        The March 2017 earthquake sequence along the E-Wtrending Mcid Aïcha-Debbagh Fault, northeast Algeria

        In Northeast Algeria, a sequence of 143 small earthquakes (Md ≤ 4.7) occurred near the Mcid Aïcha-Debbagh (MAD) Fault between 4 and 16 March, 2017. During this sequence, 74% of the seismic activity occurred in the first two days. Although the earthquakes were not large, they yielded important new information and have improved our understanding of seismic activity in three distinct regions along the fault. In the Sidi Dris region (western MAD Fault), 106 events (1 ≤ Md ≤ 3.2) were located in an aftershock cluster trending NNE-SSW, highlighting a transverse fault with ~6 km of strike-slip displacement that locally cuts the MAD Fault. In the El Kantour region (central MAD Fault), 31 events were recorded along a 3 km long fault segment, including the Mw 4.7 mainshock. The mainshock had a focal mechanism consistent with predominantly strike-slip motion on a N110°E-striking fault plane, in agreement with the WNW-ESE orientation of the central MAD Fault segment. Finally, six diffuse events occurred in the Hammam Debbagh region (eastern MAD Fault). A significant event (Md 3.0) in this region had a focal mechanism consistent with strike-slip movement and a normal component trending NW-SE. This is consistent with the fault plane orientations of key events in the time period 2003–2014, likely related to the NW-SE-striking Hammam Debbagh Fault. The present-day stress tensor is characterized by a strike-slip tectonic regime and a σ1 orientation (N342°E) that closely matches the maximum regional compressive stress orientation (NNW-SSE).

      • Governance in World Taekwondo Federation (WTF): Evaluation of the WTF Governance System Before and After 2004

        Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the governance system of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) before and after 2004, to illustrate the impact of that governance system on Taekwondo as an Olympic Sport, and to examine the similarities and differences in the two WTF governance systems. Methods: We investigated the achievements of both governing bodies during the last 42 years. A questionnaire based on Basic Indicators for Better Governance in International Sports (BIBGIS), interviews, and organizational documents were analyzed to compare the two WTF governance systems and analyze their impact on Taekwondo as an Olympic sport. Results: The results of good governance in the WTF before 2004 showed that all the dimensions were under the medium score except for solidarity and organization transparency. The highest score was for solidarity with 21 out of 36. The mean value was 2.33 out of 4 and the percentage was 58.33%. The lowest score was for the stakeholder’s representation with only a score of 8 out of 36. The mean value was 0.88 out of 4 and the percentage was 22.22%. The results of good governance in the WTF after 2004 showed all the dimensions were over the medium score except for transparency. The highest scores were for organization transparency and solidarity with 27.5 and 27 out of 36, respectively. The mean values were 3.05 and 3, respectively. The percentages were 76.38% and 75%, respectively. The lowest score was for the stakeholder’s representation, which was only 15 out of 36. The mean value was 1.66 and the percentage was 41.66%. Conclusions : The results of the present study indicate that the WTF before 2004 played a considerable role in spreading Taekwondo worldwide. It also played the major role in making Taekwondo an Olympic sport. Meanwhile, it indicated that the WTF gave priority to certain dimensions like solidarity and disdain in others. The results of the present study also illustrates that the WTF after 2004 succeeded in the betterment of most dimensions of governance. Almost every score doubled in the seven dimensions, the exceptions being solidarity and organization transparency where the increased scores were not as high. This was because the solidarity dimension has already high before 2004. We conclude that despite the betterment in the WTF’s good governance, some dimensions can still be improved.

      • New Approach of Incremental Conductance Algorithm for Maximum Power Point Tracking Based on Fuzzy Logic

        Tracking the maximum power point is an appropriate solution against climatic changes like the irradiance and temperature. The classic incremental conductance algorithm is one of the most widely used methods in commercial photovoltaic MPPT’s (Maximum Power Point Tracking). A wide variation of climatic condition can degrade the produced energy. In this work we present our new approach based on fuzzy logic which can guarantee better performance. The studied system used to prove the efficiency of the proposed method is composed by a photovoltaic panel Kaneka K60 connected to a Sepic Converter which fed a resistive load. The All results quoted in this work are found using MATLAB-Simulink. We put the system in different working condition to highlight our new approach. All presented results are discussed.

