well-acknowledged as challenging speech acts even when realized in native interactions owing to their intrinsic nature of being facethreatening. It is therefore conceivable that producing such social responses would be an arduous task for foreign language learners. Against this background, the present study set out with an aim to examine the politeness in the production of and perception of requests and refusals by six secondary-level EFL learners in Hong Kong under different degrees of social distance and social status, with prospective English teachers and native speakers as the control group. A discourse-completion task and a survey served as the instruments to elicit quantitative data. Results were analyzed with reference to Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory, which proposes four types of politeness strategies, namely bald on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness and off-record strategy. Findings suggested that intermediate learners had an overuse of direct strategy to threaten both positive and negative face of interlocutors, while advanced learners were reported to be too conventionally indirect in general. Plausible explanation was the insufficient coverage of certain topics at schools. The paper hence demands educational adjustment in relevant aspects to improve learners’ pragmatic performance.

Numerical simulation of the influence of over fire air position on the combustion in a single furnace boiler with dual circle firing

        Hiu Liu,Nana Xin,Qingxi Cao,Long Sha,Dezhi Sun,Shaohua Wu 한국화학공학회 2009 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.26 No.4

The Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code PHOENICS is applied to simulate and evaluate the combustion process within the furnace of a 1,000MW dual circle tangential firing single furnace lignite-fired ultra supercritical (USC) boiler. The dependence on overfire air (OFA) positioning on the combustion process is studied. The results show that the highest temperature appears on the upside of the burner zone close to the front wall, and the high temperature zone rises with elevated OFA positions. However, the temperature field distributions are similar despite differing OFA positions. The char content near the rear wall is higher than that near the front wall, and below the furnace arch, coal particles concentrate towards the front wall. Also with elevated OFA positions, nitrogen oxide (NOx) concentrations at the outlet fall, but char content increases. In regard to NOx emission and char burnout, the suggested optimal distance from the OFA center to the center of the uppermost primary air nozzle should be 6 meters.

        '우디허'(Udihe)名稱考

        이희우 서울대학교 어학연구소 1985 語學硏究 Vol.21 No.1

The present study discusses the name of the Udihe tribe, which is a branch of Tungus. I examined the various hypotheses of the historical origin of 'Udihe.' And I investigated the complex problems about the name of 'Udihe' on the basis of historical and ethnographical materials about the tribe. My attempt to treat the name 'Udige' and 'Weji' on the one hand and 'Udige' and 'Udihe' on th other under the same origin can be regarded as a contribution to the future study of the historical and ethnographical status of 'Udihe.'
