Atractylodes japonica is a perennial plant belonging to the Compositae family, distributing in the alpine region of central and northern of Korea. It has been reported that A. japonica has immune enhancement, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and diuretic effects. In this investigation, we evaluated the growth of probiotic strains including Lactobacillus plantarum, Streptococcus thermophilus, and Lactobacillus helveticus under fermentation conditions using 30% fermented ethanol extract of A. japonica (AJE), and based on this, the anti-inflammatory effects of AJE and its fermented products which are fermented with Lactobacillus plantarum (AJE-LPF) and Streptococcus thermophilus (AJE-STF) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 and BV2 cells. The three probiotic strains grew significantly with fermentation time, and in particular, the growth of them increased markedly under high concentration conditions compared to low concentration conditions. In addition, the fermented products under high concentration condition with AJE-STF markedly decreased the LPS-induced production of nitric oxide (NO) compared to those effect of other products in both RAW264.7 and BV2 cells.

Improving rice high-quality potential is to suffice the food demand of the rapid decreasing consumption, and is a major breeding target recently. We calculated the alkali digestion value (ADV), used to indirectly measure gelatinization temperature, to evaluate the quality of cooked rice in 2013 and 2014. The ADV score of frequency distribution was higher milled rice than brown rice. In total, nine different quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were found on chromosomes1, 3, 5, 6 and 8 in 2013 and 2014. Also, chromosome 5, 8 were detected over two years. The polymorphism using RM223, RM3530, and RM18130 markers can be used to select lines that have a good trait for breeding of high-quality rice. We conclude that selected molecular markers from this QTL analysis could be exploited in future rice quality.
Optimal Reserve Allocation to Maximize Kinetic Energy in a Wind Power Plant
Gihwan Yoon,Hyewon Lee,Jinsik Lee,Gi-Gab Yoon,Jong Keun Park,Yong Cheol Kang 대한전기학회 2015 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.10 No.5
Modern wind generators (WGs) are forced or encouraged to participate in frequency control in the form of inertial and/or primary control to improve the frequency stability of power systems. To participate in primary control, WGs should perform deloaded operation that maintains reserve power using speed and/or pitch-angle control. This paper proposes an optimization formulation that allocates the required reserve to WGs to maximize the kinetic energy (KE) stored in a wind power plant (WPP). The proposed optimization formulation considers the rotor speed margin of each WG to the maximum speed limit, which is different from each other because of the wake effects in a WPP. As a result, the proposed formulation allows a WG with a lower rotor speed to retain more KE in the WPP. The performance of the proposed formulation was investigated in a 100-MW WPP consisting of 20 units of 5-MW permanent magnet synchronous generators using an EMTP-RV simulator. The results show that the proposed formulation retains the maximum amount of KE with the same reserve and successfully increases the frequency nadir in a power system by releasing the stored KE in a WPP in the case of a disturbance.
Power Curve of a Wind Generator Suitable for a Low Wind Speed Site to Achieve a High Capacity Factor
Gihwan Yoon,Hyewon Lee,Sang Ho Lee,Don Hur,Yong Cheol Kang 대한전기학회 2014 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.9 No.3
It is well known that energy generated by a wind generator (WG) depends on the wind resources at the installation site. In other words, a WG installed in a high wind speed area can produce more energy than that in a low wind speed area. However, a WG installed at a low wind site can produce a similar amount of energy to that produced by a WG installed at a high wind site if the WG is designed with a rated wind speed corresponding to the mean wind speed of the site. In this paper, we investigated the power curve of a WG suitable for Korea’s southwestern coast with a low mean wind speed to achieve a high capacity factor (CF). We collected the power curves of the 11 WGs of the 6 WG manufacturers. The probability density function of the wind speed on Korea’s southwestern coast was modeled using the Weibull distribution. The annual energy production by the WG was calculated and then the CFs of all of the WGs were estimated and compared. The results indicated that the WG installed on the Korea’s southwestern coast could obtain a CF higher than 40 % if it was designed with the lower rated speed corresponding to the mean wind speed at the installation site.

Rice blast, caused by the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, is one of the most devastating diseases of rice. To understand the molecular basis of Pi5-mediated resistance to M. oryzae, we cloned the resistance (R) gene at this locus using a map-based cloning strategy. Genetic and phenotypic analyses of 2014 F2 progeny from a mapping population derived from a cross between IR50, a susceptible rice cultivar, and the RIL260 line carrying Pi5 enabled us to narrow down the Pi5 locus to a 130-kb interval. Sequence analysis of this genomic region identified two candidate genes, Pi5-1 and Pi5-2, which encode proteins carrying three motifs characteristic of R genes: an N-terminal coiled-coil (CC) motif, a nucleotide-binding (NB) domain, and a leucine-rich repeat (LRR) motif. In genetic transformation experiments of a susceptible rice cultivar, neither the Pi5-1 nor the Pi5-2 gene was found to confer resistance to M. oryzae. In contrast, transgenic rice plants expressing both of these genes, generated by crossing transgenic lines carrying each gene individually, conferred Pi5-mediated resistance to M. oryzae. Gene expression analysis revealed that Pi5-1 transcripts accumulate after pathogen challenge, whereas the Pi5-2 gene is constitutively expressed. These results indicate that the presence of these two genes is required for rice Pi5-mediated resistance to M. oryzae.

The deposition of beta-amyloid (Aβ) in the brain precedes the onset of symptoms such as cognitive impairment in Alzheimer’s disease (AD); therefore, the early detection of Aβ accumulation is crucial. We previously reported the applicability of the QPLEXTM Alz plus assay kit for the prescreening of Aβ accumulation. Here, we tested the specific application of the kit in a large cohort of cognitively normal (CN) individuals of varying ages for the early detection of Aβ accumulation. We included a total of 221 CN participants with or without brain Aβ. The QPLEXTM biomarkers were characterized based on age groups (1st–3rd tertile) and across various brain regions with cerebral amyloid deposition. The 3rd tertile group (>65 years) was found to be the most suitable age group for the application of our assay kit. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the area under the curve (AUC, discrimination power) was 0.878 with 69.7% sensitivity and 98.4% specificity in the 3rd tertile group. Additionally, specific correlations between biomarkers and cerebral amyloid deposition in four different brain regions revealed an overall correlation with general amyloid deposition, consistent with previous findings. Furthermore, the combinational panel with plasma Aβ1–42 levels maximized the discrimination efficiency and achieved an AUC of 0.921 with 95.7% sensitivity and 67.3% specificity. Thus, we suggest that the QPLEXTM Alz plus assay is useful for prescreening brain Aβ levels in CN individuals, especially those aged >65 years, to prevent disease progression via the early detection of disease initiation.
Work Environment and Workers’ Smoking: The Impact of Affect and Social Support Among Korean Workers
Gihwan Gu,Jaein Lee,Myoungj in Lee 서울대학교 사회발전연구소 2021 Journal of Asian Sociology Vol.50 No.2
The main goal of this study is to investigate the causal pathways of work environment and smoking habits. We also tested whether socio-psychic variables influence this pathway. By bridging the affective events theory framework, we compose two categories of work environment according to the affective events theory model: work features and emotional labor. Using the Korean Working Conditions Survey (N = 50,032), we analyzed the mediating effects after inputting negative affect, the interaction effects of social support, to predict smoking behaviors. The results reveal a direct relationship between lower job autonomy and smoking due to negative sentiments and the infringement of working-time flexibility. Lower levels of social support also impacted smoking in interactions with low-job autonomy. Therefore, we suggest that work environment, and primarily work features, induces stress-related adverse affects and promotes smoking, while an environment of social support can reduce smoking.