        An Overview of Unsupervised and Semi-Supervised Fuzzy Kernel Clustering

        For real-world clustering tasks, the input data is typically not easily separable due to the highly complex data structure or when clusters vary in size, density and shape. Kernel-based clustering has proven to be an effective approach to partition such data. In this paper, we provide an overview of several fuzzy kernel clustering algorithms. We focus on methods that optimize an fuzzy C-mean-type objective function. We highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each method. In addition to the completely unsupervised algorithms, we also provide an overview of some semi-supervised fuzzy kernel clustering algorithms. These algorithms use partial supervision information to guide the optimization process and avoid local minima. We also provide an overview of the different approaches that have been used to extend kernel clustering to handle very large data sets.

        Protective Effect of Lavandula stoechas and Rosmarinus officinalis Essential Oils Against Reproductive Damage and Oxidative Stress in Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Rats

        The authors aimed in the present study to assess the protective effect of Rosmarinus officinalis essential oils (ROEO) and Lavandula stoechas essential oils (LSEO) against reproductive damage and oxidative stress in alloxan-induced diabetic male rats. Essential oil samples were obtained from the aerial parts of the plants by hydrodistillation and analyzed by the gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Rats were divided into four groups: healthy control (HC); diabetic control (DC); healthy +ROEO (H + ROEO), healthy + LSEO (H + LSEO), diabetic +ROEO (D + ROEO), and diabetic + LSEO (D + LSEO). The use of GC-MS allowed to the identification of 15 and 22 compounds in ROEO and LSEO, respectively. In addition, the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) test showed that ROEO and LSEO had an important antioxidant capacity. In vivo, we initially found that ROEO and LSEO treatment protected against the decrease in alloxan-induced body weight gain, relative reproductive organ weights, testosterone level, as well as sperm quality decline. On the other hand, we showed that alloxan administration was accompanied by an oxidative stress status assessed by an increase of malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) levels, as well as a depletion of sulfhydril group content (-SH) and antioxidant enzyme activities as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in testis, epididymis, and sperm. More importantly, ROEO and LSEO treatment significantly protected against oxidative damage of the male reproductive organ systems in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. These findings suggested that ROEO and LSEO exerted a potential protective effect against alloxan-induced reproductive function damage and oxidative stress in male rat. The beneficial effect of ROEO and LSEO might be related, in part, to their antioxidant properties.

        A nonlocal zeroth-order shear deformation theory for nonlinear postbuckling of nanobeams

        In this work, a nonlocal zeroth-order shear deformation theory is developed for the nonlinear postbuckling behavior of nanoscale beams. The beauty of this formulation is that, in addition to including the nonlocal effect according to the nonlocal elasticity theory of Eringen, the shear deformation effect is considered in the axial displacement within the use of shear forces instead of rotational displacement like in existing shear deformation theories. The principle of virtual work together of the nonlocal differential constitutive relations of Eringen, are considered to obtain the equations of equilibrium. Closed-form solutions for the critical buckling load and the amplitude of the static nonlinear response in the postbuckling state for simply supported and clamped clamped nanoscale beams are determined.

      • Influence of porosity on thermal buckling behavior of functionally graded beams

        The interest of this work is the analysis of the effect of porosity on the nonlinear thermal stability response of power law functionally graded beam with various boundary conditions. The modelling was done according to the Euler-Bernoulli beam model where the distribution of material properties is imitated polynomial function. The thermal loads are assumed to be not only uniform but linear as well non-linear and the temperature rises through the thickness direction. The effects of the porosity parameter, slenderness ratio and power law index on the thermal buckling of P-FG beam are discussed.

        Using of Scattering Bond Graph Methodology for a Physical Characteristics Analysis of “D-CRLH’’ Transmission Line

        In this paper, we propose to analyze the physical characteristics of a planar dualcomposite right-left handed transmission line by a common application of Bond Graph approach and Scattering formalism (Methodology S.BG). The technique, we propose consists, on the one hand, of modeling of a dual composite right-left metamaterial transmission line (D-CRLH-TL) by Bond Graph approach, and, it consists of extracting the equivalent circuit of this studied structure. On the other hand, it consists to exploiting the scattering parameters (Scattering matrix) of the DCRLH-TL using the methodology which we previously developed since 2009. Finally, the validation of the proposed and used technique is carried out by comparisons between the simulations results with ADS and Maple (or MatLab).
