<P>Composite solution of sol–gel-derived titania and perfluorosulfonated ionomer (Nafion) was used as a solubilizing agent for multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNT) as well as an encapsulation matrix for alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) for the fabrication of a highly sensitive and stable amperometric ethanol biosensor. ADH was immobilized within a thin film of CNT–titania–Nafion composite film coated on a glassy carbon electrode. Because of the mesoporous nature of the CNT–titania–Nafion composite film, the present biosensor exhibited remarkably fast response time within 2 s. The presence of CNT in the composite film increases not only the sensitivity of the ethanol biosensor but also the long-term stability of the biosensor. The present biosensor responds linearly to ethanol in the wide concentration ranges from 1.0×10−5 M to 3.0×10−3 M with the sensitivity of 51.6 mA M−1cm−2. The present biosensor showed good long-term stability with 75% of its activity retained after 4 weeks of storage in 50 mM phosphate buffer at pH 7.0.</P>

This study demonstrated that cryopreserved semen from dead fish can be used for seedling production. Yellow croakers, Larimichthys polyactis, were killed and stored at temperatures of 20°C or 0°C for 6 hours. At 2 hour intervals, semen from these fish was collected using abdominal pressure and evaluated for spermatozoa motility and semen cryopreservation. Semen collected after 6 hours from dead fish stored at 0°C could be cryopreserved and attained fertilization and hatching rates of 15.0±1.2% and 14.8±1.6%, respectively. This study suggests that germ cells such as the semen of dead fish can be cryopreserved and utilized in the restoration of a species.

A composite film of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/sol-gel-derived zinc oxide(ZnO)/Nafion has been utilized as an efficient immobilization matrix for the construction of a highly sensitive and stable tris(2,2'-bipyridyl) ruthenium(II) (Ru(${bpy)_3}^{2+})$ electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) sensor. The electrochemical and ECL behaviors of Ru(${bpy)_3}^{2+})$ ion-exchanged into the composite film were strongly dependent upon the sol-gel preparation condition, the amount of MWCNT incorporated into the ZnO/Nafion composite film, and the buffer solution pH. The synergistic effect of MWCNTs and ZnO in the composite films increased not only the sensitivity but also the long-term stability of the ECL sensor. The present ECL sensor based on the MWCNT/ZnO/Nafion gave a linear response ($R^2$ = 0.999) for tripropylamine concentration from 500 nM to 1.0 mM with a remarkable detection limit (S/N = 3) of 15 nM. The present ECL sensor showed outstanding long-term stability (94% initial signal retained for 5 weeks). Since the present ECL sensor exhibits large response towards NADH, it could be applied as a transduction platform for the ECL biosensor in which the NADH is produced from the dehydrogenase-based enzymatic reaction in the presence of NA$D^+$ cofactor.

<P>Mesoporous titania-Nafion composite doped with carbon nanotube (CNT) has been used for the immobilization of tris(2,2′-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy)32+) and alcohol dehydrogenase on an electrode surface to yield a highly sensitive and stable electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) ethanol biosensor. The presence of CNT in the composite film increases not only the sensitivity of the ECL biosensor but also the long-term stability of the biosensor. The present biosensor responds linearly to ethanol in the wide concentration ranges from 1.0×10−5 M to 1.0×10−1 M with a detection limit of 5.0×10−6 M (S/N=3). The present ECL ethanol biosensor exhibited higher ECL response compared to that obtained with the ECL biosensor based on the corresponding composite without CNT. The present CNT-based ECL biosensor showed good long-term stability with 75% of its initial activity retained after 2 weeks of storage in 50 mM phosphate buffer at pH 7.0.</P>

<P>We previously developed a novel series of vinyl sulfones as nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) activators with therapeutic potential for Parkinson’s disease (PD). However, the previously developed lead compound (<B>1</B>) exhibited undesirable druglike properties. Here, we optimized vinyl sulfones by introducing nitrogen heterocycles to improve druglike properties. Among the synthesized compounds, <B>17e</B> was the most promising drug candidate with good druglike properties. Compound <B>17e</B> showed superior effects on Nrf2 activation in cell-based assays compared to compound <B>1</B> (<B>17e</B>: half-maximal effective concentration (EC50) = 346 nM; <B>1</B>: EC50 = 530 nM). Compound <B>17e</B> was further confirmed to induce expression of Nrf2-dependent antioxidant enzymes at both mRNA and protein levels. In a 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-induced mouse model of PD, <B>17e</B> significantly attenuated loss of tyrosine hydroxylase-immunopositive dopaminergic neurons, suppressed microglial activation, and alleviated PD-associated motor dysfunction. Thus, <B>17e</B> is a novel Nrf2 activator with excellent druglike properties and represents a potential therapeutic candidate for PD.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

<P>A simple amperometric detection (AD) method based on mesoporous platinum (Pt) electrodes has been developed for the determination of sugars (glucose, fructose, and sucrose) with high-performance anion-exchange chromatography (HPAEC). The amperometric detection is based on the direct oxidation of sugars on mesoporous Pt films formed on a gold electrode. The mesoporous Pt electrode (roughness factor of 243) sensitively responded to glucose, fructose, and sucrose in 80 mM sodium hydroxide solution as an alkaline mobile-phase for HPAEC. Under the optimum conditions, the limits of detection (<I>S/N</I> = 3) in these sugars were 0.24, 0.29, and 1.8 mM, for glucose, fructose, and sucrose, respectively. The reproducibility (relative standard deviation) of the measurements was less than 3.5%. The present method was applied to the determination of sugars in apple juice. The recoveries for all sugars ranged from 97 to 99%.</P>

This paper proposes a control strategy of Battery Energy Storage System(BESS) for increasing the hosting capacity of the Variable Energy Resources (VER) in the distribution system by resolving any violation in bus voltages and line loading caused by the connection of VER. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm was verified by study cases employing the real distribution system based test system in terms not only of the long term time-series simulation but also of the real-time simulation.
