Should Adjuvant Radiotherapy Be Recommended for Pediatric Craniopharyngiomas?

Intracranial tumors secondary to radiotherapy are rare. In this group gliomas are the rarest. Only 6 cases of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) have been reported in patients undergoing radiotherapy (RT) for craniopharyngiomas of which only 4 have been in children less than 18 years of age. In recent years RT has become a mainstay of adjuvant therapy for recurrent or partially excised craniopharyngiomas. We report a child of 12 years who had previously undergone RT for a suprasellar craniopharyngioma and presented 10 years later with a GBM. This is the 5th pediatric case in literature demonstrating a GBM after RT for a craniopharyngioma. The implications of subjecting the pediatric population to RT for a benign lesion versus the outcome of gross total removal and management of RT induced tumors is discussed and the need to avail of safer alternatives such as stereotactic radiosurgery is stressed.

The present paper deals with the problem of nonselective harvesting in a partly infected prey and predator system in which both the susceptible prey and the predator follow the law of logistic growth and some preys avoid predation by hiding. The dynamical behaviour of the system has been studied in both the local and global sense. The optimal policy of exploitation has been derived by using Pontraygin's maximal principle. Numerical analysis and computer simulation of the results have been performed to investigate the golbal properties of the system.

In this study, we have collected and screened a total of 268 stool samples from diarrheal patients admitted to an Infectious disease hospital in Kolkata for the presence of Cryptosporidium spp. The initial diagnosis was carried out by microscopy followed by genus specific polymerase chain reaction assays based on 70 kDa heat shock proteins (HSP70). DNA sequencing of the amplified locus has been employed for determination of genetic diversity of the local isolates. Out of 268 collected samples, 12 (4.48%) were positive for Cryptosporidium spp. Sequences analysis of 70 kDa heat shock proteins locus in 12 Cryptosporidium local isolates revealed that 2.24% and 1.86% of samples were showing 99% to 100% identity with C. parvum and C. hominis. Along with the other 2 major species one recently described globally dis-tributed pathogenic species Cryptosporidium viatorum has been identified. The HSP70 locus sequence of the isolate showed 100% similarity with a previously described isolate of C. viatorum (Accession No. JX978274.1, JX978273.1, and JN846706.1) present in GenBank.

The widespread production and use of pesticides have severely impacted the pristine quality of waterresources. Present conventional techniques are incapable of removing such endocrine disruptingchemicals due to their recalcitrant nature. The use of functional material, namely hybrids of titanium,zinc, tungsten, iron, carbon, and polymers exhibits tremendous significance as the advanced treatmentalternatives. The efficient applications of these materials are mainly attributed to their multidimensionalproperties, like the surface functionalization, visible light sensitivity, and reduced electron–holerecombination, etc. The treatment of this priority pollutant by the functional material and the relatedissues of concerns has been critically emphasized.

Background: Vitamin B12 deficiency has been associated with peripheral neuropathy, loss of sensation in the peripheral nerves, and weakness in the lower extremities. Methylcobalamin is the most effective analogue of vitamin B12 used to treat or prevent the complications associated with vitamin B12 deficiency. The current study aimed to compare the serum cobalamin levels after administration of two different regimes of methylcobalamin in peripheral neuropathy patients. Methods: The present study was a prospective, randomized, comparative study. The study consisted of two parallel groups, group A (methylcobalamin 500 μg injection intramuscularly three times a week) and group B (methylcobalamin 1500 μg injection intramuscularly once a week). A control group of healthy volunteers was also included. Results: A total of 24 patients (12 in each group) were included in the study. Five healthy volunteers were also included as a control in each group. At the end of treatment, serum cobalamin levels were significantly (P = 0.028) higher in group A (1892.08 ± 234.50) as compared with group B (1438.5 ± 460.32). The serum cobalamin levels in Group A healthy volunteers were also two times higher than that of group B (P = 0.056). Both the LANSS scale and DN4 questionnaire reported similar results at end of treatment. Conclusions: The 500 μg methylcobalamin thrice weekly regime is more effective in increasing the serum cobalamin levels as compared to the 1500 μg methylcobalamin once weekly regime. Dissociative Experience in Unipolar and Bipolar Depression: Exploring the Great Divide

Objective: Unipolar and bipolar depression (UD and BD) differ strikingly in respect to neurobiology, course and management, but their apparent clinical similarity often leads to misdiagnosis resulting in chronicity of course and treatment failure. In this study we have tried to assess whether UD and BD can be differentiated on the basis of their dissociative symptoms. Methods: Thrty-six UD patients and 35 BD patients in active episodes, without any psychiatric comorbidity were selected from outpatient department and compared for depressive and dissociative symptoms using Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and Dissociative Experience Scale-II (DES-II). Results: We found that thought the two groups didn’t differ in terms of the socio-demographic or clinical variables, BD group had significantly higher dissociative experience (U=343, p=0.001) than UD and the difference remained significant even after adjusting for the confounding factors. Conclusion: Our study shows that dissociative symptoms are significantly more prevalent in the depressive episodes of bipolar affective disorder as compared to the UD and can be an important tool in differentiating between the two disorders with very similar clinical profile. The difference can be measured using a simple self-report questionnaire like DES-II.

Senna (Cassia angustifolia) is widely used in Indian folk medicine for the prevention of various disorders. Herein, we have demonstrated that water extracted arabinogalactan protein (AGP) rich fraction possesses strong antioxidative activity. The AGP rich fraction was analyzed using chemical, chromatographic, and spectroscopic methods. Effect of water extracted polymers on bovine serum albumin spectrum was determined using excitation wavelength of 282 nm. The antioxidant capacity of this fraction was studied by ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and DPPH radical assays. This polymeric fraction,≥88% of which gets precipitated with Yariv reagent,consisted mainly of (1→5)-/(1→3,5)-linked α-arabinosyl,(1→3)-/(1→3,6)-linked-galactosyl residues and terminal arabinofuranosyl residues. Its in vitro antioxidant capacity is comparable to that of standard antioxidants. Fluorescence quenching studies furnishes evidence for the interaction of the arabinogalactan protein with bovine serum albumin.
